This Ain't Your Daddy's Marvel

Today begins a new era in Marvel Comics. A renumbering and relaunching of some of Marvel's greatest titles starts right here and NOW! The biggest relaunches start in a few months with titles like FF (a substitute team), Fantastic Four, Iron Man, the flagship title Uncanny Avengers, All-New X-Men, Deadpool, X-Men Legacy (starring Xavier's son, Legion) and Indestructible Hulk. Yeah, this is happening...

Are they by any chance calling this The Newer 52? Or are they making it plain they haven’t at all been looking at the success of DC’s zero issues and are definitely not trying to ride that wave in any way, shape or form?
And what the hell is going on with some of the costumes in that picture. Iron Man’s armour doesn’t look right with the black and the red shiny bits, but that’s excusable compared to who ever it is in the red at the front. I can’t decide if it’s a really rubbish redesign of Daredevil or an even more confusing redesign of Cyclops with a stupid mask. When has Cyclops ever worn red? And the less said about the Raccoon the better.

^ WB employee? I’ve always been a Marvel-ite. Some of this looks cool some not so… i agree with the terrible Iron Man color scheme. But at least its not some half-ass reboot (continuity is revamped for everything EXCEPT Batman and Green Lantern?) that they are ALREADY ret-conning (Teen Titans). I’ll give it a shot.

Pretty much echoing Barbario’s sentiments, some of it looks cool, some of it not so much.

Seeing Cyclops in the promo gives me some hope. Grant Morrison and Joss Whedon had these amazing runs that built Scott up into a complex and awesome character, the guy you want to root for because he’s not Captain America but still tries his best to save the day, and with AvsX and all the fall-out they’ve just been pissing on all that character development.

No I’m not a WB employee. I actually have always preferred Marvel to DC, which is why I’m so confused by the reboot. It was fine as it was.

So is this a reboot in the Mainline universe, or the Ultimate universe? (There is still an ultimate universe, right?) I guess I haven’t been keeping up as well as I thought 🙂

  6. DiCicatriz says:

This really isn’t a reboot at all, more of a re-branding or a make-over. As far as I know the continuity remains intact, but there are just going to be widespread aesthetic changes to most of Marvel’s characters as well as new titles, new teams, all sorts of NEW NEW NEW things going on. Marvel just wants to be all in your face about it in hopes that you’ll give them your money 😀

The folks I know in the industry are keeping tight-lipped about it, but I have a strong feeling Scotty’s probably gonna be a villain. The Iron Man armor isn’t nearly as bad as the one in IM3 that we’ve seen. Then there’s Cable’s new design from Cable and X-Force (http://media.comicvine.com/uploads/0/40/2591747-cableandxforce_01_cover.jpeg). Also, Spider-Man’s red and black look and whatever the hell Hulk is wearing in this image. Never said it’d be good.

Uuuuugh…. my Cyclops is the new Magneto fears have come true. Why does Marvel have to retcon all of their characters into asshats just for the sake of a lame storyline? “Hey, Joss Whedon just spent two years making Cyclops relevant again, let’s have him be the leader of mutantdom… oh wait nvm he’s a bad guy because its convenient and it’s not like ANYBODY ELSE has ever done something bad while possessed by a cosmic entity and then been embraced by the superhero community again. *ahem* Scarlet Witch *ahem*”

I’m interested in seeing how Forge isn’t dead seeing as S.W.O.R.D hit him with a planet vaporizing laser. Like… right in the face.

That X-Force title looks interesting though, at least Colossus has an outlet for his Juggernaut rage. Cable’s redesign is admittedly a little ridiculous, but he DID just regrow that arm (I seem to recall a promo image of him with a much less muscular new flesh and blood arm in a sling, but alas I can’t find it) and I imagine much of his fighting style revolves around using his old mech-arm as a shield or for super-strength feats and such, so he’d probably want to armor up until he can get used to having a completely biological body again.

Don’t most of us do that anyway?

I really hope that the arm we see in the promo image for Cable and X-Force isn’t gonna be the standard. We need the old arm. One that actually looks like flesh and blood once it goes into a sleeve.

  12. DiCicatriz says:

Cable’s new arm IS flesh and blood. Hope harnessed the Phoenix Force during the X:Sanction mini leading up AvsX, and cured him completely of the techno-organic virus, even regrowing him a flesh and blood arm in place of his old metal arm. He’s been in a coma since then. You can kiiiinda see his two fleshy arms here: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/108.jpg

The new Michael Bay’s Transformers arm looks like something he’s wearing over it, like an exoskeleton… but just the arm. You can even see his actual hand peeking out just under the mech-hand in the cover you posted.

I kinda see it, but that doesn’t explain the Nick Fury eye patch.

Who is the Raccoon with a gatling gun? That guy is my new hero.

Rocket Raccoon is a very and I mean very obscure character in the Marvel U. He’s currently part of the cast of the new movie coming out in the next few years, Guardians of the Galaxy. Not even remotely kidding. I really wish I was.
