Happy New Year's Eve!

Consider this an open thread, to discuss anything you like -- memories of 2011, hopes for 2012, which upcoming super-hero related movie has you most excited, requests for the blog, etc. Whatever you like!

As for me, I just want to express once again my sincere gratitude for your ongoing participation in the HeroMachine project, and my intense appreciation for your humor, talent, creativity, and imagination. I am awed by how gracious so many of you are to your fellow creators, how generous with your time, and how willing you are to give your feedback. It humbles me, and I thank you for it, one and all.

And, of course, Happy New Year!

i made a new pose! my challenge (of sorts) is for any and all users to use this pose in the most creative way you can think of! this is more of an OCD type thing than a contest. the text is in a Word document on my wiki.

I have a challenge. Create an image in Hero Machine using ONLY TEN items total to convey an emotion. Any emotion at all but here’s a list for starters:
    Happiness
    Sadness
    Anger
    Jealousy
    Love
    Hate
    Pride

And when I say ten items, I mean ten period. You cannot simply multiply the same item numerous times to get around the system.

  6. Debochira says:

Adding onto the rule, you have to use EXACTLY ten items. No slapping on a heart and saying “Voila!”

  7. Frankie says:

Hi Jeff. I have a blog request. Just by coincidence, I came up with this idea last night. I know we have different kinds of art contests, but what about a contest similar to the Caption Contest?

A funniest comment contest. The funniest commenters would be the nominees. And the catagories would be Caption Contest, Random Panel, Bad Costume, OnomontoPOWia and (I think), I Hate Rob Liefeld. Plus two additional catagories: Funniest Comment Overall and Funniest Commenter of All Time. And we should have voting polls for each catagory.

I guess this contest would include comments from the beginning of the HM blog to now, and if we do it again this time next year, the comments would be from 2012.

I’ll leave it up to you, Jeff for the prizes. However, I’d like to suggest that the final two catagories’ prizes be different than the rest. i.e. additions to HM3 as main prizes, and black & white illustrations or colored as final catagory prizes.

Oh, and a special catagory for bloggers who are not currently posting, but have made many of us laugh when there were posting comments.

It’s a lot of work for a contest, but I’m not giving you an order, just a suggestion.

And finally, Happy Twilight Zone Marathon everyone.

  8. FRM says:

Debochira–here’s expectation and joy of a long-awaited return. 10 items: ship, ship’s reflection, sky, sea, yellow gradient(sun), another yellow gradient(sun’s reflection), 2 white gradients on the sails, and 2 people(companions) on the bow of the ship.

  9. FRM says:

now you respond to my challenge!

  10. FRM says:

    i like Frankie’s idea.

  11. Jeff Hebert says:

Frankie, that’s a wonderful idea, but honestly it would be way too much work for me to attempt. I’m moving to a new WordPress template some time in the very near future, which would allow me to do some Digg-style “vote up/down” kinds of things for comments, so we could base it on that. But as-is, there’s just no way I could keep up with all that.

  12. Aaron says:

since this is an open thread may i ask u a question Jeff?
how did you come about making Heromachine?
    What was your reasoning?

  13. Jeff Hebert says:

Aaron, mostly I wanted to learn how to program in Flash. I do better when I have a specific project in mind, so I started looking around for something suitable.

Two different things happened that made me think of HeroMachine. First, I saw my two nephews fill notebook after notebook with fantasy sports uniform designs, and thought how nice it would be if they had something that would let them turn their imaginations into drawings beyond what they had the skill to do themselves.

And second, I was in an active Champions RPG game at the time, but since my buddy John and I were the only ones who could draw, the other guys would come to us to do Full Color Visuals of their villains. Which of course ruined the surprise for me as a player. I thought it would be cool if GMs had a tool where they could make character portraits without having to know how to draw.

I remembered the “Mighty Men and Monster Maker” set I had as a kid, and used that as the model for what I wanted to do to learn how to program in Flash, and the rest just sort of happened. And I’m grateful it did!

  14. Gene says:

Happy New Year everyone! Be Safe tonight πŸ™‚

  15. FRM says:

since people are on the blog, why dont they RESPOND TO MY CHALLENGE!

  16. Debochira says:

FRM, I love your image. Definitely what I was hoping for. I’m working on your challenge as I type this but I don’t think it will be as phenomenal as your image.

  17. Debochira says:

Jeff, I also have a question for you.
What was the very first item you drew for Hero Machine?

  18. TOOL says:

I heard something about a Deadpool movie in the making, any thoughts or comments? I think all the “Super Hero” movies are cool as movies in themself but they really messed up on some crutial plot and story points. I am a stickler like that, especially when they make mistakes on some of my favorite characters.

  19. Myro says:

Just like to say, thank you Jeff for the use of your fine program and I wish a happy and safe new year to everyone in the community.

  20. Whit says:

    Happy New Year!

  21. Trekkie says:

It’s been a great year, and I’m glad that I joined this community this year. I wish you all a great 2012!

  22. Jeff Hebert says:

One of the very first things I drew for HM was a hawk-helmet/chestpiece/leggings set, I believe.

  23. Gero says:

Happy New Year, HM’ers! See you in 2012!!!

  24. Aaron says:

i like Kyles suggestions so but i would like to suggest somethin of my own…
in the comin year if possible is it likely we will see a feature that lets us rotate our character so we can see the back of the character?

  25. FRM says:

Debochira–i’m pleased you liked it and i’m sure yours will be great, too!

  26. FRM says:

kyle– i especially like the first one, that wicked sword!

jeff–i would like to suggest hair that works with the profile head, as well as stringless bows, bent bows, and bowstrings separately.

  27. FRM says:

jeff- i just used the new mech boots on a dude, who, now that i’m finished, looks like the guy from Glassworks, an arcade game at Nitrome.com.

  28. Impromptu contests!

Starting with Debochira’s Emotion: Optimistic for the New Year.

    http://forums.ugo.com/picture.php?albumid=251&pictureid=2223

  29. Aaron says:

@FRM i like the guy but i feel the boots should have a pants item to match with them because to be completely honest i dont think that they go good with any outfit they just seem a little weird to me

  30. Kaldath says:

Happy New Years From New Jersey!

  31. kyle says:

i like Aaron ideas where i can rotate my character around so i can make them looking like their ready for a showdown!
    FRM-me too
    just a few more ideas:
