Although she has yet to win a contest outright, she has made it as a Finalist several times and is always a fun, interesting, and motivated participant in our discussions. Thus it gives me great happiness to present to you the Power User Profile of Jessica! Has anyone noticed how many different countries HM folks are from? I think that's one of my favorite things about our community, you really get a sense for how comics (and art!) can bring people from very different backgrounds together.
Anyway, heeeeeeeeere's Jessica!
- Online name used in HeroMachine environs: Jessica
- A photo (or drawing) of you in "real life":
- Real name: Jessica Armstrong
- Real city/state/country: Cambridge/Ontario/Canada
- Real job: Student (Geomatics Honours)
- Real age: 30
- Gender: Female
- Relationship status (married, single, in a long-term relationship, dating someone, "it's complicated", etc): Dating steadily.
- Online archive of your creations: There are two: http://s248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/tvjess8107/ and https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150118232129580.286896.546339579
- The best piece of HeroMachine art you've created: "Vesta" (love the way her hair looks like gold on fire!)
- Favorite all-time geeky movie if any:Star Wars (grew up on that stuff)
- Favorite all-time geeky book if any: Anything Kelley Armstrong (woman is a genius). And no I can't just pick one!
- Favorite all-time geeky TV show if any: SUPERNATURAL (I am so hooked!)
- Favorite all-time comic book character if any: Marvel Girl/Jean Grey/Phoenix (she was very girl-power)
- If you could have one super-heroic power in real life, you'd choose: God, I have to choose?! Well, if I had to choose, it would have to be telekinesis. It is just too cool being able to throw things with your mind.
- In your leisure time you like to: Read, play on computers, walk, chill with my honey Tony...
- Character design turn-ons (things you love to see that make for a good design): Anything female! It's a pain in the butt trying to get everything right when it's made for a man! Girls just have too many curves that men don't...
- Character design turn-offs (things you hate to see that make for a bad design): Unmatched body parts (with other parts as well as clothes). Makes it hard to fit anything together fluidly.
- Best tip for a HeroMachine newbie: Don't be afraid to try new things! Think outside the box and you will eventually get it right. Most of all, have fun with it! I still laugh my head off every time I see a parody in the contests!
- Any personal message you'd like to share with the HeroMachine community about Geek Life: I am the oddest combination of Geek that you will ever find! I come from a family full of roughnecks (not exactly sharpest tools in the shed!) and I am the only one who has any higher education! Everybody in my family calls me "the Smart One" or "the Geek". Oddly enough it has made me a weird blend of sarcastically funny mixed with odd facts that no one ever thinks about! I refer to myself as "The Big Dictionary of Useless Facts". I'm also a feminist (if you haven't caught onto that yet) and believe that anything a man can do, a woman can do too. I'm damn proud to be a Geek and am of the opinion that those who make fun of Geeks are either sheep (baaa!) or just jealous.
Yeah, telekinesis would be cool…
Love Vesta, she really looks like she’s on fire. Also, I totally know what you mean about the body parts. So annoying huh?
I don’t know many useless facts, but my sister knows loads and I think it’s pretty cool π
Actually, that would be a pretty good superpower – the ability to remember everything you read or hear, no matter how trivial or useless… π
Yes the body parts are annoying! So difficult to do female characters because of it. Oh well, Jeff is getting better at it. More and more female parts come all the time.
lol I don’t know about super, Kaylin, but remembering everything does come in handy. And it’s funny watching people when they get that look on their face like “huh?” Kinda makes me feel special…
βThe Big Dictionary of Useless Factsβ π
Do I know that feeling. Always enjoy the female perspective on geekdom.
I have found the closest thing to telekinesis in the real world. If you want to throw things around with your mind, get a cat. Whatever you are looking at, they will knock over.
@The Atomic Punk (3): Lol.
@The Atomic Punk (3): ROFLMFAO!!! That is so true! I know because I have a cat! She always knocks over anything I tell her to stay away from!
Congrats Jessica. I can relate to being “The Big Dictionary of Useless Facts.” Some people hate to play trivia games against me because of it.
Also, strangely, you look like my ex. That really doesn’t have anything to do with anything, but it’s something that I noticed and felt compelled to say.
Vesta is rad. I get a very Phoenix feel from her – never would have guessed your a Jean Grey fan what with the obvious influence and want for telekinesis π
Kudos for being an (over)educated geek chica…a geeka if you will. I too am an honours student in a family of blue collars. My sister has a PhD and is the one that got me into fantasy to begin with. I think we geeks should band together to develop our own “collar”….perhaps a medieval gorget.
Welcome to the Power User Club Jessica!
@Myro: thanks. It’s okay about the ex thing. I get told all the time that I look like someone else. I think I have one of those generic faces that just reminds everyone of someone they know. And my entire family hates playing trivia with me too!
@ZombieGunslinger: yeah, Jean Grey is kinda like my all-time favourite character. And I’m glad you like Vesta. I worked hard on her. I actually just thought of the golden-fiery hair at the last minute. We should definitely have our own “collar” — my family tells me all the time that I am a different breed. lol
@Kaldath: thanks! Never thought it would happen since I never win the contests. I was shocked.
Yeah, these aren’t meant to be just “Here’s more about contest winners”, it’s supposed to be about getting to know people better who contribute meaningfully to the community. Mostly that’s been through winning contests or being a great creator, but helping with comments and being an active participant is also big.
congratulations Jessica (my last name is Armstrong too).
@Jeff, well I always hope that I am contributing as a member. I like doing this kind of stuff and it tickles me pink that people actually like what I come up with.
@emporor jack, rite on! So many of us out there!
Love your stuff Jessica! Nice to meet you!
@PapaKrok: thanks! I try hard… Nice to meet you too!
Kudos, Jessica! What’s the most trivial thing you know?
@spidercow2010: thanks! And I don’t know about the most trivial but I got a lotta blank looks when I told my group at school that the reason a flame-powered generator wouldn’t work on the moon was because the moon has little to no atmosphere and therefore has little to no oxygen and since fire has to eat oxygen to survive then the generator wouldn’t work.
Sorry i don’t near in computer in the last two day. I really congratulate for the Power User status.
Congrats you! * switch Woman power on
Alright! Now we have enough power users to extinguish the sun! The master plan has finally come to fruition! BWAH HA! BWAH HA HA! BWAH HA HA HA!
Oh wait. I think I’m on the wrong blog. Awkward.
While I’m here…
Congratulations, Jessica. Your presence on the boards is really appreciated. Keep up the good vibrations!
@Tarkabarka, thanks! I try hard…
@Kytana, Go Woman Power!! Woo-hoo!
@dblade, Thanks for the congrats! However, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you were a megalomaniac who wants to extinguish the sun! lol
Congrats Jessica! Always nice to see another canuck in the fold. Cheers! (with timmie’s coffee)
@ams: TIMMIES?!!! Where? WHERE?!
Hey Jeff, it hasn’t been letting me comment lately.
Is it me or is the website been messing up these laste few months?
Oh and congrates Jessica!
@gtamythmaster43: thanks!
