HM3: Export options

I'm currently working on adding options for how you want to export your character image, and this is the dialog box I have so far:

How do those sizes grab you? The 200x300 size I figure will mostly be used for portrait views, so you can have a handy image for using as a forum avatar, for instance. Should I have something similar intended for widescreen use? What size would that be?

Note that I am not 100% sure I can actually do all of this, especially exporting as portrait and widescreen, but I figure it's better to start out aiming for the stars.

This looks like it will be awesome if you can get it done. Any chance that you can also make sure that “saving as” will not cut off the bottom of one’s design? 98% of the time this doesn’t matter, but every once in a while, I put some things near the bottom of my picture, only to find it gets cut off, which necessitates going into screen capture mode instead.

Thanks for the tip Myro, I’ll look into that.

This will be a big help for me personally! I love the whole thing!

    Yay!

  5. Haxxx says:

It looks grate. I would be happy with just “Character”,”Widescreen”, and “Headshot” without the sizes. But ya. pleas make it happen.

  6. Kaldath says:

Should view a few wibesites that offer computer wall paper to check the the size they typically offer and use those sizes for the wide screen view.

I like the higher res idea. I use HM to do desktop designs, and the pixelation has always bothered me.

  8. Tim says:

This would be a great addition! Although I’m accustomed to the whole “Print screen” technique, I probably wouldn’t have to anymore if this works.

  9. Scorpidius says:

Jeff this is great stuff!! If you can get this to work, it is legendary status for you sir!!

Love the choices, and the high res image sizes will be fab!

Really looking forward to seeing this.

@Jeff: One question: How would this widescreen selection work? Say I selected 2000×3000 would that be Height (H) x Width (W)?

Also, loving the last two size options, but you might want to add a few background-sized options, say 1600×1200 (4:3 aspect ratio) and 1920×1080 (16:9)

  11. Jeff Hebert says:

No clue, Worf, I haven’t thought that far ahead.

This is all a bit harder than I thought. I have spent the majority of the day just getting all the basics working in terms of making the menu show up, making the radio buttons change, etc.

Now all that works but getting the actual scaling and sizing correct is proving to be quite vexing.

  12. Worf says:

@Jeff: Ah, gotcha. I thought I’d throw my thoughts out there as you were “aiming for the stars”. Wish I knew about flash so I could help out…

  13. Reid says:

Love the option of choosing from a variety of resolution choices, but could we add 1920 x 1200 for widescreen.

Thanks keep up the great work !!!

Looks great to me. I like the size options.

  15. metalhead666 says:

not to mix new updates with old updates but did you ever decide to work on making a size generator such as “dwarf” “giant” and such?

  16. kyle says:

all we need now is a menu bar in the wide screen and head-shot mode

This looks great, I love it! πŸ™‚

BTW, thank you very much for Hero Machine and everything you’re doing with it. Having such an awesome tool at my disposal, freely to top it, has changed my life πŸ™‚

I love these ideas. Today I’m still using screenshots and the zoom-function of my browser (plus full-screen-option) to get higher resolution-pics, but that ist often bad (the full-screen-button is next to the windows-update-button, so you can guess what’s often happening).

    I had problems. An example:

    Where it to adjust?

  20. Nick Hentschel says:

For me, the “Big 3” options are fine: regular, widescreen headshot. As it stands the “Export” functions only save in regular mode, forcing me to muck about with the Grab utility on my Mac. It works, but this would help a lot.

  21. Jeff Hebert says:

Rozenstal, you lost me — was there a bug with that character?

  22. Rozenstal says:

Jeff, It is too much empty seat sideways from a figure.
For those figures which I will connect in a collage, it even is good, but in general – it will be inconvenient to cut off edges.

  23. Krimzon says:

There seems to be a big glitch now. Whenever I load a character (love the big character select menu now instead of the scroll one), and I go to, say, male tops, it reverts back to the original character I save dit as if I made any changes.

I was making this clown character and I went to change his tie so I loaded Neckwear, and I changed it. Then I went to hands and the tie switched back to his original and deleted the new tie.

  24. Krimzon says:

And it’s loading all the wrong things. I tried to load backplane and it loaded blade weapons. Wtf?

  25. DogRedScottie says:

SUGGESTION: Zoom feature (plus/minus magnify glass) so you can pick the area for the final snapshot.

  26. CPrime says:

    Brilliant idea!

  27. CKnap says:

I love all the new add ons Jeff but i was attempting to save a character onto a flash drive and i realized u changed to size it saves as, I know if you complete this export character feature it’ll fix that but I was hoping the older size was going to be added on or if you cant create this youd change it back

  28. violodion says:

    Super size me!

Big one (2000 x 3000) ought be good for group arrangements. That is, build an oversized arrangement and reduce to fit. Should transparency on the PNG stick, even better.

Imagine such group shots could use another β€œshot” of just a fancy background arrangement to tie the collage or montage together.

More options are better. HM3 does much of the work, but can easily see people dropping things into a paint program β€œto move to the next level”.

Not concerned about file size, such can be tweaked later, and with USB drives/Dropbox/etc, cannot imagine too many are.

Any increase in options is great, I just hope that the printing function is unchanged. I normally print to a pdf so the vector information is maintained, allowing me to output whatever resolution I desire.
