Character Design Contest ♯135- Modern Gods

So guys, this week I want you to do a modern take on a God from some form of Mythology. This can take the form of doing a superhero version a-la Marvel's Thor or doing an everyday version, I don't much mind which. If you can think of some other way of modernising mythological deities then I'll be interested to see it, so don't go asking "is this ok". Just go with it. Most of you can tell ancient from modern right?

Of course there are some stipulations. 1. No Greek/ Roman Gods. They are obvious, cliche and I plan to do a contest on them at some point in the near future. 2. No Gods from any current major world religions. We don't want to offend anyone do we, even if offence isn't intended.

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

No Greek or Roman? This will be fun.

  2. hawk007 says:

Okay, quick question. When you say modern, does that mean only modern, or modern forward? Like, futuristic? I know you didn’t want these questions. I just want to be clear.

I think what he means is a “modern take” in general as in how would that specific deity look if we were to worship him/her today. In other words, anything but the classic display but still recognizable enough to see it’s that specific god(ess).

  4. JR19759 says:

    @Hawk007- Only modern

  9. JR19759 says:

Outcast- Welp, someone obviously didn’t read the rules properly. Forgive me if I’m wrong but isn’t Rama a Hindu deity, and last time I checked Hinduism was still a major world religion. And if you look at what I put in the contest outline it says quite clearly- “2. No Gods from any current major world religions.” So that’s a goner.

  10. Outcast says:

Sorry guys my bad I thought it wasn’t

  11. Outcast says:

Hey are we allowed to use norse gods like loki and thor as long as their different form the marvel version

  12. melmo44 says:

Had to make time for a quick entry for this one 🙂
Sekhmet- The fierce Egyptian warrior lioness. For modern times, she dons the attire of the modern warrior, appearing more human than leonine. She retains her crown of cow horns holding the disc of the sun, and the protective serpent, Wadjet.

I am loving the start of this active contest. 🙂

I do feel I must point out one thing as a pagan though. Ancient Celtic, Egyptian, and Norse gods are actually still actively worshiped.

NOT that I think we should keep them from the contest, cause come down to it and I fully suspect most Pantheons that were worshiped still are somewhere, or are again. 🙂

I personally am working on Baldur god of Light, Purity, Wisdom and Manly Perfection, the Norse Apollo in a way.
Probably wont post till Wed though since I have dialysis today.

(and if anyone has wondered since I mentioned it on the Blog, we passed the apartment inspection with flying colors and impressed them with how much we got done)
    Life is pretty good.

    Blessed Be

Been a while since I’ve done one of these, it was under a different moniker then. So, here goes:

The Eye of Horus, Sekhmet. With Egypt in turmoil, this slumbering goddess reawakens to defend her homeland.

Wanting to take a break from the life of a god, she banished herself to Earth with her to kitties, Bygul and Trjegul.

  18. WillyPete says:

Well, Rajah, I know which one I’m voting for! By far the most Modern of the bunch, and I think the best picture… 😉

So, the title was supposed to be “The Eye of Ra, Sekhmet”. Wrong God.

Ankou, The Breton God of Death. He is typically described as the driver of souls to the after life. He drove a black carriage.

Here is Apophis/Apep, the Egyptian Chaos deity who appeared as a giant snake. This is his human form, and despite that, he still has a hell of a bite.

  27. hawk007 says:

Everyone here is very good, but to be honest, some of these don’t really look that modern. I mean, not questioning the skill at all, and it’s not be decision. Just kind of an observation.

  28. Rene79 says:

Chepri, the God of Creation and rebirth.

@Hawk007- I would concur, but I’ll look through all of them thoroughly before the poll goes up on Sunday, see which ones actually fit the criteria.

  30. aidanhershberger says:

Freyja, in modern times, as the Goddess of Love, Beauty and Sexuality, runs one of the hottest clubs in town; Freyja’s. Sit back and enjoy the show, finishing up with Freyja herself as the final act.

    Entry #1

    Baldur
I took my inspiration from the fact Baldur was God of Light and Purity and Manly Beauty, loved by nearly everyone
Since he didn’t die in battle he didn’t go to Valhalla.

So I didn’t make him a warrior, but a movie star, and wearing a gold lame suit.

  32. DiCicatriz says:

A few Aztec deities for you guys:

COATLICUE – Teteo Inan, the Mother and Destroyer, patroness of women who die in childbirth. Coatlicue is the matriarch of a small community of Nuevo Teotihuacan, running the town with her children. She is a warm and nurturing person, but if you threaten her family she can shift into an earth-shattering destroyer in an instant. She also functions as the town’s midwife, assisting in most births.

    http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/DiCicatriz_Coatlicue.png

XOCHIPILLI – The Prince of Flowers and the patron deity of homosexuals, male prostitutes, creativity, music and art, Xochipilli runs the only bar in town, where all are welcome to fulfill their desires free of judgement. His presence exudes an aura of euphoria that washes over those near him, removing inhibitions and altering consciousnesses. This aura also vibrates the air around him in undulating melodies and rhythms, making him both the proprietor and sound system of the establishment. He is found most nights levitating in the center of his bar, in unmoving entheogenic meditation, exuding music and ecstasy from every pore.

    http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/DiCicatriz_Xochipilli.png

QUETZALCOATL & XOLOTL – The town’s law and his mother’s enforcer, Quetzalcoatl is the resident superhero of Teotihuacan. He leads the towns other protectors (his brothers: Tlaloc, Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca) and keeps its residents safe. As the patron of the wind he flits through the town faster than the eye can follow, flying at supersonic speeds, and as the patron of learning and knowledge there is no mystery he cannot unravel. What unsolved cases arise in New Teotihuacan are quickly resolved once he becomes involved. He travels with his brother Xolotl, the great coyote and friend of death, who can track the scent of death to guilty parties.
