Pop Quiz – Friday the 13th

friday-the-13th-mask

It is difficult to think of Friday the 13th without thinking about the terrifying image of Jason’s iconic mask as he poked and slashed his way through a myriad of teenagers in a myriad of films.

In honour of Friday the 13th, your Pop Quiz Challenge is to create a  mask creepy enough to scare the living crap out of unsuspecting victims. You may include the character’s head and shoulders if you wish, but the focus must be the mask.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

This contest will close at noon Eastern on Sunday, June 15th.

  1. Xi’Tian Mask
    A cursed mask said to turn any who wear it into a mindless killer

  2. The Oni Mask.
    Tarakudo is the King of the Oni, which are hideous, gigantic ogre-like creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads. Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common. Wearing tiger-skin loincloths they carry iron clubs, called kanabō
    They can turn invisible and cause disasters, disease,

    and other unpleasant things.
    These beings could also take on a variety of

    forms to deceive (and often devour) humans.

    There are 9 Oni masks that when worn, the demon

    trapped in the masks can take over the users

    They come from the northeast Kimon “demon gate”
    during Tokugawa period around 1603, when Japanese society was under the rule of the Tokugawa shogunate and the country’s 300 regional Daimyo.

    Some villages still hold yearly ceremonies to drive away oni, particularly at the beginning of Spring.
    Men in oni costumes lead Japanese parades to ward

    off any bad luck,

    The most recent victim to wear a possessed oni mask and go on a killing spree was Sekien.
    It was said even as a child he acted out despite his parents wishes
    “oya ni ninu ko wa oni no ko”
    (a child that does not resemble its parents is the child of an oni,)
    He was often the “Oni” in Hide & Seek games
    It was as if Fate had conspired against him from birth.

    (much of the research came from my own knowlege and from Wikipedia)

  4. Cliff, I love the fact that you included a story! And, a good one, at that…

  5. Sometimes creeping people out could require special installation of the right mask.
