I've decided that each month I am going to dedicate one character design contest to the Signs of the Zodiac, because I'm all about living your comic book like according to what the stars tell you. And I don't mean just Robert Downey Jr.
So your challenge for this week is to design the coolest character image possible with the theme of "Scorpio". You might design something around a scorpion (traditional animal symbol of the sign), or something based on the 1973 movie featuring Burt Lancaster, or a character that you think exemplifies the astrological profile of those born under the sign, or something completely different. It's up to you so long as it in some way ties into the theme!
The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:
- All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
- Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
- Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
- All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

Hey, I did a little research for ideas in my design.
Scorpio considered a introverted sun sight, with a primary ruler of Pluto and co-ruler of Mars. Origin in Legend varies, but the constant is that it stung and killed Orion (the Hunter). One story states that when Zeus put Orion amongst the stars, he had him always followed by Scorpion.
Here’s what I used:
Sun sign – gold
The rulers – Pluto (God of the underworld) and Mars (the god of war)
The legends – A tracker, forever determined to take out Orion. With poisioned blades, one cut is all it takes.

Scorpius
The astrological sign of Scorpio holds sway over numerous different elements; many of which are displayed here.
For example, the two colors believed to be represented by Scorpio are red and black. Scorpius’s costume contains both of those colors. Furthermore, Scorpius is standing on ‘The Red Planet’ (AKA Mars) with the black back drop of space behind him. Indeed, even his halo is a glowing red color.
Additional the Scorpio alchemical symbology is also emblazoned on his chest as a more direct communication of Scorpius’s nature. This coupled with the actual star constellation over his right shoulder emphasizes Scorpius’s celestial nature even more.
Mar’s of course is considered the domain of Scorpio (and therefore Scorpius) but so is Pluto. Therefore while he is shown standing on Mars, Pluto is off in the distance over his left shoulder, but close enough that it appears within his power to travel to should he desire.

My version of Scorpio is a member of the Zodiac Order, a sect of monk who live high in the Himalayas. Though they’re a peaceful and solitary group, they keep their bodies in tune through martial arts from around the world, and they keep their minds in tune by studying all the best technology in the world. They are known to be among the smartest and most skilled people in the world.
After a horrific avalanche in which he lost his left arm to hypothermia, Scorpio’s Brothers built him a cybernetic arm, equipping him with his namesake’s signature Scorpion Claw.
