Character Contest 39 Dinomarine Team!

I could not have been more pleased with the excellent turnout for the "Dinomarines" contest, you all really outdid yourselves. And I appreciate Jack Zegler reminding me of one of my favorite Calvin & Hobbes panels, proving some ideas are timeless:

One of the challenges when I came up with this idea was that I didn't have any particular origin or overall theme in mind for just what in the heck a "Dinomarine" was. It was immensely gratifying, therefore, to see a number of great ideas along those lines, but one in particular stood out and I think should be the "official" backstory to our team. It's from Galactic Ketchup and explains who these guys are and why they exist:

The Dinomarines are the result of a government operation to create an elite unit of warriors capable of winning the war against the Shadow Nation, a mysterious island which came to this world through an interdimensional tear in the fabric of the universe, which completely destroyed the island of Hawaii when it opened before spewing forth the Shadow Nation, who then declared war on the USA by completely eradicating the state of California.

Your mission now, Intrepid Reader, is to vote on the following recruits to the Dinomarines, hoping to assemble an elite cadre of enhanced warriors to battle the Shadow Nation. Vote for as many as you like, and click on an image to see it larger. The top vote getters will form the actual team, with the top vote getter serving as overall leader (and earning its creator a prize of either any item, or a portrait, to be included in HeroMachine 3).

Good luck everyone!

    Congrats all!

  2. MartianBlue says:

    Out of those chose
1.Sgt. Cody “T-Dog” Thompson is my favorite
    followed closely by
    2.Elizabeth “Bug” Daleski

Some of the others are good aswell, whether it’s the background, character, or picture as a whole.

Admittedly, slightly disappointed, I do appreciate the idea of the contest, giving me yet another character(71), I probably wouldn’t have made.

I am really happy to be in the running for the DINOMARINES team.Congrats and good luck to all semi-finalists this week! There were so many outstanding entries by everyone!I know I am biased for my characters, but there are really some great recruits here. Our DINOMARINE team will be a force to be reckoned with. OORAH!!!

  4. TheNate says:

Is it just my computer, or are all of their heads cut off in the thumbnails?

  5. Jeff Hebert says:

I can’t control the thumbnails unfortunately, Nate, you’ll have to click on the images to see the whole thing.

  6. The Imp says:

Hey Jeff, you’ve got the name of one of mine up there – Sgt. Bronto, but that’s not his pic…

  7. TerminusVitae says:

does this mean the contest is over? deviantart was (still is) being uncooperative with with my backstory last night and by the time i got online today, this had already been posted. i’d hate to have all my hard work wasted due to local time zone scheduling conflicts, and since it still is monday 19th (smack dab in the middle actually) over this side of the globe, i think i should still be able to submit my entries. so does anyone mind if i post my entries here? i’m only late by a little bit and it would be a shame to let a 4,212 word backstory go to waste. i’ll just post them here and hope; Jeff, feel free to remove them if you object badly enough to bother.

unfortunately, didn’t have time to make a background or a composite image so here’s a bunch of the separate ones that I was planning to combine.

    Colonel Rex

    Raptor Red

backstory awaits Jeff’s Yay or Nay. in the meantime i’ll experiment with it in preview.

  8. Jeff Hebert says:

Sorry about that Imp, the PollDaddy site goofed up in the middle of adding stuff and must’ve gotten the images switched. I’ve corrected it now, hit Refresh and it ought to show properly.

TerminusVitae, yes, the contest submission part is over, now it’s on to voting for the finalists. Sorry about that.

  9. BNE says:

Awww, I thought my croc marine was clever enough to get in. Oh well, congrats all.

  10. The Imp says:

Oh, no worries Jeff, I just didn’t want me to get credit for a pic that wasn’t mine, or vice versa.

  11. rancid says:

why was my entry name changed to torosaur?

  12. TerminusVitae says:

dammit. alright then. *maybe i’ll publish my story someday, and you’ll all have to BUY it due to its extreme AWESOMENESS! MWAHAHAHAHAHA… *end funny supervillain monologue*

aw well. do you think you could give us a heads up on the basis of the next contest, then? or at least a general idea; to give us a head start, and avoid another submission fiasco?

  13. Tango says:

Congrats, everybody! I’m glad that ol’ T-Dog has made it this far, and based on this poll, whether he’s part of the team or not, the Dinomarines will be a force to be reckoned with!

  14. Galactic Ketchup says:

Thanks for choosing my backstory 😀 now all I can do is hope that Chak makes it into the team!

  15. VonMalcolm says:

    A couple of write ins:

Henry ‘Heavy Metal’ Morton (Gargoyle 323: How did you do the skin?)
Mr. Charles/Grunt (I like the size differential, this reminds me of the law enforcement droid, the ED-209, in Robocop (spoiler>) which doesn’t stand down and instead mows down his compliant (pretend) suspect.

    A couple of contest ideas:
A Cthulhu Warrior, Wizard, Monster, etc.
A Mutant or Experiment created via Polluted Nature, Arcane Magic, Twisted Science, or Nuclear Holocaust, etc. . .

  16. Gargoyle323 says:

Thanks for appreciating “Heavy Metal”, VonMalcolm! A lot of time went into making him. The skin(or scales) were created by using the arrowhead from the BLADES 2 menu. (And I know I used over 225 arrowheads over the entire body!) I really like how the effect turned out on his head. Thank you again for the shout out!

  17. VonMalcolm says:

The skin worked out so well I wondered if you were cheating! I like how the scales form a throat pattern, patterns up to the eye and the back of the head, as well as patterns on the rest of the body. I would have been hard pressed to pick a winner in the previous contests, but in this contest, for my tastes, this is the clear winner (my own creations included!).

  18. haz says:

Oh wow. I’ve got some serious competition here, I see. I especially love the personality that comes through with T-Dog.

  19. Rhinoman says:

Thanks VonMalcolm. Actually my 8 year old son, who is really into dinosaurs, thought it would be a good idea to show how big Grunt was. Good luck everyone! Sooo many awesome entries!

  20. As always, had lots of fun. The Shadow Nation storyline was a good idea. I went with a variety of characters, not the overall team concept. So, not surprised that none of my characters made the cut. Oh well, there’s always the next contest. :9

For the ones that did make it, good luck. Again, too many likes and favorites this week to list. Props here:

  21. knight1192a says:

Ultimately my vote went to T-Dog. Way too many that looked a little too human for my taste. None were a yes for me, mostly nopes and an extremly small handful of maybes (like four or five out of the 16). T-Dog was the top maybe, Rock Asurus was a close second. But there was something about T-Dog and the placement of the grenade and rifle over the shoulder that won it.

  22. spidercow2010 says:

You realize now that California is gone, there’s some primo Nevada beachfront property available. Too bad about Lake Tahoe, though.
Kudos to all entrants, and congratulations to all the finalists. Tough decisions; I based my personal voting on this one on what a.) grabbed me with that indefinable something, and/or b.) looked like a lot of work.
Go Jurassic Jarheads! Sic Semper Fi Tyrannosaurus!

  23. The creator says:

here is another character contest idea, a replacement for the woman with wings and a cowhead picture you have now, it’s kinda ugly

  24. Jeff Hebert says:

Uh, creator (23), we HAD a contest for that months and months ago, and used a new set for a long while. Now the woman with wings and cowhead picture are nowhere to be found. Have you looked at the site recently?

  25. Galactic Ketchup says:

I think some people might be confused about what Chak’s doing as a Dinomarine, so I’m reposting his backstory in the hope that it’ll make a bit more sense :L

A native warrior of the Shadow Nation, Chak fought in countless battles against the strange Earth Continent, before he was injured in battle against the newly formed Dinomarines regiment and captured by the humans. The humans were surprised to find that he was willing to give them the information they desired, as he had grown disillusioned with the Council of Elders’ totalitarian rule and the war they were fighting against the humans. He revealed that the only weaponry used by his kind were their traditional zaitano, swords that remarkably resemble katana and are forged from the wood of the Toatol’ok tree, which, when treated with the sap of the Great Karaii plant, became stronger than steel. For long-range combat, they summon fierce energies, coalescing them into orbs before sending them hurtling towards their enemies. When he had given all the information he could, the humans allowed him one request, expecting his answer to be free passage home. To their shock, he instead requested that he be allowed to fight alongside the Dinomarines, the mightiest warriors he had ever seen, and who had won his respect after that fateful battle. Now he has become an honorary member of the unit, gaining the trust of his fellow Marines, even the normally distrustful Sergeant Ulysses Abraham.

  26. The creator says:

if you google ugo and then klick on the create your own hero link, you still arrive at that page

  27. Gargoyle323 says:

Punk, thanks for the nice comments on my DINOMARINES members.I tried to create a lot of diverse characters and styles. You seem to always come up with really unique takes in every contest(like Rolling Thunder and Dino and Marie),so I truly appreciate the kind words! I tried very hard to pay attention to detail, and I am glad to see others liked how they turned out. Again ,Thanks!!!

  28. Jeff Hebert says:

Creator, that’s UGO’s site, not mine — I don’t have any control over that. I do know they just haven’t gotten around to updating that particular page yet to the new look. But that’s the only place that graphic is used, I think, and it’s just a jump page.

  29. Nick Hentschel says:

Aw, Drat: none of mine made it. 🙁

  30. Cliff says:

Man, there were SO many entries, and so many GOOD entries.
I had hoped my Ty “Bring It On!” would have made the cut, although I’m sure you could tell I really liked Bronte, but didn’t think he would make it.
Sorry I am not commenting on all my favorites, but here are my votes for “team leader” (I did officially vote, just commenting here)

Nick “Rockpile” Lowe – AWESOME backgrounds and background within backgrounds – I totally Geeked when I saw all the very well done tech background going on. THANKS Jeff, for all the Misc items you added a little while back.

Elizabeth “Bug” Daleski – Great colors and composition – I wish I had your artistic eye (“Gomez take those out of his mouth”),

    Iberomesornis – Very creative,

Sgt. Cody “T-Dog” Thompson – Sheer personality and I liked the Bug backstory. I KNEW we would see a LOT of that face, since there were few reptile heads, but yours had Moxie, Chutzpa and Charisma.
I’ll be surprised if T-Dog doesn’t make the Team Leader.

    Sidercow2010 – I love “Jurassic Jarheads” comment
