Slots and sets in HM3

Fabien asked a good question in the comments to the last post -- what happened to Headgear and Masks? Discussion to follow the jump.

My thought is that Headgear and Masks (and Glasses) will all be sets of items under the general "Head" slot.

In 2.x, you could only have one set (or "genre" as I called it then) loaded for each slot at a time. So you could have either Headgear-Aliens or Headgear-Modern loaded, but not both. That resulted in a lot of aggravation when you wanted to have eyeglasses AND a face mask AND a hat AND a helmet all loaded at once.

So in HM3 you'll be able to have all of those loaded at once. So when you click on "Head" you'll see a list of all (for example) seven Head sets that exist. For the sake of argument let's say they were:

  • MaleHead
  • FemaleHead
  • AlienHead
  • Headgear-Standard
  • Headgear-Military
  • Mask-Standard
  • Glasses-Standard

You could have none, one, three, or all seven of those sets loaded at once. And you can load as many items from any of those sets onto the figure as you want. So you could have two items from Mask=Standard plus one from Glasses-Standard plus the basic head shape from MaleHead plus three items from Headgear-Military. All at the same time.

You also don't see things like separate listings for Leggings and Overleggings and Pants for the same reason -- those are going to be sets of items you can load into the Lower Body slot. I'll also have them broken down where appropriate into the sub-slots, so you can have one long flowing pant leg on the right Thigh but not the Left, or a glow on the Left Shin but not the Left Thigh, that kind of thing.

Making all of that work and still be easy to use is definitely a challenge. And I'm putting all this together as we speak, so it's certainly possible it'll change as I go, based on your feedback and suggestions. For instance, as I am typing this I am trying to imagine if it'll be too frustrating having to choose to load in both Heads and Headgear, and trying to put the right Dupe setting on each in order to be able to control them all, etc.

It's a balancing act, to be sure, and one I'm going to have to tweak a lot to make it work properly. Lots of beta testing to be done, you lucky dogs!

  1. well in HM 2x in each category you had sub categories for example in Headgear you had Fantasy, Modern Glasses, etc .. Now I know with HM 3 you can use as many items as you like from the same category , but breaking it down into sub categories will make it easier to locate the type of item you are looking for if you want to use a Knights Helm in your pick you go to headgear and select the sub cat of fantasy. That way you do not have to scroll through an endless list of all the different head gear to find that helmet.

  2. I agree with Kaldath. I always liked more categories. In Hm2 it was satisfying when after you went through one slot of say shirts then you still had coats and etc.

And one question is the dupe feature going to be applied to the main slots or the sub-slots? Cause I think having it on the subslots since there are more of them and that will allow people to explore more and experiment with items while worrying less about having to move an item out of the way if they don’t like it. And if you accidently remove the dupe button then you won’t have to worry about losing all the items if you have a lot from one main slot.

    Thanks for reading.

Also one question, could you recommend any resources to help someone learn how to draw. You’ve kind of inspired me to try. Don’t worry I won’t try to compete with you 🙂

  3. I’m not sure on the duping angle … I’ll have to think through that.

Hm, drawing resources … dang, I’ll have to think about that, too! You give me mucho thoughts, BB.

  4. UPDATE: The zombie app just got final client approval, so for the rest of the day (and maybe tomorrow too) I’ll be finishing that up.

  5. I supppose the back items would be a set in body or upper body slot ?

  6. You know, I was thinking they’d be in Other but that doesn’t really make sense. I need to add that.

  7. Wow. I missed a lot in the short time I’ve been gone. I don’t what all I add in the way of the ideas but everything you’ve said sounds great.

  8. What about a button to lock items from being cleared unless you manually remove it? That way you can experiment without the dupe button on, but you can still keep objects from the same slot on to see what they look like together.

So let’s say you like a certain pair of horns. And you want to add to the horns, but not sure what to add. You can lock the horns and still go clicking on other objects from the head without the dupe button, and you can still scroll through to see what they look like together.

  9. Excellent suggestion, Ballin’ Boy. I’ve added it to the list.
