Power User Profiles: Alexander Of Limbo

This weeks Power User is a brilliant creator (just look at the creations he's nominated as his favourites) and pretty much a mainstay on the forums. Ladies and Gentlemen, please give it up for Alexander Of Limbo

Character Design Contest ♯46- Cosmic

So guys, this weeks I want you to create something cosmic. Simple as that. It doesn't even have to be a character if you don't want to do that, it can just be a space background. I'd rather you kept the human to a minimum, considering we had a Space Heroes contest a couple of months back, but I will be allowing aliens this time, so you can go crazy with the weird body types and stuff like that. The only proviso on these characters is they have to be at a cosmic level, so think Silver Surfer rather than the Super-Skrull. I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with for this one.

As per usual, there are no entry limits, the contest will close at 12am Sunday (blog time). Please read the rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

What Were They Thinking: The “Marvel’ous ’90’s

Now, as we are all aware, the '90's were an unusual time for comics. It was the ultimate style over substance era. Crossovers and events were common place, artists became superstars (some undeservedly) and limited edition covers sold in their millions to fans hoping they would turn out to be a big money investment (Todd McFarlane's monthly Spider-Man series (Spider-Man) sold over 2.5 million copies in 1990, thanks to it's three variant covers). Now, whilst no company was immune to this (Image was probably one of the worst and best at this thanks to it's creator controlled ethos and the fact it was co-founded by Rob Liefeld), but whilst DC seemed content with mostly going for the crossovers (see What Were They Thinking: The Death Of Superman), Marvel went all out. Variant covers, rehashes of old successful storylines (Days of Future Present for example), splash pages, crossovers, massive guns and impossible anatomy were the order of the day, especially in the first 5 years of the decade. Between 1990 and 1995 Marvel gave us Cable and the X-Force, X-Tinction Agenda, Days of Future Present, Deadpool, The Weapon X story, The New Fantastic Four, The Infinity Guantlet, The Marvel Swimsuit Special (no joke), Punisher: War Zone, Operation: Galactic Storm, Carnage, Cable's solo series, Marvel 2099, X-Cutioners Song, Maximum Carnage, Daredevil: Fall From Grace, The Death of Mr. Fantastic, X-Men Fatal Attraction, a War Machine solo series, Force Works, Marvels and Ruins, Spider-Man's Clone Saga and X-Men: Age Of Apocalypse. And then of course in '96 we had Marvel vs. DC, need I say more.

Of all of Marvel's titles, the X-Men seemed to get it the worst. Ok, Spidey got pretty screwy (especially with the Clone Saga, but we'll come to that another time), but X-Men was turned into the biggest cash cow ever. Just look at the list above, every third thing mentioned involves the X-Men. They came to typify everything that was wrong with the X-Treme '90's, especially the New Mutants (nee X-Force), which was drawn by Rob Liefeld. Liefeld was basically given control of the series by '91 and he did his usual. You can see Jeff's old I Hate Rob Liefeld blog posts for a continuation on this, but let me just add, his writing is as bad as his art.

However, I don't blame the artists for the lack of substance at Marvel during the '90's, some of them I'm totally fine with. I think the big problem happened in 1989. In 1989 New World Entertainment sold Marvel to some guy called Ronald Perelman, some of you might have heard of him, he's a billionaire businessman. His reason for buying Marvel was that he wanted to make it as bug and profitable as Disney (irony alarm), not to create great comics, but to chase the big bucks. Hmmmm, call me old fashioned or even anti-big business if you want, but I prefer it when it's enthusiasts trying to make their work as good as they can for other enthusiasts, not to make some corperate big-wig massive money. That's why I don't have as big a problem with Image Comics as I do with Marvel in this era, Image was all about creator ownership. However, this approach worked for a while, Marvels sales had never been higher, and never have since, because by '96 Perelman's business plan had driven Marvel to bankruptcy. His plan to buy up other smaller companies in an attempt to expand the Marvel Entertainment group into a Disney style entertainment conglomeration built up a debt that they could not pay off and it eventually led to Marvel being bought out by one of its own subsidiaries, ToyBiz, in 1998. Fortunately this seemed to get Marvel back on track in some areas, such as the launch of the Marvel Knights line (check out the '98 Inhumans series) and they are now as strong as ever.

Sorry for the rant. Next week we'll be back to Sci-Fi corner. I don't have a subject just yet, but I should have something ready by next Monday.

Character Design Contest ♯44 (History) Winner

Last weeks contest had some truly historic entries (I'll stop there on the pun front I think), but of course there has to be a winner and this week we do actually have A winner (rather than having a tie like last week). And that winner is prswirve for Lapu lapu.44 prswirve- Lapu_lapu

Big Question ♯22

As I said last week, for this week's big question I want to talk about bad or even useless superpowers. Now with all of the super-powered individuals running around in comics land, it's inevitable that a few are going to have powers that are, at best, not very helpful for superheroics. So, what I want to know is, who do you think has the worst power set of any comics character (and I'm not counting non-powered characters here)?

Power User Profiles: Cantdraw

This weeks Power User has got one of the best shading styles I've seen. Some of his costume designs have been a bit, ummm, risky, but I can't think of anything he's done that I haven't thought, that's a pretty damn good design. He might not be able to draw, but he sure can heromachine. Give it up for Cantdraw.

Character Design Contest ♯45- Naturalism

No, not that; that's naturism. This week I want you to create a character who can control some aspect of nature, so things like plants, animals, earth that sort of thing. I'm not looking for elementals, so no fire controllers or geo-mancers, but you can have water as long as the character has some connection to a natural environment (think Aquaman style powers). Also weather controllers will count.

As per usual, there are no entry limits, the contest will close at 12am Sunday (blog time). Please read the rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Screen Spotlight: Big Bang Theory

So, as promised this week we will talk about the Big Bang Theory. Now, the reason I want to cover this show is not because of the number of references to 'geek culture' (e.g. the Green Lantern t-shirt dead centre in the pic above). No, the reason I want to talk about it is I can't work out what to make of it. Now I know a lot of people on here love the show, hell, the rest of my family seem to be addicted to it, but I can never work out if they are just taking the piss half of the time. Obviously I can only comment on what I've seen of it, but it seems to rely almost exclusively on the very old and tired stereotype of geeks being  socially inept, sci-fi obsessed losers (see the first Sci-fi corner, when we covered Star Trek, for further details). I will concede that this doesn't happen all of the time and sometimes it its done in very clever and amusing ways, but for gods sake, I grew out of stereotypes when I was 15. People say that TV, and comedy in particular, is based on stereotyping, but that isn't true (something we will cover on the next Screen Spotlight when we cover one of my two favourite shows of all time: Red Dwarf). Considering the success of things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, New Doctor Who and the Star Trek reboot movies (in purely financial terms with the last one), stuff generally considered as "Geek Only" are becoming increasingly "For Everyone", so why keep bring up the geek stereotypes. No-one finds sports fans who collect their various memorabilia (signed baseballs, hats, football kits, old baseball/ football cards, posters etc. etc. I mean there's so much of this **** I could go on for ages) weird or funny, so why is collecting figurines of Star Trek or comics characters? And my main gripe, and this is purely personal, but because I love all of the comics, sci-fi, fantasy stuff they routinely use, it sometimes feels like my family are only laughing at stuff on the show because they recognise some of it from what I do (although I probably don't help myself in that respect).

But anyway, that's enough from me. As I said at the start, I know there's a lot of you who love BBT so it's over to you to convince me that I'm wrong about the show. Sorry for the rant, I've been ill all weekend and that's not conducive to being cheerful.

Next week we'll be going back to What Were They Thinking and looking at Marvel in the '90's.
