After a head injury necessitating extensive corrective surgery, Elizabeth suddenly found two things: first, that the surgeon had somehow damaged the part of her brain that registers pain, making her feel agony constantly. Second, she had somehow developed the ability to influence this part of the brains of other people. Not long after the operation, after weeks of continuous pain, Betty went mad and began to bring down upon the populace the same torture she was enduring.
