When I first saw The Wizard of Oz movie as a kid, it scared the living crap out of me. It was not until years later that I fell in love with the cast of characters.
I have wanted to do a series updating the characters in a darker style for years. Think Oz with a Beetlejuice meets Pan’s Labyrinth vibe. Just use your imagination and have fun.
Your challenge this week is to reimagine the Tinman.
The winning entrant will receive a HM3 version of their character rendered by yours truly.
The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way.
Rules for posts, contests, and challenges:
Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters. No characters based on Official RPG NPC's ( Non-Player Characters ). Please keep all submissions PG13. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.
All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShack, Deviant Art, or whatever); Do NOT use Photobucket
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).
This contest will close on Monday, September 21st at 6:00pm Eastern

The TINMAN (TIN HEADSMAN)
https://www.deviantart.com/steelgeneral2/art/TIN-WOODSMAN-TIN-HEADSMAN-HM3-CDC-855184792
Early on in their rebellion against the Wizard and his cronies, Dorothy Gale and her band of rebels/insurgents were drawn into a trap. Only Dorothy and Toto escaped, all the others were either killed or captured.
A few months later the executions began, public be-headings outside the palace. The executioner a metal-clad figure wielding a woodsman’s ax – the ‘TIN HEADSMAN’. Dororthy immediately recognized the figure as her friend. Though he was changed, the simple metal body replaced by sleek new armor, his eyes glowing a green that grew in intensity with each execution.
Dorothy was horrified, but determined to rescue her friend. After careful weeks of planning she and few others in her group managed to kidnap the headsman and with some help from ‘Momma G’, slowly began to remove the brain washing. While not yet fully recovered much of the tin woodsman Dorothy had initially befriended has returned.
Too cool for school…this is the ultimate version! Cyborg-Mecha, Ninja-Samurai, Japanese-themed Tinman.

Angelos, what was the inspiration to have his loin cloth display the word for “water”? Celebrating the element that helped them defeat the Wicked Witch, or bragadociously offering his enemies to know his weakness? (I always liked that, with the Tin Woodman succeeding the WWW as emperor of the Winkies, two rulers in a row had a weakness to water. Next ruler of Winkieland: those aliëns from Signs!)
Honey Hovercraft…Bro don’t get me wrong but you need to get a girlfriend…ASAP!
Somehow I don’t think my wife (who used to participate in these challenges back when she was my fiancée!) would approve, and in any case, it might confuse my kids. But speaking of “confused,” was I right about why it says “water” on the loin cloth?
I promise I’m working on my entry. Having trouble finding the right hips now that I’ve made the torso out of beer cans. Also tryïng to decide if some of the elements are more like Tik-Tok and therefore should be saved for that contest, if such there shall be.
Thank goodness for the beer/soda can item and the rectangle gradiënt; this character is made of more than 50 of them! The yellow highlights are because he’s the eventuäl emperor of the Winkies after the WWW’s unfortunate “accident.”
The Tin Woodman of Oz
Really enjoying this contest, as is my whole household, which has gotten really into consulting on my designs even if they won’t (yet!) submit their own.
