Character Design Challenge #343 – The Spirit of Halloween

Your challenge this week is to create a character or group of characters using HM3 that personify the spirit of Halloween.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13: full or partial nudity is prohibited. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackDeviantArt, or whatever - Please do not use Photobucket);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). *

This contest will close on Sunday, November 5th at 9:00am Eastern.

    Nicola Autumn/Lady Halloween

    Powers: plant manipulation, necromancy
Likes: halloween, isolation, being ignored in public
Dislikes: crowds, people making fun of her
In a romantic relationship with her co-hero John Summer/Sun God.

  2. Avery Maskell says:

    Old Nick

Pray, my child, to never know
That devil in his cloak of snow.
Old Nick, Old Scratch, The Stranger, and still,
So many names for that deathly chill.

Turn back now while still you may,
While still light lingers from the day.
Stay far, children, from the forest deep,
Where whisper words that tempt with sleep.

Heed not the soothing voice which calls
To bid you welcome to his oaken halls.
Return to all both light and good,
Else stay forever within the wood.

    Run still farther from that cursed place;
None ever leaves who sees old evil’s face.
Forsake your courage, strength and trickery,
For that fiend has doomed men greater than thee.

His lost souls stand in frozen rows,
As tree and ivy ’round them grows.
So pray, my child, to never know
That devil in his cloak of snow.

Al O’ Ween is a zombie so he doesn’t go out much, he spends most of his time wandering around his neighbourhoood at night, when nobody is awake.

But for this very special Halloween day, he decided to party and made some tremendous efforts wearing a costume.

Ready to make some new friends Al ? Hmm well, not sure…

The Spirit of Halloween represents a duality, much like the holiday itself. On one side is bright, filled with costumes, candy, and fantasy. It is the one day a year to become someone else, to cover yourself in glitter, to eat too many sweets and celebrate. The other side is dark, filled with the grotesque, the macabre, and symbolism of death. It is a day to glory in the wicked, demented sides of ourselves. The two are opposites, but opposite sides of the same coin. Where there is one, there is the other.

(This is why Halloween is my favorite holiday!)

  5. Azukanwar says:

“Can you tell me a story?”
“I don’t feel like telling you any story Karen. Go to sleep.”

    “Please? Your my big brother.”

“Fine. Have you ever heard of Nerliak? It’s a skeleton that wears a mask now sleep.”

    “What does he do Brian?”

“Hmm. It arrives to collect skin an body parts, but he can’t get in unless it sees brown.”

    “That’s stupid.”

“Do you want a story or not?”

    “Mhm I do.”

“Than be quiet. Listen, it’s old very old from like the dinosaurs time. In fact it is what killed them, for their skin. It liked how tough they were. It didn’t like the color brown until humans came, because it reminds him of blood when it dries up. It likes dried blood on skin, dried skin it eats them like chips. If your door is brown it comes in and finds you, it sits on your couch and makes you wake up to check on the smell coming from the living room. AND THEM HE KILLS YOU!”

    “I don’t like that story!”

“Well you wanted a story didn’t say happy. Stop crying and sleep.”

Later that night the little girl still awake in fear looks upon her window to see a strange fog with a light emitting from it.

“What are you doing in my room ? Go back to your room.”

“You were wrong. He is very nice! He has pretty blue eyes and orange fingers and he is very hungry. He asked me to come in for food and I made him a PB and J but he didn’t want it.”

“Ugh fine I’ll play what did it want?”

“He doesn’t like being called an it Brian. His name wasn’t Nerlaik. It’s grandpa!”

    “G.. Grandpa died.”

“He came back to say hi! OH! Mommy and Daddy are with him now. He had to eat them so we could all play.”

Brian sits up and peers to his door with squinted eyes and sees his little sister standing in the doorway with something in her hand and a figure in the back. He turns his light on to see better.

“Now it’s time for you to play with us too!”
