Poll Position: Greatest Alien Race In Fiction

Ok, this week on poll position we're going to try and answer a question of truly cosmic proportions. Which alien race is the greatest in all of fiction. And when we are talking fiction I mean, all of it. The candidates can come from visual media (so TV (both live action and animation) and Film), Audio (radio shows such as A Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy or War Of The Worlds), Print (so Books or Comics) even Video Games. Obviously we are only talking about fictional aliens, so Scientologists are not applicable and neither is Herr D because we're looking at entire races rather than individuals. As per usual, I've given you 10 to start with and you can add your own suggestions. Please make sure you include the franchise that the species you nominate originate from in your suggestion and please, please only one suggestion at a time.

Inevitably, this is going to be a huge list. You’re going to get about 50 or so additions from me.

  2. William A. Peterson says:

Oans, of course. They’re the ones who created the entire Green Lantern Corps, after all.
Skrulls would be my second choice. They weren’t evil, until the Kree attacked them.
They can shape-shift have interstellar travel, and technology sufficient to mimic Superpowers.
And, yes, there are bunches of others. The Celestials, of course, could wrap the entire Skrull species
around their little fingers with nary a problem. Both the White Martians and the Dire Wraiths have most of the same advantages as the Skrulls (though neither is quite as friendly to Humanity as the Skrulls *sometimes* are. Daxamites are basically the same as Kryptonians, except for the whole lead problem. Of course, the term ‘Greatest’ leaves a lot of room for maneuver…
Greatest at beating up other races? Greatest at serving and protecting the Galaxy? Greatest at fleecing other races out of their hard-earned monetary units while only selling them worthless junk? {Hey, did someone just say ‘Ferenghi’?} Greatest ‘Deus Ex Machina’ plot device? Greatest source of indescibable technology, that might as well be ‘magic’? A little more help, here, in terms of what you mean as ‘greatest’ could be useful… 😉

  3. Herr D says:

According to “Men Without Bones,” the human race was an alien race. A spaceship crash brought ‘us’ here to supplant all other primates. (Apparently everyone forgot about it when they were telling the grandkids about life . . . ) So do humans count?

That spaceship wouldn’t happen to have been Ship B of the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet?

  5. Nick Hentschel says:

It’s a list where I wish I could vote for a tie. Without a doubt, the Vulcans are the most recognizable and influential aliens in entertainment, but it was Wells’ Martians who started it all.

  6. Keric says:

This list MAYBE should be broken up into the good, the bad, and the ugly?
Honestly, how do you compare E.T. or Alf (no don’t put HIM on the list, I want to forget him~most of the time.) to the Xenomorph?

  7. William A. Peterson says:

Well, Keric, E.T. and Alf are both single individuals, not species, so THOSE aren’t problems. Also, I don’t think either qualifies as any kind of ‘great’, While the Xenomorph is, at least, great at being a nightmare come to life…
Nick raises a good point, too, which folds back into what KIND of ‘great’ are we looking for…
