Poll Position: Greatest Sci-Fi Film Of All Time

So, the poll for our Greatest Star Wars Character has now closed and you can expect to see the result of that on Tuesday. However, for our next Poll, I've decided to go one step further and ask you guys what you feel is the greatest film ever made within the genre of Science Fiction. I've put 10 examples of films that classify as Sci-Fi in the poll below, but as with last week you are free to add your own so long as they are listed as in the Sci-Fi genre on IMDb. You can vote for as many as you like.

    Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to “HeroMachine: The Flame Wars.” JR, what have you wrought?

    I was going to add John Carpenter’s The Thing. Except, I have reservations about including a re-make as “one of the greatest” even though it is an awesome movie in its own right.

  2. JR19759 says:

    @Atomic Punk- Well, at the moment, what I have wrought is a complete walkover for Empire Strikes Back, it’s got 10 votes more than its nearest competition currently. Hopefully that does even out by the end, once a few more audience answers are added, I don’t want it being too one sided.

    Also, who ever added Space Balls to the list… you sir are a genius.

    @JR19759: “You ma’am,” you mean 😀

    @Linea24- You ma’am are a genius.

    Ok, I misread the title, I read Poll position was the greatest Scifi film, and I was wondering; wait, WHEN did they take the 80’s cartoon(based on a video game), and turn it into a movie?
    “From now on, Like your parents were, you are the secret force of Pole position!”

  6. Worf says:

    To those voting for Star Wars, while they are good movies (the original trilogy) they are not Sci-Fi.

    They do no deal with Humans (a galaxy far away)
    They are not about the future (a long time ago)
    They are not about explorations of what our future might be, could be or should not be (the main reason for Sci-Fi)
    And finally the main characters are magic, not technological (the Jedi)

    😉

  7. keric says:

    Worf, are you asking for a Sci~Fan (science fantasy) pole?
    if you are cool, but are there enough films to do it, might have to go with books…

    @Worf- You do realise you are now getting name dropped when I do the list for this right? Also, trying to define Science Fiction is like wrestling an octopus. It’s slippery, smells fishy and full of suckers. Oh, and difficult. If you want to go by the definition used by “The Encyclopaedia Of Science Fiction”, that uses a definition as laid out by Professor Darko Suvin of McGill University, Montreal, which goes thusly; “(Science-Fiction is) a literary genre whose necessary and sufficient conditions are the presence and interaction of estrangement and cognition, and whose main formal device is an imaginative framework alternative to the author’s empirical environment.” And even then the authors state that debate is inevitable, as the genre is not homogenous. Make what you will of that. Trying to empirically state what is Science Fiction and what isn’t Science Fiction out of all of the media that is labelled as such is impossible, as people are always going to disagree. The best you can go by is majority understanding, and by that Star Wars would be included. Either way, Science-Fantasy is considered a sub-genre of Science-Fiction anyway, so it’s easier to include than disqualify.
    Anyway, I’ll take my serious hat off now and go back to making terrible puns.
