Character Design Challenge #189 – Nana Nana Nana NOT Batman!

Batman debuted in 1939, but so did a lot of heroes and villains in the Public Domain. Your challenge this week is to visit the link below and redesign a superhero or villain that also debuted in 1939.

There is no limit on the number of entries. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck. The contest will close at 9:00am Eastern on Sunday, October 2nd.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

    Current Alias: the Flame
Nicknames: The Flamer, Flame Girl, Flambe’, Caliente

    Citizenship: United States
    Occupation: Adventurer

When Gary was a baby, his father Charles Preston worked as a missionary in China.
The elder Preston was washed away in a flood, but managed to save baby Gary by placing him in a basket.
The basket was washed downstream to Tibet, where Gary was rescued by a group of lamas.
They raised Gary in the lamasary, where they trained him in their mystical ways.
Through this training, Gary has super human strength.
He also obtained the ability to control and direct any fire and heat in his presence.
He can raise his own body temperature to point where he can burst into flames, or melt bullets.
He can also teleport from place to place by appearing inside of any fire source, no matter how small.
The Flame’s one weakness is water, which can severely weaken him.
He no longer needs a small, pistol-sized flame thrower to create flame..
When he reached adulthood, Gary returned to America to fight crime as The Flame
After Flame was injured battling the Octopus resulting from stress due to identity crisis he was feeling.
He started to wear makeup to become who he felt he truly was. and took on the name Mary Preston, While some called her the Flamer or Flame Girl, Mary just called herself The Flame as before.
    She drives a vintage Firebird.

The Flame was the first hero trapped in Pandora’s Urn.
The Fighting Yank captured her during the Battle of Kokura.
Her power was needed to keep the other heroes alive within the Urn.
After the Urn was broken, the Flame reappeared in Los Angeles.
In a panic and momentarily unable to control her powers, she inadvertently started a wildfire that caused the Hollywood sign to catch fire.
The fire was put out by the returning Hydro.
Hydro, the Flame and Pyroman battled Dynamic Boy in a brief encounter that resulted in Pyroman electrocuting Dynamic Boy.
As the trio was about to be arrested, they were found by the Green Lama and other heroes.

For some reason I cannot see your entry…just a barrage of pop up ads. You might want to start a page in the forums or try Deviant Art or another posting site.

    I couldn’t resist.

Here’s Six-Gun Gorilla, the first “super Gorilla” developed by Hawke Industries, supposedly based upon the DNA brought back by the Wilde-Carter expedition to the jungles of the “Lost World”. As a youngster, he escaped from the Nevada secret laboratories of Hawke industries and was taken in by pair of eccentric old miners. He lived with them several years until one day Dr. H. Horace Hawke her a rumor that led his people to the mines. The miners, fearing corporate claim jumpers put up a fight and were killed by the Hawke Industry agents. The gorilla escaped and swore vengeance. Armed with a mix of antique and modern weapons, he became known as the Six-Gun Gorilla and has harassed Dr. Hawke and Hawke Industries ever since.

    Entry #2 Doll Man

    Gave him longer hair,
a darker uniform as most Superhero movies do now a days,
added gloves similar to the shoes,

and although I didn’t set out to do it,
    once I realized it,
I did actively contine to make him look like …

  8. MarkH says:

Hi, all – I’m MarkH. You can call me Mark.

This is my first-ever contest entry. It’s definitely not as good as some of the other work I’ve seen submitted her, but I figured I would give it a go anyways. This is an “updated” version of the Golden Age hero “Doll Man” in the form of his granddaughter, the Amazing “Doll Woman!” (Yes, I know there was also a Golden Age “Doll Girl” – read on!). Actually, one of the first comics I ever remember reading as a kid was a reprint comic that had a lot of features from the Golden Age of comics. One of them was a Doll Man story! So, he was actually one of the first superheroes – other than Superman – that I was ever exposed to as a child….

    1939 edition:

    Real Name: Daryl Martha Dane
    Current Alias: Doll Woman
    Nicknames: “The Living Doll”

    Citizenship: United States
    Occupation: Chemist, University Professor, Crime-fighter
    Identity: Secret
    Alignment: Good
Base of Operations: Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; and a Manhattan loft she inherited from her parents.

    Gender: Female
    Height: 5′ 8
    Weight: 125 lbs.
    Hair: Blonde
    Eyes: Blue

Doctor Daryl Dane, following in the footsteps of her late paternal grandfather, the biochemist Darrell Dane (who she was also named after) earned a doctorate in chemical physics at Harvard. Her father had also been an accomplished chemist, her mother a physicist – so Daryl simply felt she was following in the family tradition

After her graduation, Harvard employed Daryl as a professor. Her research was widely published and praised as ahead of its time.

During her first year of teaching at Harvard, tragedy struck – her parents were gunned down by unknown assailants, who the police believed to have some sort of connection to the mob. Daryl, an only child, who was very close to her parents, was both devastated and bewildered by this strange turn of events. Stranger still, during the reading of her parents will, she learned that she had inherited the key to a mysterious safety deposit box which she had never heard about previously.

In the box, Daryl discovered several strange items, including a red and blue costume that seemed the appropriate size for a doll, and a letter from her father. In that letter, her father outlined the secret history of Daryl’s grandparents, Darrell and Martha: they were, in fact, the famous “Golden Age” crime-fighters known as Doll Man and Doll Girl! The letter outlined how Daryl’s grandfather had invented the formula to allow him to shrink his size down to six inches while retaining the full strength of his normal size, and how his then-fiancée Martha Roberts (later his wife) went on to develop the same abilities a few years later, seemingly from the power of wishful thinking alone, and joined his crime-fighting efforts as “Midge, the Doll Girl.” However, the letter revealed that Martha actually developed the abilities after accidentally digesting a new version of the formula which the elder Dane had been attempting to synthesize, but she didn’t realize this until many years later.
The elder Dane was attempting to correct an impurity in the formula, but failed. The impurity would eventually lead to the illnesses which would cost the lives of both Dane and his wife, Martha. The letter went on to detail how Daryl’s own father had tried for years to correct the impurity in the formula, but ultimately failed – the letter explained that he had kept the formula and family history from her because he felt it too dangerous for her to know – but, he had left the information (and the formula) for her, as he felt she was the only one with the skills to continue his work and find a “fix” for the formula.

Daryl soon learned from police investigators that her parents had been gunned down by men associated with Falco Corleone III, the grandson of a man who once attempted to blackmail Daryl’s grandmother. Police said one of the gangsters told them that Corleone had hired them to retrieve some sort of “formula” that her father had been working on, as Corleone felt it could be worth a great deal of money on the black market. Corleone himself had gone into hiding, however, and could not be located.

Daryl quickly went to work on correcting her grandfather’s formula, and soon hit on something that both her grandfather and father had missed. Correcting the impurity, Daryl used the formula to give herself similar powers to those her grandparents once possessed, but with slightly more control. Donning a slightly modified version of her grandfather’s old costume, Daryl vowed to bring her Corleone and his ilk to justice, and to carry on the legacy of her grandparents, fighting crime as the amazing Doll Woman!

POWERS: Daryl is able to shrink her size while still retaining the full strength of her normal size. However, unlike her grandparent’s, she is able to “stop” shrinking at a number of smaller sizes, beginning at a ratio of 1:4 (18”) and deceasing from there, with the smallest possible size being 6” (the same as her grandfather). When Daryl corrected the impurity in the formula, it changed how the formula interacted with her biochemistry and once she shrinks down to one of her specific sizes, she’s unable to alter it or to grow back to normal size for a time period of one hour.

EQUPIMENT/PARAPHERNALIA: Daryl utilizes modified versions of her grandfather’s old gadgets, including the “Doll Plane.” Like him, she also has a trained dog, “Elmo the Wonder Dog” named after her grandfather’s Great Dane. However, Daryl’s “Elmo” is a rescue dog, and is a Labrador Retriever.

    Entry #

    OK really odd
I went to get Black Condor’s original info to post.
He’s not listed there now. I did a search on him, and it says he was 1940.
I KNOW I saw him on the 1939 Public Domain page, how else would I have seen him to do him.
Oh well. I’ll post him on Cliff’s Eclectic Mayhem in Forumns.
