Character Design Challenge #187 – Your Choice of Sides

Ok folks, this week your CDC Challenge is to design a sidekick for the hero posted above: Major Patriot. Major Patriot, clearly an homage to Supes and the Cap, fought for justice through WWII and the early years of the Cold War before retiring to form and oversee The International Legion for Justice: a force for good made up of heroes from around the globe. Following his retirement, the mantle of Major Patriot was passed to his onetime sidekick.

The ILJ will be featured in future CDCs.

There is no limit on the number of entries. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck. The contest will close at 8:00am Eastern on Sunday, September 18th.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

    1st sidekick is “The Little Bomber Boy”, inspiration came from the actual nuke little boy. A smart kid who loved rockets and his country proved despite his age his worth with his creation of rockets, bombs, silent tnt, and variety of other specialized explosives. The rocket backpack mathmatically couldnt lift a normal sized soldier so his smaller form made it his alone. He Joined Major Patriot in battle until his age and growth made him no longer suitable for the task. instead going on to teach the new youth of America.

    2nd. “Start-Spangled Boy”. Young drafted youth captured by enemy nazis and used for experimentation. The last survivor of his squad his body adapted to the test and gained the power to blast energy. Tricking the Nazis into believing their brainwashed attempts worked on him he waited for a new batch of captured soldiers to arrive to unleash his new powers on his capters. Just as he managed to get everyone out of the camp, Major Patriot flies overhead coming to rescue the squad himself. Impressed with the youths courage and ablilites offers a spot as his sidekick. A position happily taken.

    “Following his retirement, the mantle of Major Patriot was passed to his onetime sidekick.”

    My angle to Major Patriot’s sidekick actually is when the mantle is passed onto him. I figure with Major Patriot fighting in WW2 (roughly in his 20’s), he starts to search for a replacement around his 40’s (1970’s). As the early 80’s creep in, your now senior citizen hero is ready to retire the identity. Not being in any war, his heir to the mantle drops the “Major” title and goes by simply as THE PATRIOT!

    A bullet proof textured suit:
    wings for flight
    Sheild Emblem for even more protection to the chest.
    steel inside the gloves providing crushing and slashing ability
    belt has pouches inside
    tail for flight steering

  6. Ross says:

    Gold Eagle, the grandson of George W Bush, come to train under Major Patriot. With his eagle wing backpack, and can-do attitude, Gold Eagle soars through the city looking for old ladies to help cross the street, and bad guys to thwart.

    “Behind every archvillain facing down a superhero is a sidekick ready to make a name for themselves.”–Camo

    Camo took down, restrained, and on rare occasions killed opponents for his mentor while his mentor drew all their fire and most of the media attention. Avastro discovered that the antennae on his supersuit were fake and broadcast that information before being, well, SILENCED. There are some secrets the public might not be ready for, right?

  8. joshua muniz says:

    Major patriot’s old sidekick who left the side of major patriot to become his own hero

    Valriya Olshenskya was a brilliant, daring pilot and a member of Russia’s Regiment 588. One night while on a bombing run, she crashed behind enemy lines. Only escaping her plane with her knife, sidearm, and a handful of bullets, she escaped into the forest with the Germans hot on her heels. She managed to evade them for over a month, scavenging what she could, but unable to get past the enemy line. Eventually her luck ran out and she ran right into a group of SS soldiers. She shot two before taking cover, nearly out of ammunition. As she debated her final stand, Major Patriot appeared at her side, on a mission of his own. Together they were able to defeat their foes, but Valriya was hit in the process. She woke in an Allied hospital a week later. The doctor had injected her with an experimental serum to accelerate her healing, but left her able to manipulate kinetic energy. She could slow a bullet to a crawl, or speed it up to explode, and she herself could run, jump, and react much faster than normal. Learning she’d been declared dead by her superiors, she joined Major Patriot on covert missions, taking the name Night Witch to honor her sisters of the air that she’d left behind. She was pilot, sniper, and backup to Major Patriot. Attention would always be on him, allowing her to work without being seen.

    Life after the war became difficult for Valriya, who had moved to the U.S. Initially hailed as a hero, these feelings turned to suspicion as the Cold War took hold, even though she now went by Valerie and had married an American man (a fellow soldier she’d met during the war). During the 1970’s, Major Patriot retired, naming Valriya as his successor. Her aging had slowed since she’d been given the serum, and she gladly took her old friend’s mantle. She is committed to honoring and continuing his ideals, no matter what the political climate.
