I'm skipping the Blank Caption Contest this week for a variety of uninteresting reasons, and instead want to run a more open-ended character design joint.
Your challenge this time out is to create a science-fiction version of a "standard" D&D style archetype. So you might do a "Sci-Fi Ranger" or "Sci-Fi Dwarf" or "Sci-Fi Sorcerer" or "Sci-Fi Mapper" or "Sci-Fi Kobold". It's up to you, but the goal is to translate something familiar from the fantasy genre into space. Like this guy:
The rules are the same as usual:
- All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
- Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
- Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
- All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.
The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me).
No limit again this week, knock yourselves out.
Good luck, everyone!
If i understand well need something fantasy based. If i made a cyber samurai is good for the contest?
Yes, that would be fine.
Ranger type I guess, Seamus of the Bearded Men of Swampwood. Decided to make a joke of larping character awhile ago.
you do not follow the style sci-fi
Ranger type I guess, Seamus of the Bearded Men of Swampwood. Decided to make a joke of larping character awhile ago.
===>you do not follow the style sci-fi
I have to agree with Sohier-Legrand, maniacmick — the idea isn’t to do a fantasy character, it’s to do a fantasy staple in a science fiction style.
I decided to start off with this guy. He’s an old character of mine that I think has a sci-fi/cleric type of vibe.
Jeff another question. I made a long ago a shadowrun style char. That perfect for this contest or not good. The char is sci fi themed, but the char is an decker (It specialist)?
It just depends on if you can “sell” it as being based on a D&D standard character type, concept, class, monster, etc.
Ty the answer. I think i not know how to sell it. So i don’t nominate.
I never played D&D or WH40K type stuff buit it just so happens that I kinda have been already messing with this type of characters. I will post what I got and try and see if I can come up with something fresh as well. Hope it fits the theme.
Sci-fi/well mainly sci-fi
Nice idea for a second character contest. I have a idea right now.
i guess this guy is a ranger, maybe a mapper his name is scout
Lets Rock end Roll.
My first entry.
Kiru the Cyber Samurai
Kiru is an Cyber Samurai, Whose perfectly move in and out in the virtual and the real world.
I did these just for fun before the contest was announced. I think they both fit as a type of SciFi swordsman.
The first one is more of a ragtag swordsman:
This one is more of a samurai, though perhaps not as easy on the eyes as Tarkabarka’s samurai.
Because the girls are unrepresented … and i’ve been making lots of outstandingly weird super-heroines. thank you Jeff for a lovely program. enjoyed the other versions too but i always wind up mixing from the guys categories to make girls that are actually cool and not comic cheese. i understand why there are less options for the girls but here’s one person that can’t wait for later expansions – alternate body positions and all.
lets see if i got it right. first post ever!
Sveeeeet! I’ve been kicking around ideas for my mechaverse. An opportunity to cast some characters. Viel Erfolg, Alle!
Here is my entry: TechRanger
I opted by a black & white draw this time. An elf with various cyberpunk add-ons:
Entry #1: A Cyber-Knight
part robot, all conniving (sneaky); Xzyim (zim) is a kobold, master trap builder and the best ambusher in the realm. Hope he’s working for you, or you’ll end up in his traps.
Firedrakes: Shocktroopers (Anti-Paladins)
Sky Paladin of the Imperium Bel-Air O’Fawn, and his Cybermount Pegasoid 51.
Space Orc, who works as hacker and shaman.
Skybandit: best wordplay I have seen on this site to date. I hereby declare for you a prize. I am of limited availability, but the next several times I see your screen name I will check your pix. Designate att. to them somewhere obvious the following: [Herr D, I want a brief backstory on ‘screenname’ ‘s char found in (name of posting) ] It will be done in my own imagination, in ignorance of the artist’s intent, once only, and you may accept bribes to decide who gets it. PG-13, void if JH objects or censors it, no offense meant.
The Elves of Mars are such masters of campflague that we have yet to detect them.
@ Herr D: Glad you liked it.
elf with bow and arrow? in the future, that weapons won’t get any chance to win the war. so they arm their self with sniper rifle..
http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg498/RoccoPio_Cuccurullo/SCI-FIELF.png a sci-fi elf
http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg498/RoccoPio_Cuccurullo/SCI-FIORC.png sci-fi orc
Here’s my contribution to the growing numbers of SciFi elves.
This one’s an archer – with energy bolts!
Here’s the same character with slightly different colouring. I’m not sure which looks better.
ive been running a dnd campaign and have made renderings for all the pcs and every creature just about that theyve fought. so it was easy to tweak this guy from regular goblin to sci-fi. went with “little green man” motif.
heres a close up
next up is Space Paladin
Entry #2: A RIFTS Leyline Walker ( Lynn Karrin )
(Warning: it is a fairly large image)
not sci-fi in any way but i thought id show the difference between the goblins as my pcs saw them and the sci fi gobbo for the contest
Here’s my entry.
Space Orc Veteran:
A battle hardened Space Orc who you could say defeats whole armies SINGLE HANDEDLY.
Thank you very much to think this with my picture. ARIGATOOO!
So i rethink the question, and i think to nominate my Shadowrun decker. Yeap not D&D class, but when i see it she is an ELF 😀 So i forgot this little thing.
So my Second entry. Carla Aegis the Elf decker.
It also appears that she is hacking a lock in this picture, so that qualifies her as a Thief/Rogue in my book also .
Thanks Kaldath. It realised me the decker is an information thief.
i call her the dark mistress. My problem at first was the sci-fi ness then it was the D&D style ness…
Green Skin Power!!!
An old character who I believe fits quite aptly as a Sci-Fi Knight
My entry fore this week contest:
OMG, OMG, OMG,
NICEEEEEE. GREAT WORK.
So my third entry for the Sci-Fi Dungeoneering contest.
Katlyn the Sword Dancer
She is Katlyn the modern templar whose fight against the evil demonic monsters. In the picture she find a waterfall where she want to relax and rest a little because a little ago she fight and had some serious injuries.
is she getting in or out of the suit? does it matter?
Getting out. 😀 I think i shown with the hands and the story. But hell yeah, She getting out.
A role playing archetype that no game world is complete without…
alrighty this is my first entry ever so even thought ive been making people on this website for like over a year and a half now haha.
This mans name is Haston i hope he’s what your looking for.
May the Norse be with you!
One of my old D&D characters, Ursa Bloodclaw, a human fighter, now brought into the future as a Jedi Knight.
my next entry is Robotaur!
argh. i suppose ive done it wrong. here they are again i believe correctly named
lil green man
sorry for the inconvenience.
barbario: Close, but it should have your name in the actual file if possible. So like:
I don’t know if photobucket will let you do that, but it’s the ideal way. I mean, I won’t reject these entries or anything, but it makes my life easier if each file name is
– .jpg or .png.
say hello to Bima with his new arms.
Behemoth-class High Optical Laser Death Ray
http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg498/RoccoPio_Cuccurullo/SCI-FINAGA.png sci-fi naga
Here is Ultra Knight. His shield is made of a fire like energy field.
My very own Sci fi hunter!
Be soft on me, it’s my second contest entry.
This is Legacy, also known as the Knight of Light (weird huh?)
Also i may enter with more but for now this:
I don’t know which one is better so…you choose.
clownprince – orchine
thanks ill try and get it right!
i have a question. Ive never played D & D so i don’t know any character types. Will a standard medieval or paladium charcter work? Ive played paladium once and it was with mutant animal thing. I’m just wondering..
It doesn’t have to be literally D&D, just old medieval fantasy types of concepts translated into science fiction.
Second entry… I wanted to add in some sort of goggles and thats what sparked my idea for a sci fi elf caught in the middle of some sort of battle. She is sorta a elf thief type thing. I’m getting used to every thing now.
Not the direct link of the picture. If you use firefox. Left click and first row.
Cyber Djinn Ranger
In the future certain people have learned to control special energies. This man has specialised in spells usefull to militairy and law enforcement, joining the largest mercenary agency of the Kebrela sector
this is the best one. maybe ill get second place lol!
Killers for hire will always exist.
Since the “edit” feature appears nonfunctional, I’ll try it again with the right picture. Ignore my previous post.
Here ya go.
This is Madrogoth, the familiar of the demon Asrigoth, who dethroned the Devil back some 300 years ago. This Dark mage has been given magically-based tech straight outta Hell and more magical knowledge than Merlin and Doctor Strange combined. He forgot his given name as soon as he came into allegiance with Asrigoth, who would probably throw him into the PIT as soon as utter his name if he ever got any ideas.
this is actually one of the first drawings i ever did here.
Another entry, a sci fi bard who is more in the vein of pop star than a folk singer.
half elf mercenary.. please need your advice
As a D&D character, Olwen Catspaw was a halfling who could speak to animals. In the 23rd century, she’s a xeno-linguist who can speak almost any alien language and is in great demand as a translator.
This time I did alien monk.
I give you Guko the ultra seiyon!
(This is in no way a ripoff of a popular tv show)
Here’s Spike… lost in time and space!
Spyder and his war-machines are ready for battle.
Herr D: Glad you liked it
Chief enforcer to Sculptor Erinynm, who made “natural-looking” dioramas from local materials on platform where the probe from the mysterious 3rd planet landed and took pix and samples. “Looking random is easy enough, but looking naturally random requires expertise!”
Why not create a D&D version of science-fiction archetypes?
Another bad pun…as if there are good ones!
my first entry jeff.. 😀 long time no to see you 🙂
sci-fi B & Y : http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k573/eddogurong/gurong7_sci-fiB.jpg
my second entry:
Red Garudaz: http://i1116.photobucket.com/albums/k573/eddogurong/REDGARUDAZ.jpg
By the way, Jeff, I love how you came up with a character contest based on Dungeons & Dragons! That’s just awesome! I’m hoping I can come up with something in time. Stay tuned…
wow. lots of people are using that new tech visor.
Okay, so here is Cira, goddess of magic! Hope you like!
IMO, this one should win just for having the balls to do it.
you gotta love a good play of names.
From “Against the Cult of the Reptile God”. Yep, I’m that old….
My fourt entry. (Personally i love the fantasy, and join this to sci fi, one of my dream.)
So my fourt entry is Disonia the Elf Techno Mage
The idea behind this picture is to the old times, the people think to the technic is a magic thing. So in the picture is an alternative reallity where the magicans use the technical things to looks like to they use magic.
A Sci-Fi Rogue
i love how you use the sorceror’s pentacle in alot of your compositions.
Aw shucks 🙂
Thy thy. I try to do my best. I really love this contest.
This is the character I created for the Robin Hood in space son of FNF, but never did the rest so he was never entered. I would consider him a ranger and obviously sci-fi, so…
Sci-FI – Ranger
You will be assimilated…and your little dog, too!
I thought I would put out another entry, I am having fun with this theme I think, lets see…yeah this makes entry #7, still not as much as some people enter but high for me.
Cyborg Girls with Hand-Grenade
my third entry and my last entry 😀
http://i1240.photobucket.com/albums/gg498/RoccoPio_Cuccurullo/SCI-FILICH.png a sci-fi lich
A futuristic bard:
and a sci-fi take on the mindflayer:
Here is my entry for this week!
The Black Knight the Destroyer of Worlds!
Here is my second entry!
The Cyber Dragon!
Even the future includes paladins, but with techo armor and magical warhammers and spellbooks.
SyFy Paladin –
Here is my entry for this week…DUNGEON with dragons!
Star Angel versus Mekasaurus Rex!
My second entry (or third if you count the two versions of my elf separately).
Not sure if this counts. Basically, I thought: what can I do with a ghost to make it scifi? And then I came up with this. It’s someone doing combat simulation training and their interface gets a virus where their progress is overwritten by someone else’s who did the program before. Hence the “ghost”, because it’s like their ghost. Sort of.
She rides along the main road of a post-apocalyptic land to impose justice. She’s judge, jury and executioner. No rest for the guilty.
(I created this character using HM2.5)
Captain Ken Torus of the 7th Sagittarian Cyber Cavalry brigade.
Probably my only entry for this one.
SciFi angel of death
I learned somewhere that Bikini Bottom, the location where Spongebob lives, is in reality a site where nuclear testing was once afoot. But I don’t think creatures like Spongebob or Mr.Krabs would be the result of fallout mutations. I think they’d be more like this SCIFI MERMAN!!!! HWWWAAARRRGG! Let’s call him a Merdur though. Merman sounds too… friendly.
Post nuclear mutant Knight Errant, Donkey Oatie, and his malfunctioning friend Sancho Panzer.
An alien warlock.
Raigal was originally a lowly space pirate. Then one day after raiding a trade ship he flew off course and was sucked into a strange vortex. His ship was destroyed in the endless void but he survived somehow and was hurled out. He found himself in space but was not instantly destroyed. He soon realized that he had been gifted with the chaos energy of the void and now possessed incredible magical power, in addition to having a body that was nigh on indestructible. Raigal now uses his power to command mighty fleets in his pursuit of conquest over the universe. He is now known far across the galaxies as Raigal the Conqueror.
The future of war:
Here’s my attempt at a space pirate/corsair. He needs help deciding which hand to use.
This is a rogue, I guess. I’m not actually sure what rogues do.
My fifth entry and i think my last entry with this contest. I REALLY LOVE THIS CONTEST. I can’t say more. Give me the unique feeling to make some extraordinary things.
So my next entry is Blacksparrow the Vanguard Duelist.
And not an ordinary close up for her
p.s.: Big big credit to AMS for the spinning effect. When i see with his majorette picture i think a lot to i want to make it.
my second creation. I tried to follow the classic characters of dungeon and dragon
With the flick of a switch, a normal warrior turns into a grinning maniac.
This is actually the role play character I am going to use for a Mutants and Masterminds game. He is an alien knight. His real name is Q’arr, and he is one of the lead Ionian scientists of the planet Ios. Q’arr actually developed a brand new form of battlesuit technology that is fueled by the unique life force energy that Ionians exude. The suit itself allows the wearer to travel through space at great speed, as well as enable them to purge any poisons or diseases from their bodies. In addition to this, the special alloy the suit is made from offers incredible protection against external damage. In addition to the suit, Q’arr also designed a special weapon known as the Force Spear. This golden spear is also made from the super-durable metal the suit is, however, when the spear is thrown it actually transforms into a powerful bolt of pure energy capable of destroying most any object it hits. Armed with these weapons, Q’arr lead his people in a defense of their home-world from an evil alien warlord known as Raigal the Conqueror. Sadly, the Ionians were unable to stop Raigal, but Q’arr managed to escape to earth. Now he is the superhero Paragon, helping to defend the human race, while at the same time looking for heroes to help him fight and take back his planet from Raigal.
Duke the cyber knight deputy.
Great contest, Jeff! So many great entries!
My Cosmic Elf Sorceress
Sir Tech, a Stellar Knight.
Space “Junk” – The Interplanetary Mongrelman hencheman of Sir Tech.
Ember Taint, Cyber Ranger.
Tinker, Deep Space Dwarf
Tinkers mechanical companion, Strafe
This got way more complex than I thought it was going to be. I think these two count as one entry?
Blink Dogs (Rangers):
Blink Dogs are mercenaries contracted by xenobiologists and deep space explorers. They are scouts, frontier diplomats, and mostly importantly protectors of native species from poachers. These elite rangers are known for stealth and swiftness. So quickly they strike, that they are said to “teleport.”
The Blink Dogs’ uniform is lightweight chameleon body armor. Their colors are derived from their mascot: the giant Azuran wolf. Blink Dogs are the woodsmen of their era. They are strong environmentalists and loyal travelling companions with a willingness to exact frontier justice.
Iron Golem stomps Tokyo!
Broke is not a word in Tommy the mechanics vocabulary. Give him anything and hell fix it.
-Tommy the Mechanic
Temple Guardian (Cleric)
Capt. Zain is the leader of a space police force defending the galaxy.
Axis is a living machine that has the power to change any alinement he chooses, Even the alinement of time and space.

His name ist Lion Lonan a thief who have spezialized of killing droids. He lives in a city called Tris-Khane. The Droids are a alien invaders and have take the city. So he

I have the idea form a own story, so i have the chance to get ones ideas into shape. This is the first time i used so extreme light effects. I hope its not to much.
Half man, half beast. Half chaos, half mayhem. Meet DragonWarrior.
Been a long week for me, and after one false start on an entry, I’ve finally come up with something.
One wouldn’t think faeries, given their small size, would make good mercenaries, but Captain Petalborn of Faerie Team Alpha would prove you wrong.
what do you use to make things shiny, like the white glare.
My last entry for this contest.
She rides the shadows of the night proctecting the city from the demons that dwell in the dark.
If you think your gonna get past him him…. your wrong.
Raijū are counter-intelligence agents specializing in infiltration. They assume civilian identities and spy on their neighbors. Often, these jobs are in research fields (colleges and universities, laboratories, data centers, think tanks, etc.). These secret police do not arrest or act until ordered. When activated, they conduct a merciless scorched-earth campaign.
Raijū have surgical implants that release electrical charges. For lesser tasks (destroying computers, disabling electronic locks, baffling security cameras and detectors), the charge is bio-electrical. Battery packs in their combat suits magnify their power several-fold (set a house on fire, knockout a local power grid). As a last resort, Raijū can self-destruct. The electrical surge has been known to melt craters up to 8 meters deep and 100 meters wide.
Okay heres one more
Of course I had to do a Sci-Fi Satyr.
I did a robot satyr once but wasn’t happy with it, this cyborg came out MUCH better, in my own opinion.
I hope you all like him.
this is a Grey Mage
he is rather simple, but I like him and his starry robe, glowing pentacle and star energy around his hands.
One of my favorite Fantasy races in one of my favotire Sci-Fi shows
Security Leutienant Chevan
Here is a Satyr Knight that could have been on a certain Sci Fi series of movies which captured everyone’s imagination.
His name is Ewan from the planet Capra. The race are Homo Caprians.
Here is another from Capra. Ambassador Libidicus. The Ambassador has been known, like most of his race, to party, drink and carouse to excess.
“What some races consider scandles, others look upon as achievements”
Lucky #13: Star Pirate on Space Dragon.
Just a Cyber-Rogue with a couple of energy-bladed cyber pistols, long chained grimson hair… oh, and a slain goblin… or part of it at least. The pose is custom made, type of jumping-whirlwind-battle-action:
Here is my entry for the contest. Hope you enjoy my “Boarding Party”.
OK, cutting it a little close here, but I figure I’ll give it a try anyway. It’s the cleverly-named “Sci-Fi Ranger”:
Forgot to say that the characters are the RPGs clichè of course: On the left we got the healer, in the middle we got the tank and on the right we got the damage dealer.
OK folks, thanks for the many great entries! I’m closing this contest now so I can get to judging.
Again my Cyber-Rogue with some last minute corrections-adjustments, add-ons and modifications. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Ok i am to late for my fairy but its ok
I post here
Damn, too late but hey, here he is
Sci fi pirate
I really wanted to do this one. Everyone turned on the awesome!
Ironman LOL ^^
