Character Contest 74: Libra

This week's Character Design Challenge brings us the conclusion of the Zodiac Cycle with the final sign, Libra!

Libra usually shows as scales, though sometimes that's joined to the Roman concept of the goddess of justice. You could design a character named Libra, or twins who are diametrically opposed (balancing each other out), or a massive weapons system code-named Libra, or a straight-up set of cool looking scales, or anything else you can think of that fits in any way into the name, concept, or history of Libra. This is your last Zodiac, so be sure to make it count!

The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:

  • All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  • All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

Good luck everyone! Since this is the last one, no limit on entries. Knock yourself out!

I most say that I for one am glad this is the last of the Zodiac challenges as I have found it difficult to find enthusiasm for this series of challenges, thus my lack of entry into all but one or two of them. I doubt I’ll be entering this one either, so let me finish off by wishing luck to those who have enjoyed the Zodiac contests and will be entering this one, we have a great bunch of artist on this blog and make no mistake making a great picture with heromachine is indeed an art form!

  2. Kaylin88100 says:

Yay! Another Zodiac contest! I missed the first 7 πŸ™ so this is only the 5th that I’ve entered. I’ve really enjoyed them though πŸ™‚
Wonder what the next “series” of contests will be…
Anyway, here’s my first entry for this one.

  3. Kaylin88100 says:

Hey, I only just noticed…NO LIMIT!!! Jeff, are you CRAZY? Are you ASKING for 20 entries from me?
    πŸ™‚ I kid, I kid. I’ll probably only do, like, 7. (She says…)

  4. dblade says:

Oh no! That’s like giving an alcoholic the keys to a liquor store!

  5. Tarkabarka says:

Kaylin (2) To tell the truth something not right with her right leg, i think it’s to thin. But the coloring is great.

  6. McKnight57 says:

Instead of getting all Greek with the history, I decided on a different approach. So I went with Roman mythology. Taking from the origin story of Rome’s founding, I switched som things around, making both Romulus and Remus immortals and making Romulus the good one and Remus the evil little #@$%!&* he is. Also in my story, Romulus saves the mother wolf from being killed by Remus. Having saved the mother wolf that raised them, Romulus is given the “Mantle of the Wolf”, something Remus had desperately sought for himself. This makes Romulus the original werewolf, and being so, he can change at will rather than waiting for a full moon. Remus went on to take his own “Mantle of the Wolf” by donning armor with the face of a wolf on it. He later became a wildman, living off the land and hunting anything and anyone he deemed a threat, but mostly just for something to do. Romulus is also a founding member of the Hero Corps (not that stuff for FNF, but my actual team.

So, without further adoo-doo (sorry, couldn’t stop myself) let’s take a look at the twins. (That’s what she said…sorry…)

  7. Kaldath says:

@Kaylin88100 (2) – I have to agree with Tarkabarka (5) there is a problem with the right Thigh of your character, I’d suggest making it a little wider and perhaps change the angle a bit.

  8. Tarkabarka says:

    My first entry

    Amaliel The Angel of Retribution

So she is Amaliel the Angel of Retribution. In the lower half of the scale is the sins, and the upper is the forgivens of Sins. So because the sins is more in the city, Amaliel goes to give justice.

  9. Tarkabarka says:

I think a lot to enter this picture in the libra contest. But if i see deeper of the message of this image i find a reason.

So this is my second entry.

Eriel the Angel of the Forgiveness of Sins.

I think every sin is excusable. Everyone is balance beyond the good and evil. All of us made bad or good things. Someone help the others, but maybe that person is bad with his or her family. I know that is a stupid example, but everything is possibe. We need to find the balance in our live.

    The scales of justice.

    – Libra was my favourite to do, just cause I got the clear idea

  11. Frevoli says:

Not unlike The Zodiac Commandoes, I have been using the Zodiac contests to build a team with connecting story

… Though as the contests went on, I had no idea where the story was going and partly lost interest in that aspect.

Although, the part I was sure on this that something had brought the Zodiacs from their viewing realm to earth.

So here’s a group pic of all my zodiacs in said viewing realm (all – not including the occasion joke/play on words entry)

    http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/283/5/9/zodiac_by_frevoli-d4cfr04.png

also – I lost the file to my original scorpio, so I remade him and tweaked the colour to better match the team

  12. Arioch says:

2 variations on the same design I did a long time ago.

Clearly not on par with the awesomeness we’re used to here, but, well, the more the merrier! πŸ™‚

Entry #1 for the character contest!

Imagine a world where every wrong is righted and no good deed went unpunished. Now imagine that these wrongs were righted and these good deeds punished by sentient beings. Well, the image in your head is of an earth-like planet called Anjaru. On this planet live the twins Angelica (left) and Nefara (right). Angelica is there simply to right every wrong that is done in the world, from the guy who didn’t let the teller know he received incorrect change, to the guy who pushed a woman in front of a bus…and got away with it. Nefara is there to punish good deeds. Why? Simply because she loves chaos. After all, in the world, the good must suffer with the bad, and Nefara is there to make sure they do.

Nefara’s powers consist of magically being able to alter her appearance being able to increase the probability of bad things happening. A “bad luck” jinx if you wish.
Angelica’s powers are more direct. She appears to the wrongdoers in the night and makes them aware of their crimes. she then punishes them accordingly whether it’s letting their crime be known so they can suffer the social consequences…or physically hurting them.

  15. McKnight57 says:

superfan1 (14): What i’m reading here is that basically, unless you put life in neutral and don’t do jack, you’re screwed on this planet. Not my kind of place, but I like the designs and power sets. Good job on this one. So for now I’ll just sit here and hope like hell that I never end up on Anjaru.

  25. Skybandit says:

Entry #2: Whatever happened to Pandora? There are various legends, but they do not agree as to whether she was wed to Prometheus or Epimetheus. I say she was married to the Titan Prometheus, but cheated on him with his brother. She gave birth to non-identical twins, one from each father, before she opened the jar (usually mistranslated as β€˜box’) that let loose the evils of humankind. As punishment, she was crucified at the line between Day and Night, chained forever by Zeus’ Law and made to balance the forces of Order and Chaos, nevermore to enjoy the brightness of the sun or the satisfaction of a good night’s sleep. Her daughter Panphosphora defends Good, while Panskoteena champions Evil.

Popular media loves to portray the hero as this emotionally infalliable being, who whilst being able to keep up with the demands of society I.E saving people, is also able to lead a somewhat normal life. Well Anthony Wilcox, or The Old One as he is currently known, is proof that this is not how it goes. Long ago, he was a popular hero, saving damsels in distress, kissing babies and whatnot. But amidst all the demand for his help…he cracked and let’s just say something about him hasn’t been balanced since. Upon his mental cracking his eyes changed color and his behavior changed. He was no longer always this sane man, sometimes he’d go on a bloody rampage, killing those that asked for his help. Other times he would actually help them. While he may not be of a balanced mind, his crimes and his good deeds sure do balance out!

Anthony can be spotted floating around back alleys in his hometown levitating his favorite weapon…the pickaxe.

  27. spidercow2010 says:

She worked hard to make it up through the legal profession to her current position as a judge, and every step of the way was a slog through the injustice of sexism, where she had to be three times better to be thought half as good, made even worse because beautiful women like her are not expected to be intelligent or competent. She also saw, all too frequently, the injustices prevalent in society, especially the inequalities between the haves and the have-nots. Her outrage built until she judged that it was time to take justice into her own hands. From her chambers, she judges, seeks out and punishes the unjust. Oppressors fear her gavel when Prudence dictates that they have been found wanting. And be ready to duck if she throws that book. http://www.deviantart.com/download/183292402/prudence_by_spidercow2010-d314lbm.png

  32. Zaheelee says:

Jeff, just now I am realizing that the image that I made for the Virgo contest had a concept that would work a lot better for this contest. May I make a NEW entry that had the same character if she was in a different position/situation?

  33. dblade says:

@ajw(19): Thanks! I appreciate the pity tremble. πŸ™‚

@PapaKrok(21): Ah, don’t worry. It’s a friendly kraken. Come give his tentacle a shake. Closer…closer…

  34. dblade says:

@Zaheelee(31): I know how you feel. My Virgo is more Libra than anything else, even going so far as to have scales in the illustration. What was I thinking?!?!

  35. Tarkabarka says:

If i see another angel with scales i give a copyright trial with that machinist who make it. πŸ˜€

  41. Kaldath says:

@Zaheelee (31) – Jeff has allowed the same character to be used in different contests before so long as it is a New image, though usually is has been redesigns of the same character in the few cases I have done it myself.

    Lucha Libra.

Jorge and Alberto del Santos are the world-famous luchador team “Lucha Libra”. Though genetically identical, they both bring different contributions to the team. Jorge, who wrestles in blue and green attire, brings an incredible speed and agility, darting around the ring and striking so quickly that he has been given the nickname “Avispa Azul” (Blue Wasp). Alberto, on the other hand, who wears purple and red, is the powerhouse of the two. Though small in stature, he is capable of lifting opponents twice his size with ease, thus he is also known as “Toro PΓΊrpura” (Purple Bull). Seen at the very edge of this promotional photograph is their manager Rigoberto Hernandez, who has coached them to championship gold all over the world, from their native Mexico to the USA to even Japan and Europe.

    Entry #1

Mark Miller was born blind. no one knew why. From a fairly young age Mark had a strong sense of right and wrong. This was partially due to the fact that he said, “I can see who the bad people are.” This was actually true. Mark had the ability to see the souls of people, enabling him to see who is bad and who is good. As Mark grew older, he became more and more cynical of the world. The courts can be swindled, the police are corrupt. Mark made the choice to take matters into his own hands. He trained mercilessly in the arts of marksmanship and hand to hand combat. He even created a mix of the two that allows him to fight just as effectively with a gun at close range as at a distance. Now he prowls the streets, under then name Justice. He knows who’s bad, and weather you killed a man, or just stole 50 cents from a convenience store, he will put a bullet in your head. Because No one escapes Justice.

@Dimmortald(66) – Very convicing idea. Battle trough the time and space.

@Hugh(67,71,72) – No problem with that is your first entry. I only help with the correct link. And The double contestant entry choose wich name you want to use and ask Jeff to delete the another post.

@Jessica (68) – Good idea Jessica, I have a little visually problem with her feet. The left feet is not looking for the good direction, and a right is looking to she stand in the space. Btw i give a credit for the idea.

@PapaKrok (69) – Hehehe looks very convicing. Great conception.

@Mrmatt220 (220) – The correct link for your picture is http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m593/mrmatt220/hm3-beta-6.png
and i rename the file name like Mrmatt220_Xy.png

  70. Jessica says:

@Tarkabarka: yeah, I had some problems with her feet. The problem is that those shoes are only made for those particular feet and I had to use them. I might go back and rotate the feet a little though. We’ll see, I got till Monday to come up with something.

  71. Tarkabarka says:

@Jessica (75) – I really know it. I made a little help for your problem. If i made it, i don’t use feetware, but if you want that shoe (sorry i don’t know the english name )i made that type of feetware in insignias.

  76. MLS says:

Hard to believe it’s been a year already. The Zodiac Commandos, my low-budget GI Joe rip-off, is finally complete. For Libra, I noticed that “The Scales” were the only zodiac sign that were mechanical, rather than a living creature. And so I decided to make Libra the Zodiac Commandos’ techie–the one who keeps all their equipment up and running.

    Here’s Libra – http://laurelcadre.org/IMGs/MLS-libra.png

And for everyone who likes the group shot, here’s the final version in full scale – http://laurelcadre.org/IMGs/zodiacGroup_lg.png

Thanks to everyone who’s encouraged me through this endeavor. Since I started, the quality of the artwork in these contests has far surpassed my abilities. I feel like I’m making the finalist list more out of tradition than merit. So this is my last character contest entry. HM3 is a great tool, and I’m still going to use it for my RPG characters, but I just can’t hang with the real artists any more. I’ll be watching tho.

With that said, would be it too cheesy if I finished off this entry by shouting… YO ZO!

  77. Blaq_aries says:

well my second entry, is Lee Brah, Sky surfer ninja assassin and member of a group I call the Balance, they right the wrongs of the world one person at a time, and he’s totally awesome,

  78. Skybandit says:

    Entry #8: Spaceship and Dragon

How about the balance between technology and magic?

  79. Skybandit says:

    Entry #9: Androgynius

    God or Godess? Answer: Yes!

    @McKnight57: Thenkyuveddymuch.

  80. gendonesia says:

    @Skybandit: I wonder if he/she is hermaprodhite :p
    crazy ideas dude! like it!

  81. Skybandit says:

Entry # 10: Republicman vs. Kaptain Kommie

Then there’s the so-called “balance” in American politics between the Republicans and Democrats…I’m voting for the Gnome!

    http://i1018.photobucket.com/albums/af309/skybandit/Skybandit-RepublicanDemocrat.jpg

Agendonesia: I don’t WANT to know what’s under the loincloth, I just wanted to recreate the old carnival freak.

  82. Skybandit says:

    Entry #11: Cuba Libra

I’ll sign off on this contest with a bad pun.

  83. Jessica says:

Okay so someone mentioned to me earlier in the week that my feet could use some work (thanks Tarkabarka!) and I absolutely agreed. It was not until I was shown how to do it right that I decided to revamp my previous post. So here is the second version of Lady Justice, who sits in judgement of all!

    http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg188/tvjess8107/Jessica-LadyJustice2.png

  84. Tarkabarka says:

    Great pictures all

@Newerlie (78; 89) I see the idea behind the picture. I think this picture is great. I have a few problem. In the remade picture the black angel wing loses in the background, and i think the body scale is not perfect. The head is too big and the body is to thin. BTW i give a credit for the whole composition i really like it.

@Skybandit (80,84,85,87,88,) Very good ideas for these pictures.

@MLS (82) Two word. YO ZO πŸ˜€ – Great great great.

@Blaq_aries (83) – Good idea, i think the scale is a little bit small and very don’t seen well in this picture. Btw not a bad picture.

@Kwnnos (90) – I like the light effect in the hair. Good idea.

@Jessica (91) – I tell one thing. I glad to help you. I think this looks better.

  85. Jessica says:

@Tarkabarka – thanks so much! You’ve been a real help. That particular problem has been driving me bananas for ages! Thanks!

  86. Jessica says:

Dang it! Heromachine did it to me again! Jeff, I keep having this problem that when I save a picture and load it after, it removes some of the coloring for no apparent reason. Is there any way to fix this? Now I have to go back and do it all over again.

  87. Tarkabarka says:

@Dblade (95) I really don’t like this picture because i really love it πŸ˜€ – Great work Dblade.

  88. Hyperanthropos says:

I hope I am not too late to enter the contest yet.

    Anyway, my character is Anubis.

Anubis, the Egyptian Jackal-God of Death. After you were deceased, Anubis would jugde you in the afterlife. Your heart would be weighted against the feather of truth. If your heart was ligther than the feater, you were good. If not, you were screwed.

    http://forums.ugo.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80635&d=1318690136

  89. Hyperanthropos says:

Jeff, I know the rules are that you have to name your picture first with your name, and then the name of your character. I have named the png.file Hyperanthropos.Anubis, but for some reason this doesn’t appear on the thread.

  90. dblade says:

@Hyperanthropos (99): You did it properly. When you right click and download the image that comes up through your link it has the proper name. The thread link just shows webby gobbledy gook (I think that’s the proper technical term).

  91. gendonesia says:

@dblade (95)the shine effect is stunning! COOL!!

  92. Hyperanthropos says:

@dblade: Thank you. I am new at this and I was worried that I was doing something wrong.

  93. Hyperanthropos says:

@dblade(95): Your Jusitce Machine is awesome!

  94. Rapthama says:

This can only be blamed by my latest lack of imagination but… Let them come!

  95. Jessica says:

Okay, I’m trying this one last time and hopefully it worked. So here she is: Lady Justice!

  96. Jessica says:

Okay, I am way outta my league! *sighs*

  97. Joel says:

    Entry #2

    Spirit of Balance

This spirit is charged with keeping the balance between the elements.

  98. Debochira says:

    http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/3475/debochiraskinzo.png
My entry is Skinzo, the Personification of Night and Day. Literally two beings merged into one, Skinzo maintains the delicate balance between every opposing force in the Universe, from Push and Pull to Night and Day to Good and Evil. He is neutral in the grand scheme of things, as when two opposing forces meet, they cancel out. Though he has the appearance of a grotesque human/demon hybrid, he carefully analyzes any situation and chooses what action to take with the balance of nature as the complete priority. Unfortunately, due to his status as Keeper of the Balance, he is doomed to continue his existence without Love, for should he fall for someone, they will inevitably loath him for all eternity.

  99. Trekkie says:

    Entry #1
    Bringer of Justice.

Based off the ‘Lady Justice’ idea -hence the sword and scales-, with the black and white parts representing a balance between bad and good.

    http://forums.ugo.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80639&d=1318766763

  100. Trekkie says:

    Entry #2
    Astraea (sort of)

A strange mix-up of the Ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian concepts surrounding the whole ‘Goddess of Justice’ mythology- so we have the weighing of the feather and the heart, the name Astraea and the Classical Greek-style armour. I was also trying to aim for a ‘cosmic balance’ thing.

  101. Balance:

    http://members.cox.net/freethespam/balance.html

I noticed her out of the corner of my eye. She stumbled from the restroom toward her table. At first, I thought that she was fall-over drunk. She lurched forward. Her friend caught her and helped her onto the barstool. There was a cane hanging from the table’s edge. I looked closer then smiled.

My 2nd entry for this week (sorry, I’ve been busy.)
    Night & Day

  103. Tarkabarka says:

So my fourth entry. I don’t want to enter more in any contest, but honestly I do not care what will be the result. I’m happy to make pictures and if someone needed i help others.

This angel is Iaoth the Archangel who thwart demons

He defend the earth. Slay and thwart the demons, and stay to balance the demonic influence.

  104. Kaylin88100 says:

This is so annoying! The one week there’s no limit, and I’m TOO BUSY! I can’t take advantage of it! πŸ™

  105. Trekkie says:

    Entry #3:
    Robot Scales
Well, they can weigh things on their own and can tell you the weight. Also they don’t wobble about like normal scales. So, sort of robotic.

    http://forums.ugo.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=80645&d=1318797644

  106. Kytana says:

    So here my entry:
    http://img802.imageshack.us/img802/9404/kytlibra.png
Is a little bit serious theme about the unbalance in the world. One day i go to shop and i see this billboard and think that we become always this picture in your head how beautiful the world is. When you have money you can buy all what you want, but when you have nothing you are nothing. That is the scale of injustice.
I hope its ok that is so serious.

    Libra Entry 1

Taking Jessica’s advice from her profile “Most of all, have fun with it! I still laugh my head off every time I see a parody in the contests!”

I admit the inspiration is a bad pun
    Libra = Leigh’s Bra
You will understand when you see it I think.
Even if she doesn’t win …. I hope she makes you laugh.

She does have a back story though.
Her grandfather was a judge and her father a Texas Ranger. Her family was killed by some outlaws and now she searches for them and any evil doers, she is their judge, jury and executioner, she is … Lady Justice.

    http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy240/Cliff_HM3/Cliff_LadyJustice001a.jpg

    Libra Entry 2
She is the balance, the scales, she is the dance of justice, she is the ever moving dance between good and evil, she wields the swords of the yen and yang.

    http://s795.photobucket.com/albums/yy240/Cliff_HM3/Cliff_YenYang001.jpg

    Libra Entry 3
I thought this was one of the most popular and modern versions of Libra …
    from the novel and film
Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil ….

  110. Tarkabarka says:

@NightForest(97) – I love the idea behind this picture. My little problem is the wing color, too similar with the background color.

@Hyperanthropos (98) – Very intresting idea for the libra contest.

@gendonesia (102)- Btw i love this picture. First view very annoying the lower body parts but if i see more closely i don’t see any mistake. I give a credit for this picture.

@Rapthama (105) – Very unique concept for this two picture, i personally have some visual problem, because the background is to complex and that steal my attention of the characters. Btw i give a credit for the visual conception.

@Jessica (106) – Not bad, but i have another visual problem, i think the left ankle a little bit looks like broken.

@Joel (109) – Good idea. I like the picture concept, and the unique sign.

    @Trekkie (111,112,119)
Bringer of Justice – I love the pose, and the conception

Astraea – Yeap Trekkie you find the balance with the things, visually i like this picture.

Robot Scales – Great idea. I can’t write more, personally i like this unusuall concept.

    @The Atomic Punk (113, 121)
Balance – One word. LOL. The story and the picture is so… so…, I can’t tell it. The two things give me a full entry. Great work.

Peridot – Great idea behind this picture.

    @Kaylin88100 (114,116)
Night & Day – Visually strong piece. Find the balance of the the two side of the picture.

Love and war – The girl right hand looks wrong direction.

@Kytana (119) – I feel the contradiction between the image that balances out the picture message. I think this picture have a deep conclusion, and i absololutly agree with that, Visually i really like it, very unique things i see in this picture. Personally this is one of my favs.

@SpellCheckingQuill (120) – Btw for me looks like south american, but im not a expert. I like the simple idea behind this picture. I usually think sometimes the few is more than the very complex image. You find a great balance with the character.

  111. Kytana says:

    http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/281/kytlibra2.png

This is my second fast entry for a happier feeling.

@Tarkabarka: Thanks that you see that.

  112. dblade says:

@Kytana (123): I don’t know if it’s too late but you might want to change “Something are different” to “Something is different”

  113. Jeff Hebert says:

Hey everyone, it looks like the UGO Forums are down. I have a ticket in for them to look into it, but until they come back up I can’t download the entries. So the results will be delayed a bit. My apologies.

  114. Kytana says:

Thank you. I think too late but ok i post. πŸ™‚

    http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/281/kytlibra2.png

  115. Kaylin88100 says:

@Tarkabarka (122): I know the hand looks strange but it’s meant to be like that. She’s twisted her hand round. I might change it.

  116. Kaylin88100 says:

Gonna put up 2 altered versions of my 3rd entry. These are BOTH being entered. Hey, I can do that, because there’s NO LIMIT on entries!
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/Kaylin88100-LoveandWar1.png
    http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h464/Kaylin88100/Kaylin88100-LoveandWar2.png
    A bit of explanation.
Love and War – two opposing forces, balancing each other. Also, have you ever heard the saying “All’s fair in love and war”?
It’s a bit like I’m clutching at threads here, but did you notice the word “fair”? As in justice, balance… πŸ™‚
    Anyway…Love and War.

  117. Kaylin88100 says:

I hope those last two weren’t too late πŸ™

  118. Tarkabarka says:

@Kytana (125) – Great idea behind this picture.

@Kaylin88100 (130) Love and War2 is seen much better with that hand, and the little story give a few unique this picture. But unlucky you late a bit.

And a personal message. Thanks all whose seen my four pictures.
