I'll be away from any computer access pretty much all day doing my civic duty and working a local election. Be good!
Consider this an open thread to discuss whatever you want, from possible Poll Position questions to HM stuff to the Olympics to, well, whatever you like!
Well I know you were considering drawing up some more armor, but I haven’t heard anything about that. We sure could use it. I know instruments was another thing I was looking forward to. I think another go around with eyes would be good, so that we can have the square pupil of a goat, as well as the slit pupil.
The poll questions and Olympics are fun and all, but I come to this site to see the updates.
i definitly second that.
all this stuff is fun and all, but it’s just not why we’re here
If all you want is the updates, you can just hit those posts and ignore the rest of the blog, you know.
Honestly, the hour or so he might take out of his day to come up with a blog entry and a sketch of the day are probably not slowing his progress on HM3. I think he’s said he was working on coding stuff and redesign of the lay-out, so although you can’t see the work like you can when he’s adding items, he’s still doing the work.
Look, I’ll post some pictures of items that I would like you drew:

I come for the updates… I stay for the randomness!
I would love to see HM3 being updated faster… but I appreciate that these things take time. So while I wait I chuckle at the random panels, admire the sketches and check out the competition entries for inspiration
For anyone who is ONLY intersted in the HM program updates can I refer you to this:

Now repeat after me…
Jeff is not my bitch
Jeff is not my bitch
Jeff is not my bitch
I’m with X-stacy, give the man a little respect and patiance.
I didn’t mean to slight it by any means. I rather enjoy these things, particularly the Sketch of the Day. I understand the coding needs cleaned up. I’m not complaining about that. Just posting the things I hope to see done first whenever he gets back to drawing some stuff out.
Yeah it is kind of disrespectful and ungrateful to say that we don’t need this stuff. The Random Panels make my day by giving me the laugh I need, the sketches are amazing, the updates, in my opinion, are a small part of this blog, and all the other things are just as important.
I would like to see Female Hands and Tops Female Tech.
@X-tacy and kryptkal: I don’t think Jake and Pyrate Hyena are being disrespectful, they just want to see some updates.
Have anybody else seen the preview for Syfy’s “The Phantom”? It sucks! The Phantoms’ costume looks like a big purple phallus. It totally, completely sucks!
I agree with Danny. About the first part anyway and about the updates.
I wish there was a way for a mask item to serve as a boundary item for another mask item. And for a reverse masking option for all the items, not just the hands.
I wish there was a Multiples All button so I wouldn’t have to select Multiples every time I select an item.
Earlier I forgot to mention that you can see the steaming pile of- I mean the preview for Syfy’s “The Phantom” on YouTube. Did I mention that it sucks? Let me put it this way: if sucky retcons were an Olympic event, Syfy’s “The Phantom” would win the Bronze, Silver, and Gold.
I didn’t want to be disrespectful at all and if it sounded like that im sorry. I just wanted to say that I, as part of the “audience”, am not interested in olympics and stuff. the caption contests are funand the scetches of the day are pretty neat, but if they and the other stuff are slowing down hm3s progress (i’m not saying they ARE, but it’s possible), they shouldn’t be given this much room here.
just an OPINION! doesn’t mean i don’t admire and thank jeff for what he creates here.
I don’t like having to wait two weeks to find out who won a contest. I liked it better when Jeff had the final word. I didn’t always agree with Jeffs’ decisions, but at least I didn’t have to wait two weeks to find out the identity of the winner.
I kind of agree with you Danny Beaty. I like getting to vote on the Caption Contests, but I think Jeff should get to decide on the art ones.
Needless to say, we’re all very grateful for your work, Jeff. And we’re very eager to see the next stages of Hero Machine.
@Jake: Which do you like best, the Caption Contests or the Character Contests? I prefer the Character Contests.
@CPrime: Well said!
Hey no worries, I wish things were going faster too. Code rewrites don’t have the immediate satisfaction of art items, necessary though they are. I am taking a code break to do the female hands at least, though, after I finish up a quick backend update for UGO.
The bloggy stuff doesn’t make the HM3 project take longer, really, since I can only do so much before I have to stop and change gears anyway. Plus it’s another traffic-generating avenue to help make UGO want to keep employing me.
@Jeff: Welcome back! “Working a local election.” Does that mean you stood outside the voting place promising free bottles of whiskey to those that vote for your candidate?
I like the Character Contests better. I’ve about always agreed with who Jeff chose as the winner of the Character Contests.
But the Caption Contests are different because not everyone has the same sense of humor. That’s why I like that one being brought to a vote, so that a consensus can be taken.
I hope this makes some sense.
@Danny Beaty well that would get you my vote π
@SynnerSaint: Now I see how you earned the first half of your name. I’m kidding with you.
Still here actually, just snuck out briefly.
Doctor Doom versus Superman: who would win?
@Jeff: Are you referring to the voting place?
@Jeff: I’m glad you will be doing female hands. I’m not good at jury rigging male hands to make female hands. While I have your attention, did you see the preview for Syfys’ “The Phantom”?
Also, a simple bikini top for the women would be appreciated. A item that covers that part of the body to put add onto other tops.
Jeff is working on female hands–hurray! (That sounded weirder than I meant it to) π
Anyone have a Masking tutorial? :/
Thanks!
@The Atomic Punk: I believe the link to the masking tutorial is right at the top of the column to the right…. in the quick links section right below the UGO add for heromachine. Right above the poll position. Hope that helps π
I also agree with Danny & Jake about the character contests. As Danny said, I don’t always agree with Jeff’s choices either, but I still prefer the old way. I miss the little descriptions each honorable mention used to get, describing what Jeff liked about them.
I’m open to going back to the old way for the character contests. I thought people would like the chance to vote, but if not I don’t mind picking them myself.
voting for Character Contests reminds me of the fnf.
lets vote on captions Contests not Character Contests.
and when on you going to work on hm3 items ?
@Jeff: Go back to the old ways. Instead of waiting two weeks to find out I lost, I would only have to wait one week to find out I lost.
It’s 2:00am. Do you know where your children are?
STIPULATING, right off the bat, that Jeff is no one’s bitch and is, in fact, The Man, I nonetheless admit I was selfishly pleased to see what looked like an open forum for unlimited discussion. I (like all of us I’m sure) have a wish list of stuff I’d like to see–someday–on HM3, subject to Jeff’s abilities, demands and inclinations of course, and this looked like a place appropriate for venting it. I decided long ago if I ever won one of these contests I’d ask for a nice set of feminine abs. No, not for me, for the characters.
And while I like what I’m seeing for the upcoming new UI, there are minor functionality flaws in HM3 as it presently is that, while certainly not enough to keep me away, are irksome, especially since I don’t even know if I’m the only one with the issue or if it’s application-wide. I probably should just shut up and wait for HM3.1, but–
I guess what I’m taking forever to say is I think we can have a wide-open (respectful) forum, here or elsewhere, without apologizing to Jeff every other post. It might even do more good than harm.
@Danny Beaty re post 25: Can Wolverine cut Wonder Woman’s rope? Given enough prep time, could Ace the Bat-Hound defeat Krypto?
By the way, while I’m at it, when I save a character (using the ‘floppy’ icon, not making a jpeg), where is it saved? On my PC someplace, or out in cyberspace somewhere, or what? Anybody?
Agreed, no need to apologize every other post for anything, I’m a big boy and can take criticism (well, most of the time), and you have every right to ask for things you want. I need that kind of feedback to know what I need to be working on, in your eyes.
The saved Flash shared object library files are where your characters are saved (.sol for you Windows users) are LIKE cookies, but they are NOT actual cookies. They are not stored in the shared internet data files and will not be deleted if you erase all your cookies. You can only remove them by right-clicking on the movie, and going to Flash Settings, removing them there.
Violodion found them in his Windows installation at %AppData%MacromediaFlash Player#SharedObjects\www.heromachine.comhm3
He was able to copy those and move them to another computer in the same directory and load his characters there.
On my Mac they are in HD / User / / Library / Preferences / Macromedia / Flash Player / #SharedObjects / / http://www.heromachine.com / hm3 / heromachine3.swf / hmcharacters.sol
Hope that helps.
@spidercow: Do you shoot webbing from your udders, or is such a thing “udder” nonsense? I don’t believe Wolverine could cut Wonder Woman’s rope, but he could sure cut the hell out of Wonder Woman. If Ace the Bat-Hound was wearing his green kryptonite dentures he could indeed defeat Krypto.
Could Ace the Bat-Hound beat Rex the Wonder-Dog?
@Jeff: I hope Ace and Rex would beat the crap out of Marvin and Wendys’ Wonder Dog, and then rip the throats out of Marvin and Wendy. Ah “Super Friends”. What a waste of good talent.
I’m old enough to recall Supergirl’s pet supercat, Streaky. It occurred to me a while ago that it might be a good story if a Supercat showed up on Earth, but acted like a real cat, with all its predator instincts and amorality. Birds being eaten in droves… Another worthy opponent for Krypto. But a seriously reduced rat population anyway.
Re:Superfriends, has everybody seen this?
http://www.seanbaby.com/super.htm
I apologize for biting your heads off, guys. Didn’t mean it to come out that way, but it did anyway, didn’t it? So, sorry, my bad.
Things i want? I’d really like for you do to Fantasy clothes and armor after coding.
I want Catherine Zeta Jones to wake up, realize her marriage to Michael Douglas was all a disturbing dream, then call me and demand to know when I planned on asking her out on a date.
Just sayin’.
(Hey, it’s an open thread, right?)
And I wish somebody’d made a Wonder Woman movie with CZJ when she was a bit younger. Personally I think she’s still fine, but no doubt many would disagree.
I suspect somebody offered, but Douglas wanted to play Steve Trevor and the project tanked.
Megan Fox would be good as Wonder Woman, and CZJ could play WW’s mom.
I won’t deny that Megan Fox is hot and all, but find ANY picture of her, and she’s got those cold, dead, vacant eyes…
@Worf. Thanks! My internationally renowned goldfish attention span has a worthy adversary.
@spidercow: That Superfriends site is freakin’ hilarious!
Here’s something I hope can be fixed in the coding. Whenever I apply a pattern to an item, larger items won’t be completely patterned. Usually it isn’t much of a problem, but I was trying to give a character scaly wings just now and the pattern would not reach all the way across (I’m doing wide screen).
