Character Design Challenge ♯151- Get In Shape

So, new year, new CDC's. For this years contests I'm going to be focusing more on the Challenge aspect rather than the Contest aspect. I'm also only planning to take the CDC's up to the 300th contest, which is going to be CDC197 under the current numbering, and then see what happens afterwards. As with the end of last year, I will be judging the contests and picking a winner at the end of each week, so polls will not be making a return.

Anyway, in line with the new CDC ideology, this weeks Challenge is for you to only use shapes in creating your character. And when I say character, I mean character, no random combinations of shapes into some form of abstract or minimalist art. You are only allowed to use items in the Insignia's or Backgrounds- Shapes/ Backgrounds- WordBalloons categories and nothing else.

As per usual, no limits on the number of entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

If you don’t know how to enter, there’s a handy little diagram below the jump.

Here is my Get In Shape entry

    Was pretty fun too.

Not sure what his name is
You said character, you didn’t say it couldn’t be a portrait instead of a full body shot though, so hope this is OK.
I ALMOST made him a satyr, but already had the shirt made, so didn’t.
I can add the txt if anyone doubts I stayed within the rules:D

Since JR is judging and there are no polls I see no harm in saying, That’s pretty impressive work Cliff

Cool idea, JR! My comp is down and out again. Hopefully I can get a power supply in the next couple of days, and enter. Sounds like a lot of fun!

@Cliff – That is pretty impressive! Awesome job… It looks like you may have used some “Pattern” pieces for your shading. I don’t think those pieces are aloud though. You can get relatively the same effect if you take on Jeimuzu’s shading style, and lower the alpha settings on certain insignias. Or JR could be cool about it and let us use said patterns… ;). Eh? Eeeehh? 😀 (It is… technically… a shape.)

@Nug- There are gradient items in Background-Shapes.

  6. Avatar cliff says:

    Thanks for the kind comment

Nope. No Patterns were used. 🙂
As JR said, I used Background Shapes gradient, about 18 of them, for most of my shading, other than the collar shading which was the same Insignia Shape as the collar

  7. Avatar Nug says:

@ Cliff – I did not know this. Maybe if I did backgrounds more often I wouldn’t jump to conclusions. 😀

    2nd Entry

For the last several years I have participated in a Nengajo -Japanese New Year haiku postcard exchange with some haiku friends.
This year is “Year Of The Monkey”
to be specifit it’s the Fire Monkey
which starts Feb 8 this year.

so here is my haiku and the haiga (haiku accompanying art, which does NOT have to relate nessasarily to the actual haiku, many say it definately shouldn’t but add to the verse)

I tried to do it as an old sumi-e (brush and ink) painting
the chop (name stamp) stands for my haigo (haiku penname) which is “kawazu” (the old literary word for “frog”, which a famous haiku was written about by Matsuo Basho “the grandfather of haiku”)

    Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu **

(* this stands for 3 Japanese new year traditions)
    (** Happy New Year)

PS Haiku do NOT have to be 5/7/5 syllables nowadays, once they got into translations better they realize Japanese is said faster then English and 5/7/5 English is longer and has more info in it than 5/7/5 Japanese
