Character Design Contest ♯82- Silver Age

So, as we did that Golden Age last week, this week we'll do the Silver Age. So design wise think of characters introduced between 1956 and 1970. If you really want to make things interesting you can redesign/ relaunch one of the characters you entered in last weeks contest (if you entered) like DC and Marvel did during this period. However this isn't a requirement.

No prizes for guessing what next weeks contest is going to be.

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Here is mine. His name is Patriot Man. Had him from a while ago, so decided to use him here.

Question: For those of us not as familiar with comics history, could you give us a little more detail on what a “Silver Age” design might look like? I know the Barry Allen Flash and most of the Marvel characters came out during this time, so I guess bright colors and SF would be part of it?

  3. JR19759 says:

@EssayM- Yeah. My suggestion for anyone not familiar with the Silver Age of comics is go onto Google Images and search for The Avengers Issue 1 or The Justice League Of America Issue 1. Those covers will give you a pretty good overviews of the style we’re talking about. Also, I would advise only using four colours in a costume (not including black for shading and the peach for skin colour) because that is what the comics printers around this time could handle.

  4. WillyPete says:

Close, JR, but not quite… Yes, they used 4-color printing, but remember that red plus blue yields purple, or where would Galactus get his finery? 😉
You can mix and match a bit, but, yes, the color palette was limited.
More importantly, the Costumes were usually bold and definite, as opposed to, say, 90s style “Put a Big Gun and a Leather Jacket on him, he’ll be fine!” sensibilities…

  5. Phatchick says:

Lazar has the ability to manipulate light into highly realistic holograms. With concentration, she can even give them substance and use them to trounce any villain foolish enough to take her on.

  6. Phatchick says:

Additional note: I got my inspiration for the design from late 60s, early 70s costumes worn by Wonder Woman (in her Martial arts phase) and Saturn Girl from the Legion of Superheros.

  7. Phatchick says:

When monsters are overrunning Japanese cities, who do they call? Tengu – the toughest lady mecha of all time. Her costume was inspired by classic manga of the late 60s.

  8. Midnight Owl says:

Silver age version of my favorite original character Midnight Owl.

I took extra care to make the whole scene no more than 5 different colors like comics back in the 60’s and 70’s, so i hope it pays off.

  9. Herr D says:

Getting into and out of her enemies’ stronghold is never a problem. The problem is staying anywhere in particular!

  10. livewyre1014 says:

Able to shrink down his body to less than an inch tall, Jerry Smith is THE TUMBLER, the human lock pick!!!

  11. Rick Slechter says:

Haven’t entered in a while, hope this is the right link.

    The Crimson Crusader

  12. italian tales says:

Steelbot, Solar Girl, The Purple Archer, Sheriff ad The Green Troll are: THE REVENGERS

  13. Cliff says:

    Silver Age Shooting Star

It’s been a busy week, and I promised not do too many entries this time.

So here is silver age Shooting Star

    Close up

  14. EssayM says:

Forgot to say his name is The Hellion (though you could probably gather that from the link).

  15. Dovahkiin says:

The classic 1950’s Police Detective with nothing to lose; Det. Richard Weatherby

  16. Skybandit says:

Since DC had to change Captain Marvel’s name when they brought him back, so Colonel Miracle gets named after his magic word…

Both the JLA and the Avengers originally had 5 males and I female, plus a hipster character as mascot (Snapper Carr and Rick Jones)…

The hardest part was making that damn CCA stamp!

  17. Vampyrist says:

Doc Starr’s silver age look, which is a space suit he uses to fight crime with as Starr.

  18. JR19759 says:

Ok guys, this weeks contest is now closed. The poll will be up shortly.
