Character Design Contest ♯36- Reviving The Brand

As we had so much fun with last weeks Public Domain contest, I thought this week we'd do another. What I want you to do this week is go to this list http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Comic_Book_Characters and do the next generation of any of these public domain comic book characters. Think Alan Scott- Hal Jordan or Jay Garrick- Barry Allen. You just have to keep the same powers, the same gimmick/ logo (if applicable, i.e. the power ring for Green Lantern) and the name. You can change everything else if you want.

Make sure you don't re-enter any characters that you have entered into previous Public Domain contests as they will be disqualified. You can only enter characters on this list (there are over ten pages so hopefully you'll find something you like the look of).

Please make sure you have read the rules before entering. As usual, no limit on entries, so have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

  1. Cool – I’ll start with a character I made up for my 50-states-run (after the contest for that was over, so it wasn’t entered in a contest before)…

    Original:

    http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Fighting_Yank

    Next Generation:

    http://www.madjack.de/comics/contests/MadJack-FightingYank.png

    Story:

Carter Farwell was a high school history teacher in New Haven, Connecticut who one day gave his students the task to create their family tree. This lead him to research his own ancestry and on the search for documents he found an old trunk with the inscription “Bruce Carter – 1778” in the attic of his grandmothers house.

When he opened it, he discovered an age-old cloak and a same-aged tri-corner along with a slighty younger-appearing mask and a diary with the label “Bruce Carter III – The Fighting Yank – 1941-1971”. As he couriously grabbed the diary, his hand touched the old cloak and it began to glow in the half-dark attic. At the same moment the ghosts of two man appeared in front of him.

Frightened to death by the apparition Carter ran screaming to the hatch to the attic, but stumbled just before his goal, fell down the steep ladder and fell hard to the floor in the hall below, where he eventually lost consciousness. When he woke up several hours later he found himself in his own bed, unaware how he got there. On the bench at the foot of his bed he found the cape and the hat from the trunk together with the diary.

Although he was prepared for the apparition when he touched the cloak this time, he let out a silent scream when the ghosts actually appeared again. The two aethereal men hovered in the air in front of Carter and stared at him with glowing eyes. When asked who they were, they replied that they were his grandfather and his great-grandfather, and that their spirits were condemned to restlessness by their failure to complete their respective missions. But if they could help their descendant – Carter Farwell – to fulfill his own destiny, there would be hope of salvation for them.

Inspired by the heroic acts of his ancestors Bruce Carter and Bruce Carter III, and with the tutoring of their ghosts, the young Connecticuter high school history teacher Carter Farewell picked up the haunted cloak of his grandfathers and accepted the challenge to use his heritage to become the new Fighting Yank and to serve his country his own way.

Worked into his own mordernized costume the cloak grants Carter superhuman strength and invulnerability, along with the ability to channel the spirits of his ancestors into himself, thus becoming even more stronger, faster, and almost immortal.

  2. Original:

    Next Gen:
    http://fc04.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/224/8/c/chief_skullface_and_his_gang_by_vectorman316-d6hvmym.png

Chief Skullface with Mikasi (meaning “Coyote”, L) and Opa (meaning “Owl”, R) after a successful robbery.

My version of the Chief has dropped the “insulting broken English” bit of his character. Now he only speaks in Native American dialect, and when he speaks English, he speaks in riddles.
Also, instead of having random henchmen, Chief Skullface has a large gang called “The Taiomah”, meaning “The Bear Whose Voice Makes The Rocks Tremble.”
Stone Tomahawk has been replaced with a modern tomahawk

  3. Bryce Wasley

Hoping Blackmask’s name being nearly identical to Black Mask doesn’t disqualify him, but here he is:

    Original:

    New:
    http://www.heromachine.com/wp-content/legacy/forum-image-uploads/bryce-wasley/2013/08/Blackmask.jpg

Stephen Doone is one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the city thanks to his earnings in both his newspaper empire and his criminal syndicate, run by his other alias. Blackmask’s influence touches all corners, including the police force, which is filled with enough dirty cops that they look the other way at his operations, or, more often than not, join in the crime spree. Any and all opposition to him end up on the front page of his latest print, including reporters, investigators, good cops, and vigilantes. He owns the city and has no intention of letting it think or act for itself.

  4. Just finished for one of my next teams:

    Original:

    http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Johnny_Canuck

    Next Generation:

    http://www.madjack.de/comics/contests/MadJack-JohnnyCanuckII.png

    Story:

Before Johnny Canuck died on April 14, 1978 he had lived through some tough years. After the Second World War, in which Canada’s first super hero had fought gloriously from 1942 onwards and even three times had the opportunity to knock out Hitler personally with a sock on his jaw, he fell into oblivion and had to muddle through in the 50s and the 60s with all sorts of odd jobs realising that if he was remembered at all than mostly because of his patriotic name than anything else.

Fortunately, Johnny managed to turn his life for the better when he met Trixie Rogers, the former heroine Wing, in 1966 at a heroes reunion picnic. With her help he got a job as a machinist at the GM Number 2 plant, making $22 an hour. Johnny and Trixie eventually married in May, 1967 and started a family.

His son James Canuck was 10 years old, when Johnny died of a heart attack in his 1977 Buick Le Sabre station wagon parked outside the Canadian Tire at Grantham Plaza, but it was James’s own son who recently followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and called his exploits in mind by his own actions as the superhero Johnny Canuck II.

The young electronics engineer had invented a technological network and wove it into a costume that enhances all of the wearers bodily functions to the peak of human potential and even briefly beyond on maximum level, although this can cause a overload and hence short circuit of the suit.

Thanks to his power suit Johnny Canuck (II) can lift up to 501 kg (1,200 lbs), run a mile (1.6 km) in 73 seconds (49 mph/78 kph), exert himself at peak capacity for a hour without any rest, and able to leap 50 yards out in a single bound and 20 ft into the air without a running start.

His reaction speed is 20 kph, which makes it possible for him to dodge gunfire even in point blank range and he is durable enough to the point that he can on a car from 6,000cm (200 feet) with no discomfort.

However, the charge of his suit is limited to 24 hours, leaving Johnny without any powers whatsoever when it runs out of energy.

  5. This is Kendra Wood nee Mason daughter of Earl Mason and granddaughter of Louise Grant Mason. She now goes by “Platinum Blonde.” The Mason’s would not let Kendra fight crime until Louise thought she was trained enough, and Earl would not let her
fight crime until he felt the universe gave them a sign… Enter “Phan~Tom” the ghost cat who keeps leading Kendra into crime scenes!

  6. The Atom Wizard: (I) and (II)

    Next Generation: Atom Wizard (III)

  7. I now give you Flame Girl:
    Original Wiki Page
    Next Generation
I got the idea that maybe the new Flame Girl would be a daredevil motorcyclist (carrying over the Ring of Fire gimmick from the original), and so made her boots and gloves more streamlined and extended the blue piping through the upper body, making her costume double as a motocross racing suit. Having her mask on under the helmet also kind of gives her that “glasses-no-glasses, Clark Kent-Superman” secret identity thing that persists even though it makes no sense.

  8. I wanted to submit a Scarecrow entry for last week’s Public Domain contest but inspiration didn’t come in time. He’s on the list again this week, so I thought I’d enter him.
    Original: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Scarecrow_(Oz)
    Next Generation: Kor-Sekra’a

For those of you following what I’m officially calling my “Gale Force” series of images and serialized back stories, Kor-Sekra’a is an alien with the ability to communicate with the earth and plant life, and is responsible for bringing the Twim (a.k.a. TWM units) and their green control suits to Oz, as well as creating the wormhole technology that would keep bringing Dorothy Gale to Oz. Some time in the past three hundred years (his race can live for millennia at a time, given a steady supply of incinerated carbon to feed on once a month), Kor-Sekra’a buried all the technology he had given to the people of Oz, including his Brain, the central computer responsible for maintaining and regulating the TWM units, portable tornado machines, and other Phytopath technology in use around Oz. Continue reading here for his full story and an early history of Oz.

  9. Here’s one from my Clockwork project I thought would make a good submission for Icarus:
    Original: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Icarus
    Next Generation: Lady Icarus

You can probably tell by the three eyes, the number 3 on her shoulder, and the way her arms are pointing that Lady Icarus is my representation of Three O’Clock. And yes, she’s a three-eyed ballerina in a pink unitard, but who cares?

  10. Here’s my take on a new Lenore Black:
    Original: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Leonore_Black
    Next Generation: Lena Black

Lena Black is the daughter of Lenore Black, who had the power to spin webs from her fingers and transform into a giant spider. Unlike her mother, Lena was born in a state halfway between woman and spider, and has yet to figure a way to transform one way or the other. She survives mostly by keeping to the shadows and feeding on small rodents throughout the city. Her six eyes give her a second sight that lets her see the true nature of people (those of a corrupt nature are usually normal thieves and murderers, but Lena has squared off against her share of demons, werewolves, vampires, etc. in her search for an end to what she believes is a family curse extending back to Ancient Greece). At night, she goes about the city hunting corrupt souls, wearing a belt fashioned from the skulls of her victims as a ward against supernatural evil.

Note: it’s time to play “Spot the Poe Reference!”

  12. So i proudly show everyone the reincarnation of the original Miss Masque. Takahime Adams is the great granddaughter of Diana Adams the original Miss Masque. She like her grandmother also heavent got any superpower only the technology and her skills. Like the original Miss Masque she also use pistols which are materialize in her hand. She use the name for tribute.

(Sorry for my bad english i not usually made any superhero or villain and neither do any story, my policy is to my pictures speak about the characters not a story.)

    Köszke.

  13. Sorry forgot the original here is the link.

    sorry for the doublepost.

  14. Boy King and Giant is one of the goofier-looking Golden Age teams (anyone else think Boy King looks like a girl?), so I acted on my opinion of the Original:
and combined Boy King and Giant into one female character for the Next Generation: The Golem Queen.

Regina Grant was an archaeologist hired by Eldritch Thule, a German historian, to locate a legendary Biblical artifact known to some as the Spear of Destiny. When Thule supplied her with an archaeological team of his choosing and insisted on accompanying Regina on her expedition, she grew suspicious. But as this was potentially a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, she reluctantly agreed to his terms and they began excavating for the Spear.
Regina was lucky enough to find the Spear of Destiny first, but Thule was close at hand, grabbing the Spear at the same instant as Regina, and the two were locked in a tug of war which she was somehow able to win. She could feel a strange power surging into her body from the artifact in her hands, and brandished the Spear at Thule and anyone else who tried to advance on her.
Thule revealed himself to be Heinrich Himmler, the presumably deceased former head of Adolf Hitler’s S.S. squad, and current leader of the ancient Thule Society, of which his team of archaeologists were all members.
He ordered his men to kill Regina Grant and take the Spear by force, and as they drew their guns, Regina closed her eyes and wished she could survive this terrible situation. The Spear of Destiny glowed and the sounds of gunfire were followed almost immediately by gasps of bewilderment as lead ricocheted off of stone.
With a prayer, Regina Grant had become the Golem Queen, a royal figure with skin as resilient as stone and the strength of ten men.
Himmler and his Thule Society fled in fear but they would return time and again until either she or they were no longer living.
As Regina became more skilled with the Spear of Destiny (which could be stored or retrieved from a pocket dimension by uttering the word “Longinus”), she discovered it also gave her the power of flight and could be used to conjure golems from any rocky surface nearby. The Golem Queen currently lives in seclusion somewhere in the Swiss Alps, developing her powers which she mostly uses to rescue people from avalanches without thus far alerting them to her presence.
However, repeated sightings of the Golem Queen’s stone “subjects” have caused word to spread of mythical rock creatures roaming the countryside, so it is only a matter of time before the Thule Society rears its ugly head once more. And when they do, the Golem Queen will be ready for them.

  15. I forgot to include the link for the original pdsh wiki, so here it is again:

  17. A couple weeks ago, Sgt. George Howe had never heard of Alias the Dragon. That changed after Baron Frost attacked the base Howe was stationed at. While the other soldiers occupied themselves with evacuating civilians, George reasoned (correctly) that a flamethrower would adequately subdue the ice powered super villain. News reports covering his subsequent capture of Frost likened George to the now obscure hero of the ’40s. Realizing America had numerous enemies already on our soil, Sgt. Howe took up the flamethrower to fight the good fight as Alias: The Dragon.

  21. Nyctalope revived. Same night vision, more cybernetic augmentation. Pose by ams.

    The Original Character

  22. Toni Stark revived (and a gag recycled). Time-travelling heroine finds herself in the year 2013 AD.

    The Original Character

  23. Gotta cram this guy in!
I noticed there were three characters on the list that looked almost exactly like Captain America, so I came up with the Three-Star General.
    The originals are
    Major Triumph: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Major_Triumph
    Rusty Ryan: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Rusty_Ryan
    TV Captain America: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Captain_America

    And here’s Three-Star General: http://i1331.photobucket.com/albums/w597/SeanWilkinson84/Re-makes/Timedrop23-Three-StarGeneral_zps4365fa44.png

Bob Buchanan was a drone pilot stationed in Afghanistan. Between tours of duty he pursued a degree in Information Technology and tinkered with his remote controlled hologram generator and portable communications system. He would return to duty as the Three-Star General, a patriotic hero who could project two solid holograms of himself that he could control via a dual Bluetooth headset. He also carries a wrist-mounted mini-drone which he can pilot with a portable VR control rig built into his costume (used mainly for long-distance recon and sniper missions).

  24. The Original- http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Will_O%27_The_Wisp

The Update:Grace Donnell is the daughter of Gale Leary, the original Will O’The Wisp. She wears a belt and bracers inlaid with the wood from the branch her mother carried which grants her a protective, glowing aura and telekinesis that she uses against evildoers.
