Character Design Challenge 97 results

We got some kick-ass entries for our last Character Design Challenge, which tasked you with coming up with heroes (or villains) whose costumes were made up of everyday clothing items instead of spandex and capes. Without further ado, here are some of my personal favorites:

If you have some that you thought were great but I didn’t include, by all means let me know in the comments. All this is just one guy’s opinion, after all!

Picking just one as my overall personal favorite is tough. I find myself going back and forth between DiCicatriz’ “Rift”, Kaldath’s “Arson”, Marquis Samedi’s “Glacier”, Moognation’s “Farm Girl”, NHA247’s “Flashback”, and Watson Bradshaw’s “Angel Ann Dawson”.

They’re all awesome. I’m basically closing my eyes and choosing … Marquis Samedi:

Man, that was a total toss-up, though, for me.

Let me know in the comments what you think of the entries, which ones you’d have chosen (even if I didn’t pick them at all), and general thoughts about the contest. Thanks to everyone who participated!

  1. Congratulations!

  2. Thanks for including my piece in your favorites for the first (and hopefully not last) time. Great job to everyone else!

  3. Congrats to winner and favorites. Among them, I tend to single out Watson: backgrounds of unusual detail and sensibility. Pipes enter ungrouted cracks in walls, charging icons for recording viewers, etc.

I think if team pix ever become a contest, it’ll be Watson with background, Iscarioto with a conglomeration character doing something surprising in the foreground, and Harlequin ”putting animation” on a t.v. set somewhere in the scene.

  4. Watson Bradshaw

Thanks for the high praise Herr D, and congrats to Marquis Samedi, this was a challenging contest but still a whole lot of fun to see what people came up with.

  5. Congrats to Marquis Samedi and special shout out to DiCicatriz, Moognation, SkyBandit and Kytana!

    Great pics everyone! Cheers!

  6. Thanks for the shout out! I really enjoyed this contest, it pushed me to make some cool images of some characters I like a lot. I think I’m going to keep going in this vein with the others…

Great pictures everybody! AMS: I feel like Priest would make a fantastic sidekick for Battle Pope.

Also this contest made me nostalgic for Heroes the TV show. I know it got really terribad towards the end… but I mean… it was so good when it started… and… it could’ve turned around. Right? Don’t you think so?

  7. Congrats to everyone who managed to pull something with this rather limiting, IMHO, premise. Good job I could have never done.

    Woot I made the page!

    Congrats to Marquis Samedi!

  9. Honestly , these are ridiculous and depressing except one (not mine ether) is this one http://www.heromachine.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/DeliriousAL_Rewind-1.png

  10. Congrats, Marquis Samedi!

So many favorites to list. I’m not going to flood the blog with what I like about all of them. If anyone wants feedback on his/her entry, send me a PM from the HeroMachine Forums.

    Some standouts (no particular order):

    AvalancheMaster’s Bronsky
    Cavalry_Red’s Xander’s Window
    DeliriousAL’s Moonlight
    DiCicatriz’ Wraith
    djuby’s Night School
    Harlequin’s The Biggest Fear
    maniacmick’s 13
    Meniukas’ Nightwatch
    Moognation’s Farm Girl
    SkyBandit’s Kung Fu Cowboy
    StarfighterAce421’s Black Rose

  11. I was going to post several, but we got hit by a tornado storm and was out of power ince Sunday at 6PM, had to get a hotel just to sleep where it wasn’t too hot.
I really liked the entires though.
Congrats everyone adn to Marquis Samedi.

I hope to enter a contest again soon.

Congratulations to all entrants. I never cease to be amazed by the creativity and resourcefulness of the HMachinist community.
Hey Jeff, I just had an idea for a Character Challenge. I was just at Heromachine Classic, for nostalgia, and what if the challenge was to take a character created with the random function on HM Classic and try to, well, fix it using HM3? Then we’d each post the original and our remake together for everyone’s viewing pleasure. We’d have to be on the honor system to make it honestly random, or it could be the same randomized character for all entrants. Just a thought.

Upon further thought and checking, it could be done on 2.5 as well or better, and I think it’d be fine to click the Random All button as many times as desired until you got a character you thought you could work with. We’d just be honor-bound not to alter it.
    Okay, I’ll back off now.

  14. Marquis Samedi

Oh, cool, thanks everyone. One entry that I thought was particularly good but didn’t make it in was NHA247’s, it’s got a lot of character:

  15. I was bopping around 4chan when I got an idea for a contest. How about “70s style Album Covers”, from the era of really trippy album covers?

I’m just glad mine’s on the page!
    Congratulations to everyone!
