Your Character Design Challenge this week is to create the most awesome character illustration possible showing your interpretation of an alchemist! In actual history, alchemists were Medieval proto-chemists who undertook the trasmutation of one element into another, typified by the quest to turn lead into gold.
In fantasy fiction terms, alchemists are basically wizards who accomplish their magic by brewing potions and tinctures.
The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:
- All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
- Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
- Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.
- All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

Well, in the world I’ve been working on, the use of alchemy mutates the user, with the most common result of becoming a human-animal hybrid. Alchemy was banned and alchemists forced into hiding after an alchemist used blood to create powerful and plentiful beings of blood and nearly took over the known world. However, even though the use of alchemy and the knowledge of how was lost, some of the alchemists had been mutated to live forever, or at least, close to forever, and had survived. Public Service Announcement
Remember to name your FILE with your user name as part of the name. The key word is FILE. Not link, not folder, not album. FILE. If you right click your image and save it to your hard drive and it doesn’t contain your user name than it hasn’t been named correctly. Your image will be disqualified if this is the case.
Example of Correct Naming: dblade_MostAwesomeAlchemist.png
Examples of InCorrect Naming: MostAwesomeAlchemist.png, fxxs1120004d12334.jpg, hm3-beta.png, contest.jpg

Great! You’re still not naming your file correctly, though. Before you upload it, add your name to the name of the file, so the name of the file is Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png.
Before you upload it, look at it on your hard drive. You should see it listed as Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png no matter where you put it.
While you’re uploading it, look at the info box and see if the name of the file is Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png.
Once it’s done uploading, click on it and look at the address bar in your browser. Find the last slash in the address. The part after that ought to be Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png. Ignore everything before the last slash.
After you upload it, try downloading it to your desktop from PhotoBucket. Look at the file once it’s downloaded and make sure it is still named Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png.
Let me repeat and put it in bold since this doesn’t seem to be getting through to an alarming number of people:
Before you upload your entry to PhotoBucket or anywhere else, look at it on your computer. It should have YOUR NAME on it, AND the CHARACTER’S NAME on it, BEFORE YOU UPLOAD IT ANYWHERE.
If anyone does not know how to rename files on their hard drive, see this article for Windows or or this one for the Mac.
Again, the name of the file on your hard drive before you upload it should be (in this case) Sebastian978-Cauldron-man2.png. Ignore PhotoBucket. Just look at it on your hard drive and only look at the name of the file.
I’m a grumpy old man and I like my stuff to be right because I’m too mentally fatigued to fix it. Or you can just think of me as a big fat jerk, which is also true. Either way, to paraphrase the great chef from “My Drunk Kitchen“, “Name yo’ shit.”
Drago/Seb. Whichever name you prefer to use, please please heed the advice given not only in the rules at the top of the post, but also in basically every second post within the post which you are posting in.

It’s not Sebastian978 its Sebastian_978 so it is named right. The _ is part of the name.
So, are you telling me the – has to in between my name and the name of the character instead of / between the names?
The underscore is irrelevant, as that’s in the FOLDER NAME and not in the FILE NAME. Your folder could be named JIGGERYDO and it wouldn’t matter as I WILL NEVER SEE THAT.
Re-read what I wrote, especially the part about downloading it and then looking at the name of the file. Or the part about only looking at the part after the LAST slash. Or the part about looking at it on your hard drive instead of on PhotoBucket. Or every other word in that comment or the half dozen other comments on exactly the same subject by four other people.
It’s like you’re putting a check in an envelope and signing the envelope instead of the check. The bank doesn’t care that your signature used to be on the envelope because they throw that away when they take your check out. Then all they’re left with is an unsigned check, which doesn’t do them any good.
I’m done explaining it. If you can’t figure this out then I’ll be in the position of the bank come judging time, holding an unsigned check that’s completely useless to me.
The / is not part of the file name. That indicates different folders or directories on the server. Anything before the slash will never appear as the name of the file. Pretend it doesn’t exist. Ignore everything BEFORE the last slash.
When you look at it on your hard drive BEFORE YOU UPLOAD IT the file name needs to be Sebastian_978-CharacterName.png. BEFORE YOU UPLOAD IT. You’re getting confused by the full address with all the slashes and the directories. Just focus on making sure it’s right BEFORE YOU UPLOAD IT.

In two picture in one post or to entry? You make a lot of entry if you want. But my personnal advice only one picture in one post. But no restricted entry number.
You can make as many posts as you like. Some people prefer to do one entry per comment, others would rather wait and put all their entries into one comment. It doesn’t matter to me one way or the other, whatever you want is fine.
The ultimate goal in alchemy was not the transmutation of base metals, but the transmutation of the soul. The final stage of the Magnum Opus was the fusion of elements, male and female, spirit and matter.

This is a guy from a parallel fantasy world where instead of magic and science, there is a blend of the two (alchemy). In this world there are two kinds of alchemists: the good kind (who work with transmuting elements and so forth), and the outlaw alchemists (who break the cardinal rule of alchemy by creating artificial life known as homunculi or golems). Delirious: If you’ve got firefox or Chrome, right-clik on your picture, and do the “display the picture” thing. You should have only the picture on screen.
Copy the link in the toolbar, and paste it here.
BUT make sure that your name appears in the filename, or you won’t be able to compete!

John was just another Alchemist work for Big Science, Inc. The company was known for it’s ambitious projects and John thought himself lucky when he got appointed the head of their biggest research project – turning lead into gold.
Six months later, he didn’t think himself lucky any more. He had yet to make any progress and was facing a demotion at best and being dismissed at worst. While working on his latest formula, the beaker exploded in his hand.
‘Success!’ He thought, watching the piece of lead on the table become gold. His excitement was cut short when he noticed his arms start to change. Looking down, he was terrified to discover he was turning into what appeared to be lead. Realizing the formula must work both ways, he cursed himself for not removing his watch and wedding band as his skin fell away. It was then he noticed the feeling in his mouth and was horrified when he deducted some of the solution must have gotten into his mouth and affected his gold filling.
The next morning his coworkers found a bar of gold on the table and a puddle that looked like liquified skin.

I Love FMA and anime in general (YAY ANIME FANS!!!) My entry the Hunter Alchemist was actually inspired by Edward Elric.

This is Alverus. By day he’s a simple alchemist, mixing potions and creating elixirs. By night he’s a sorcerer and necromancer, practicing the dark arts. He owns a small apothecary hidden in the forest where he conducts his dangerous experiments. Currently he is devloping a resurrection elixir, used to bring the dead back to life.

this alchemist is equipped for gathering some ingredients on location. his equipment has been conceived so he can collect hose ingredients, put them on a bowl, take one flask on his left hand, pour a few drops on the bowl to see if it’s the right thing ( with its reaction, said reaction he can easily see or smell), put back the flask and put the ingredient on a pocket, all that with one hand. this can be usefull when you only have one hand available, like when you’re hanging on a cliff.

Though he never converted lead into gold or found the Elixir of Life, he did manage to convert haggis into something edible, once, and found the Elixir of No Indigestion For About Two Weeks. Mostly he was adept at converting the gullible into cash. He died in a Pomeranian prison, maintaining `til the end that the pope was from Neptune.
