Pop Quiz: Melee Weapon Winner

Many thanks to everyone who entered the last Pop Quiz, which asked you to make an awesome melee weapon! We had some great submissions, and I wanted you to have the chance to see them all for yourself. So without further ado, here they are:

I think all of these have something special to recommend them, which made choosing a winner tough. But four in particular stood out to me for not only being neat looking weapons, but for suggesting that there was some sort of special story to them as well. Those four were Myro's "Doomhammer X9", dblade's "Hellreaver", Gene's "The Feeder", and Marquis Samedi's "Gauntlet".

After much dithering, I have decided to award the overall winning prize to ... Myro!

I like the clean simplicity of it that becomes increasingly complex the more you look at it. The glows are cool, too, and I like the way it presents against the black background. Plus I can see how someone would actually wield it in battle, always a bonus.

Great job, everyone!

Pretty sweet, Myro! Excellent design. I can see a space marine pounding some bugs with that one.

  2. TOOL says:

Congrats Myro, and good job to everyone else as well!

  3. Joel says:

    great job all

  4. Myro says:

Thanks! I knew I wanted to do a high-tech war hammer when I saw the contest, but the actual hammer heads in blunt don’t look techy enough. It was a bit of inspiration that I thought to start looking in headgear.

Anyway, Jeff, I know the thumbs-up hand is on the list of replacement prizes, but it’s a little further down, and no one (to my knowledge) has claimed it. I’d like to take that as my prize, given that there are a few creations I’ve done that I wish I had that asset.

  5. Jeff Hebert says:

    Thumbs-up hand, you got it!

  6. Herr D says:

Myro? you DESERVE a thumbs-up. that is cool. does it exude EMP? weapon swung at Autobot?

  7. headlessgeneral says:

That is an awesome hammer, Myro. Congrats!

  8. Great takes, and I enjoy them all. Definilely, Marquis Disamedi’s “gauntlet.”

  9. Jeff Hebert says:

So who has ideas for next time?

  10. LoneWolf6155 says:

How about a noir themed contest?

  11. Jeff, how about a “character intro?” You created this site for character designs, and I definitely appreciate that. But, instead of a design, maybe a sentence or two for a character concept? Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the designs, the thought, the care, and the effort that everyone brings.

But… I have to say, without naming names, there are some artists and masters at this (arkabarkat, yrmo, msa, Pzy, kOrkapap, minesuka, et al). It can be intimidating (but please post, don’t feel intimidated). Okay, I’m blabbing… what I’m getting at is a twist or just a side.

We’ve tried this with story-telling and stuff, but that was trying to layer thoughts like so much pudding pops. I’d like to see a few more “random” ideas, just to vent. It’s great that we can put characters to form. A story or two, for those of us who for whatever reason can’t put our words to pictures.

  12. Marquis Samedi says:

Congrats, Myro. And ams was asking how I made the gauntlet, it’s just a mech leg and a claw glove properly masked to background shapes.

    Contest ideas:
    -mad scientist
    -redesign a public domain character
-agent of a law enforcement agency (like S.H.I.E.L.D.)
    -mastermind & a minion
    -national superhero
-golden age pulp hero / villain
    -wacky silver age
-exxxtreme 90’s (don’t actually pick this one)
-modernized mythological figure / urban fantasy
    -living superweapon
-superhero/villain changing from their secret identity
    -Wonder Woman analogue
    -alt-history character

  13. Marquis Samedi says:

Or, here’s a more technical idea. Select one or more heromachine items, the winner is the one who can incorporate them into their entry in the most creative way.

How about making a super hero duo with back story. Main character and a side kick?

  22. TOOL: How about making a super hero duo with back story. Main character and a side kick?

I was thinking something like that. Maybe pair up a couple of HM’ers. Each designs a main character then the other designs the sidekick. For example, if we were paired, I would design the hero, then you design my hero’s sidekick. And, you design the hero, and I design your hero’s sidekick.

That could almost be a Friday Night Fight. Or, another FNF would be design a superhero “family.”

  23. kyle says:

    Congrats

  24. TOOL says:

@The Atomic Punk, or even maybe a contest where we have to make up our own teen/child character that would be a part of a team like the new avangers or young justice. I like your idea too. Pairing creators in a random manner to make the hero and side kicks for a contest.
