SOD.174 – Four pilots

This is a bit of a cheat, but these are the four pilots I drew today for the fledgling "Mech Edition" HM version. Most of these are basically traces of client-provided computer characters, but the thing I've been working on is inking, and since I was pleased with the way they turned out AND I drew them today, I think they sort of qualify as a SOD.

They all look good, but I think your use of black in the top left and bottom right characters gives them more depth than the other two. The older guy in particular feels a bit too flat.

so the Mech HM will have pre-made pilots and the focus will be on designing the Mech itself? That makes sense, actually. I’m looking forward to seeing it when it’s released.

  3. Jeff Hebert says:

Good comment Worf, I think you’re right. Those are two of the client-derived characters, but let me see if I can juice up the lineart some.

Tigerguy, that’s correct, the focus is very much on making the mech. The pilots are all pre-generated and you can only change their hair color and skin color.

Hey all you mecha-fans out there, are they pilots or drivers? I called them drivers in the app at this point but now that I am looking back on it, I think that’s probably wrong.

    And they’re definitely pilots

I prefer the term Pilot. I blame my massive Anime/Manga consumption.

Well, if one consults a dictionary (and I did; Merriam-Webster Online) one finds ‘pilot’ is reserved for air- or watercraft, while ‘driver’ refers to the operator of a motor vehicle. It doesn’t specifically say land-based motor vehicle, but I think the inference is clear. Neither Merriam nor Webster have ever been renowned for their explication of mech nomenclature.
On the other hand, it’s not much of a step to rationalize that a driver moves a vehicle along a predetermined route, e.g., a road, while a pilot navigates his vehicle at will and as necessary.
I have no personal preference. I just like to muddy the waters.
Whatever the final verdict, I think maybe they should be scalable from exo-suit pilot size way down to relatively-little-driver-inside-the-giant-mech-head size.

Wrong, but related, topic, but I had a thought on an earlier question of yours on ideas for this project. A good american attempt at anime that featured some decent mech’s was Exo-Squad. has the entire series, I believe.

I don’t care if they’re pilots or drivers, but I’d so love to see some more things akin to flight suits, and their peripherals in HM3.

    Pretty please!

I have a idea for a new character addition for the mecha pilots; a chain-smoking grizzled and scarred man with a big pair of googles on his forehead and a badass pistol. His appearance is roughly similiar to the guy on the bottom left, but with 10 years added to his appearance.

I’d like to request a male and female battlemech pilot with a neurohelm and cooling vest. I can email you images if you’d like.

The reason I ask is because this will be the holy grail to Battletech players.

  13. Jeff Hebert says:

PsyckoSama, a reference link would be great.

  14. Pilots.

Funny thing about Battletech / Mechwarrior and cooling vests. All the guys would play female characters for the skimpy outfits. Our two female players would play male characters for the same reason.

  15. PsyckoSama says:

those aren’t quite the best images, atomic.

I’m going to post a request thread on the offical BTech forum.

And lost between a mountain of random image spam.

Well, the 12 I posted are all Mechwarriors.

I saw ’em, thanks Psycko πŸ™‚
