It was hard enough for Amos growing up a black kid in America in the 60’s and 70’s. When he hit puberty and suddenly a pair of black wings began growing from his back, matters only worsened. But as the child of two peace-loving civil rights activists, Amos didn’t let the oppression and hatred affect him. Instead, he used his difference for the betterment of mankind, flying in to the rescue of innocent victims as the hero Black Bat. In the early 1980’s, Amos aided the supergroup Hero Corps in defeating immortal villain Unsterblich, and it was then that he met and fell in love with the heroine Deadeye. Not long after, the two were married, and Amos joined the ranks of Hero Corps. He and Deadeye became the parents of a boy, who would gain his mother’s remarkable aim and grow to become the hero Caliber. But differences between the mild-tempered Amos and the his aggressive wife caused the two to split in 1994, and Amos quit hero Corps to strike out on his own. He has been flying solo, so to speak, ever since.
