Brian was once a career drug tester. He would sign up for paid medication trials and barely scrape by on the payments he would get. But one of those drugs would forever change his life. It was called Apexia, manufactured by mega corporation Varner-Poole Pharmaceuticals, and its intent was to give its user slightly higher-than-human superpowers. Testing on animals had yielded desired results, and Brian was the first human to be administered the drug. He was soon transformed into the super-powered mascot Apex, and spent most of his subsequent time doing commercials and making public appearances to pique public interest in Apexia.
But it was soon discovered that none of the people who had purchased the drug exhibited any observable effects from it. Both Brian and Varner-Poole were accused of fraudulent advertising. It was alleged that brad had already been superhuman, but had only pretended to become so thanks to Apexia. In truth, Brian had been completely honest about his transformation. What he didn’t know was that he possessed a unique gene in his DNA necessary to make Apexia work correctly. This gene was so rare that only about .01% of the world’s population possessed it. It was simply incredible coincidence that he had happened to be the test subject. This was discovered by a geneticist several years after Brian had declared bankruptcy in disgrace, and he knew the public would never fully trust him again, but Brian was able to pull himself up from a depressed, alcoholic stupor and become an actual hero, using his physical might to protect those who needed protection.
