It looks like you’ve done well here for a start. If you make each crowd companion a different 3-color uniform gray, shrink the x more than the y, add depth to the heads (same color insignia and some hair?) — then all you need are seats between them. Shields?

AFTER that I can be of more help. If you post your text in your thread and PM me when you’re done, I’ll add some translucent layers between foreground and background and see if I can manage a spotlight for you. I’m good at translucent separation, and it’s one of the few things I do that I couldn’t possibly explain.
