Jack was a panhandler on the streets of Caligo until he saw a flyer offering to pay ordinary people to be part of a psychological experiment. The experiemnt was known as the Phoenix Project and was conducted by a research company called Sphinx Foundation. Little did Jack know, the experiment was actually physical, and his DNA was tampered with until, when he awoke, he had been given the amazing powers of levitation, super strength, and the ability to heat up his hands hot enough to melt steel. Completely freaked at his new state of being, Jack escaped the Sphinx Foundation building after wandering around confused and terrified. Once he had calmed down and gained some control over his powers, he finally answered the call to fight the injustices of the world. At the same time, he took it upon himself to better his life by getting and keeping a job at a department store at Centertown Mall.
