Character Design Challenge ♯152- Going Greyscale

Ok guys, for this weeks challenge I'm taking away your ability to use colour. Your entire picture must be done in greyscale. Think early 20th century photography and you get the idea. You can create anything you feel like, provided your picture has a background, and the only colour used is white, black or grey. Sounds simple enough right. Just make sure it's not flat or boring, which is the problem you're going to face working in greyscale.

As per usual, no limits on the number of entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

What about using shading, kind of like Sin City (movie)?

  2. JR19759 says:

@hawk007- I never said you couldn’t use shading, just that you can’t use colour.

My entry this week is Gigaman.

In the comic book multiverse I created, there are countless alternate Earths. Gigaman is from the Shounen Nexus, a parallel universe where Japan replaced Rome as the great Empire of the Classical Ages. As a result, the world’s culture became essentially Japanese-like.

In this world, Gigaman was a Tokusatsu hero with an armor from planet Gigas that gave him the power to grow 50-feet-tall, but he fell into a dimensional warp and ended up trapped in Nexus-1 (AKA “Earth-Prime”) and started fighting alongside ocidental heroes.

Just like Nexus-1 is a superhero comic book universe, Shounen Nexus is a manga world. For that reason, everything there is black and white.

    Classic Man.

My entry is called “Classic Man” it as an old fashioned photograph of a man with style and class.

  5. Brons says:

Here’s a B&W rendering of one of the very first comicbook/pulp characters I ever created (a little over a half century ago). He was designed as a dark pulp hero of the sort of The Shadow or the Green Hornet, and was known by different names during different periods of his career: The Black Mask, Mr. E and Mystery. As “Mr. E, he pretended to be a crimelord, but was actually a crimefighter. As Mystery he was a mysterious, even supernatural presence. His gal friday, one Miss Terry took on the Mystery persona occasionally, when he could not.

He’s shown here in his Black Mask persona, a hard bitten detective, who frequently fought occult threats.

I created him in my early teens before I knew much about the pulps or the comics of the 30s, and hadn’t heard about Dr. Occult and Rose, or either of the Mr. E’s, especially the one who was assisted by Miss Terry. My Mr E. and Terry were more like Dr. Occult and Rose, than either of his namesakes. I did know about the Black Mask pulp magazine, though.

Anyway, here he is in grey-scale.

My entry is titled “Frontier Sunset”. I actually really liked the challenge of all greyscale. http://i111.photobucket.com/albums/n146/tsl129/gi.png

  7. JR19759 says:

@superfly30- Could you export your pieces in a larger size please. I don’t exactly know what is going on but yours always seem to be much much smaller than everyone else’s and it makes it very hard to see the details and, as such, very hard for me to judge them properly.

  8. Tango says:

“Fly for Love” – A ninja is inspired to take a leap of faith as he pursues his foe.

  9. superfly30 says:

@jr19759- Ya I’ve noticed that. I will try to (I dont claim to be a tech wizard lol)

  10. superfly30 says:

Regardless of what size I export my picture with and post it to photobucket it comes out small. I dont know what is happening here.

  11. superfly30 says:

I figure out why it is posting so small to photobucket so I used Imgur instead this time and it seems alot better. Here is “Frontier Sunset” in a larger form @jr19759

    @Superfly30- That’s much better.

Didn’t get to do this one justice, but I’m off to catch up two week’s work in eleven hours. Wish me luck with my non-art overload?

Ideas sometimes have more stamina and power than expected!

Two entries for me this week. I hope it’s alright that each one is also a subtle tribute/homage (if that doesn’t work for the contest, feel free to enjoy them anyway).

    1. Wizard
A modern day wizard; they say he came from the stars, but no one knows for sure. Some say he came from Mars, but we all know only spiders live there.

    2. General
A good general always has an ace up his sleeve. He knows this game inside out and for that, they call him the Kill Master.
