Character Design Contest ♯96- Mad Scientists & Monsters

So, time for the annual Halloween contest and this year, instead of just asking you to design a monster, I thought I'd give y'all the opportunity to be a bit more creative. What I want from you is a duo in the vein of Frankenstien and his eponymous monster, a creature and its creator. The creature can be undead, mechanical or inhuman (e.g. werewolf, swamp creature) but you must include both characters in the same image, much like last weeks contest. However, unlike last weeks contest, no external editing, both characters must be done in the same export from heromachine.

Also, stay tuned for next weeks contest. It's going to be a VERY good one. 🙂

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: http://www.heromachine.com/forum/the-heromachine-art-gallery/dblades-whiz-bang-item-dispenser/. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post pictures and images that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

No problem. In just seven days, I can make you a man.

Don’t forget to take care of the tell tale Adams apple.

  3. Mad Jack says:

@ Lime: But before that let’s do the time warp again… 😉

@JR: Am I limited to “just” one monster in the same picture as the creator or can there be more?! 😀

  4. JR19759 says:

@MadJack- I think I’ll leave that up to you. How many do you think you can do in one export?

    -(Préviously PhasR)-

Im sitting here having a hard time wording this question… ummm… well…
Does it have to be a mad scientist, JR, or can it be something like… ohhhh… a voodoo lady conjuring shadow creatures, or a witch making flying monkeys? Something along those lines?

Gwarb. I had a bunch of mad scientists but none with monsters. I guess I could edit them in but it’d be a bit gratuitous. Heromachine would slow down too much if I put detail into both.

This is the closest I have. These are Alexander & Amalda Sondheim. They’re from a short story I wrote recently(Alexander having appeared in a bunch of stuff myself and a friend do) so I thought it’d be fun to render them. They’re Artificers, and took over their Grandparent’s toy shop where they built all kinds of fascinated and sometimes potentially fearsome toys and contraptions.

Here they are working on their creations. Amalda on an animatronic Teddy Bear(with the help of the Sphere of Impulsive Invention) and Alexander repairing part of one of his robot guards(he has quite a few enemies and dangerous Exes).

I wanted to create characters of Romani heritage because of how often they’re stereotyped as seductive sorcerers or brigands etc. instead playing into their history of being good with crafts, metalwork etc. I liked the idea of playing into a different fantasy/sci-fi archetype of creating weird and wonderful inventions instead.

    @ Roseweave
The way you did the bear in the second one is ingenious in its simplicity.

  9. JR19759 says:

@Nug- Sorry, I’m gonna say no to that one. I know in the brief I said a creature and its creator, but I would like to keep it within the range the contest title would suggest, otherwise I’ll get load of questions in the poll if a non-scientific based creature/ creator pairing shows up.

  10. Skybandit says:

@ Lime: That’s what SHE said!

  11. Mad Jack says:

@ JR: Looks like 4 “monsters” and 1 creator. 😉

The Evolver and his “Beast-Men” who just sprung him from his prison cell …

Thank you! Yeah it turned out pretty awesome.

Professor Hebert controls his creation, Drakkenstein.

  14. Sabrina says:

Distraught over the death of her long time boyfriend, Jessica felt herself drawn to her father’s laboratory as a source of comfort and removal from the world. His research involving the creation of life fascinated her. Over time, Jessica found herself wondering what would happen if she tried to return life to a body that had already lost it…

Needless to say, I think Jessica was hoping Derrick would come out a little more loving and a little less… bloodthirsty.

Moral of the story? Don’t mess with Daddy’s stuff.

  15. Skybandit says:

When Doctor Schroedinger said his cat was both dead and alive, he meant it was LITERALLY both dead AND alive!

  16. Skoul says:

I’ve gone down the path of Jekyll and Hyde, where the creator is also the monster. I give you ‘Inner Demons’

    I hope this qualifies.

  17. Skybandit says:

Doctor Bonzo and Professor Cortex are arguing about which one of them created the other one.

  18. Vampyrist says:

Here is Dr Alvin Mason and one of his “orcs”, X. X is a former superhero with intuitive aptitude which saved his mind from the transformation. He now hunts the one who turned him into a monster.

Ok guys, this contest is now closed. Sorry, I know it was meant to be closed earlier, I haven’t been feeling great this morning. The poll will be up shortly.
