Character Design Contest ♯79- Inspired By Music 2

Last year we did a challenge where I asked you to do a piece of art on Heromachine that was inspired by a piece of music of your choice. Now I enjoyed that contest so much, I've decided to do it again.

As with last time we did this contest, you can do any kind of art, character, background, abstract etc. for this contest. I will be judging on how well I feel the piece illustrates the music, not just by lyrical content (so you can do art for an instrumental) but also the feeling of the music. As such for you work to be eligible you must include a link to a youtube video or sound cloud page of the song your art is portraying (don't send download links). Don't worry about me not liking the song and judging your work down because of that, I'll be objective, and anyway, I'm pretty open in my music tastes.

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

  2. KSW says:

ok first time its my first time trying to do a pose so please go easy on me and i do not know how to shade so please here is the link its from gangnam style i think we all know what this is but just in case i tried the one in the last fottage

  3. JR19759 says:

Ok, maybe I didn’t make this clear, your piece don’t have to have anything to do with the content of any music video that may have gone with the song you chose, in fact I would highly discourage you doing that. I know this weeks concept is very abstract but it’s interpretation not imitation (if that makes any sense).

  4. Gargantua says:

here is a piece i made some time ago (well it is preaty dark but i don’t have a save to fix it so i puting what i got)
    and here is a music

i may make somethig now leter

  5. Stulte says:

    Rhapsody? Nice!

  6. Jadebrain says:

Here’s a picture I did a while back. Perhaps it’s not my best work, but what the heck?

It wasn’t so much inspired by a song so much as an ideal aesthetic that multiple songs were written to reach for, but none have perfectly achieved. As such, I’ll instead pair it with the song which, I think, comes closest to achieving this ideal.

(By the way, is the old image file naming protocol still in effect? I remember, for old contests, there was a certain way the file should be named, but I can’t remember what it was, and there’s no mention of it on the blog post.)

  7. livewyre1014 says:

I’m one of those weird people who actually hear a song or a set of lyrics and can branch off an entire story line from it…so this contest should be fun. Probably gonna try and do at least one more entry, but first up is pretty experimental for me, as I’ve never really tried to make a scene before. The song is “Unbreak my Heart” by Toni Braxton…and the scene is supposed to be the MysteryMan kneeling at the grave of his wife. You guys can tell me if I pulled it off.

  8. ams says:

    These are some great concepts.

I truly recommend to anyone reviewing each entry, that you get the music going first then open the image for the full effect.

  9. Kaldath says:

Here is my First ( and Possibly only) Entry

    The Sister of Pain

Based on the Vince Neil Song “Sister Of Pain”

  10. Stulte says:

    @ KSW
While your entry doesn’t really fit the spirit of this contest I have to say it’s a pretty damn good imitation.

  11. Stulte says:

Maria I Braganza: Queen of New Portugal

Daughter of Darkness by Tom Jones was a big inspiration: both the semi-hispanic melodies and the lyrics.

  12. Stulte says:

Just noticed the left margin of my latest entry. Here’s a revised version:

This is my first entry for the contest. Everyone’s favourite rock…Loadstone.

And I’m not sure if I’m posting this link correctly but here’s the song that inspired it.

I had fun with this contest.

Of course I have aften done satyr pipers, and recently posted some in the Poses contest.
But I wanted to do a new one that was more abstract about the feeling of the music and not just the musician playing it.

As a kid this song got to me every time.
I recently found out the dog didn’t drown as I had thought for like 30 years, the lines “… she’s drifting out to sea, she always loved to swim away” came from Gross’s neighbors being so loud when he wrote the song, he listened to a relaxing surf recording and it wormed it’s way into the lyrics LOL

  16. Vampyrist says:

Based on Turn, Turn, Turn! by the Byrds and the biblical quote the lyrics come from.

I envisioned it as the final speech a hero would make before sacrificing himself to save his teammates.

“There is a time for everything. A time to live and a time to die. I’m afraid its the latter for me. Go on, I’ll hold them off.”

  17. Cliff says:

    OK, I have more,
I hope I don’t get anyone angry sharing so many.

Killer Queen(Killian Quinn) is my Wrestler,
He is an outrageous out and proud wrestler, who bares an
amazing resemblence to Freddy Mercury. He loves to humiliate his straight opponents.
He started out as a Heel but oddly enough became a Face
despite, or maybe because of, his outrageous antics and
notable feud with Tasty Tommy Wu..
    From 1997 – 2008 – He had been in U.W.L. Universal

I’m sorry I was in a satyr mood in HM3 when the song came on …

Felicia Faust my character for Suicide Squad game.
Mystic daughter of villian sorcerer Felix Faust.
One of the few really bad characters I have.
She got a teammate killed just for insulting her father, a major pet peeve of hers.
If her pic bares a resemblence to Black Canary action figure, it’s only because it’s what I based her look on, which that
figure looked NOTHING like Black Canary I knew in the comics, so I didn’t feel bad about it.

She actually had a soundtrack: (I don’t expect people to listen to all of them, heck ya might not have even waded through the post this far. But it’s here if you like)
    Witchy Woman – Eagles

    Dark Lady – Cher

I was bored at work and listening to Prince’s Batman soundtrack when I came up with the concept of “Vigilante Inc.” at first I was just trying to capture the feeling of your average campy 80’s sci fi film
but I have been fleshing out the the characters and there story lately and this track off of that album was a huge influence on what I came up with….

The story takes place in a late 80’s action movie version of the future. The massive sprawl that is “St. Marc City” is riddled with crime and corruption. A clandestine group known only as The Sponsors is funding a covert crime fighting unit to serve and protect the citizens of St. Marc by any means necessary. We enter this world as former police commissioner Farrah Haddad is in the process of recruiting her team for the task The Sponsors have given her. She enlists the aid of three highly trained individuals with special abilities. Brilliant ex SMPD detective Lucas Rook enhanced with advanced cybernetics, telekinetic kunoichi Akiko Black, and Jaxon Belmont a gifted marksman. Together they are the future of Justice….

Herr D – my wife Brenda lover Purple People Eater and was dancing in her chair listening to it. It used to be her mother’s fave song when she was alive.
And regarding your pic of it, Bre says she likes it, but she hates it if it wins over me LOL
Great piece dewd. It could win due to it’s whimsy and great execution of course.
