Minecraft Java Edition: Installing Shaders - ICEHC MakerSpace - University At Albany Shaders are used to enhance your gameplay experience in Minecraft by making the environment more realistic. It might look a bit heavy on the computer but you can adjust the shaders according to your computer specifications to get the same experience. The left has no shaders; the right has those we will install in this demo. Installation Guide OptiFine Installation 1. Shaders can only be used with OptiFine. Check which Minecraft: Java Edition version are you using. To figure this out, launch up the Minecraft Launcher and look at the bottom left next to the 'PLAY' button. In this demonstration, you are viewing the 1.16.3 version. 2. Head over to https://optifine.net/downloads To view more versions, click on 'Show all versions'. Since we are on 1.16.3 version, we will be using Minecraft Optifine 1.16.3 HD U G4, which is the latest and stable version as of November 2nd, 2020. Click (Mirror), and then Download'. Clicking (Mirror>' instead Download> is because it skips an URL shortener that has been infested and infested, with ads that we don’t want to see. If an ad is presented, DO NOT click on it. The buttons you should only click on are those shown in the following images. Your browser/antivirus may not allow the file download. This message will appear if you are using Google Chrome browser. You will notice that there is an additional option called OptiFine that has replaced the latest release. Click on the dropdown menu to select the OptiFine version featuring their logo. 6. Click 'PLAY" and wait for Minecraft launch. How to Get Shaders and Install them 1. The go-to website for legitimate shaders is through CurseForge located here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/customization. There are many shaders to choose from. It is up to you to experiment and decide which shaders work best for you. For this example we will be using BSL Shaders located here: https://www.curseforge.com/minecraft/customization/bsl-shaders 2. After 5 seconds, click 'Download' to download the file automatically. 3. Go back to Minecraft as it was loaded in step 6 of the OptiFine Installation section. Click 'Options ...' Click here to go to 'Video Settings ...' Next, click on Shaders ...' Finally, click on the 'Shaders Folder’ to be directed the the folder in which we will install the shader. 4. With the shader folder open, we will drag the shader we previously downloaded into the folder. 5. Now, go back to Minecraft and you will see that your shader has been successfully installed. The last step is to click on it to use it. Congratulations! Congratulations! After the shaders have successfully loaded, you can return to the main screen to load up a new world or join a multiplayer server.
