How To - Run Your Own Minecraft Server On A Mobile My son wanted to play Minecraft last night with his friends. It's very easy to play Minecraft with your friends if you live in the same place or have the same WiFi access points. He spent New Years Eve with his friends, creating new worlds on the sofa, iPads in hand. They were all in one house so they all connected to the same WiFi hotspot. It can be difficult to connect if you are in different locations. MINECRAFT SERVERS It involves connecting to a server on the internet, but if you want to make one yourself you'll have to download a Windows executable or a Java file which you can run on Linux. You may have a Windows machine lying around your house. But do you really want it on constantly? It'll only be showing this screen... That'll mean that you need a computer running (or a server on the internet) and you'll need to open the relevant ports. You can do all of this with an old Android phone. You will need the PocketMine application and a phone that can be left on. Before you start, you should be familiar with the basics of how your broadband router operates. Most routers are pretty locked down, and your broadband provider doesn't like you messing around with the settings too much. Here are the details if you want to "fiddle" with your router settings. Download the app to get the version that you want. The "Stable" version worked well for me. I'll come back to the rest of the app setup process in a minute but it's all pretty self-explanatory, needing a name and a not much else. When you open Minecraft, click "Play" and then "New", you'll see a symbol at the top that looks something like this. That is a feat that not many people can achieve. They create a world, and then they go. You'll need to hit this in a moment. It'll ask for the name of the world (you can enter anything), the IP address, or name of the server, and the port. That last bit is where you'll need to tweak your broadband router. First, find your external IP address. Simply type "my IP" in Google or use a free IP detection tool such as turboluck.com/my_ip. This information will be needed to share with your family and friends so they can use it to connect to your server from their phones or tablets. However, they'll be trying to connect on a certain port. This port can be almost any Minecraft-related thing, so choose one (or leave the default one) and then enter the advanced setting for your broadband router. You're going to be looking for something called "NAT / PAT". Tell your router to forward requests for your selected external port to the appropriate internal port on your LAN's IP address. Yes, this can be a bit confusing. Let's begin with the PocketMine app. Run it, and it will ask you to set up a server name, a port, and what kind of game you would like to create (Creative or Survival, Adventure, Spectator). Once you've started it, you can leave it in your house. However, you will need the IP address of the phone. You can access your WiFi settings to see what IP address it has. It might be 192.168.0.7 or something like that. Take a note. Next, head to your router and go into your NAT / PAT rules and set it so that any requests for your magic port (say, 22535) go to 192.168.0.7 (your phone) on port 22535. What you're doing here is basically a bit of routing, which is what the thing is for. It's then easy to get your friends to input your IP address and the port you have set. All you need is an Android phone with the app installed. It's done.
