Minecraft Owner Bans In-game NFTs to Discourage Profiteering Minecraft developer Mojang Studios is taking a firm stance against NFTs. The studio, which is owned by Microsoft and Microsoft, has declared that the integration of NFTs into Minecraft are not something they would accept or allow. Mojang stated that blockchain technology isn't allowed to be integrated into our client and server apps. According to Mojang, some companies have developed "NFT implementations that are associated with Minecraft world files and skin packs." The studio also suggests that there could theoretically be Minecraft "collectible" NFTs or that players can earn NFTs by doing things in Minecraft on a server or earning them outside of the game. Mojang claims that these practices promote digital exclusion and scarcity, which goes against Minecraft's principles. Mojang has stated that NFTs "are not inclusive of all communities and create a scenario where the haves and have-nots." Mojang goes even further by declaring that the speculative character of NFTs "encourages profiteering." The blog post is worth reading in all its entirety. It outlines many critiques of NFTs and blockchain-related projects in a clear and understandable way. (There are numerous other quotes I could add to the list. Valve has also taken a firm stand against NFTs and blockchain games on Steam. Most of the gaming community has rejected NFTs. Ubisoft stopped making NFTs to Ghost Recon Breakpoint only a few months after the initiative was launched. Epic Games stated last year that it was "open" for blockchain-based games to be played on the Epic Games Store. The store was the first to receive a blockchain-based game in June. Mojang does not completely exclude the possibility of incorporating blockchain technology in the future.
