Character Design Contest ♯98- Starting At The Beginning

This one’s going to be interesting. What I want you to do this week is very simple. I want you to do is create a character. They can be anything, hero, villain, alien, male, female, strong-man, speedster or techie, does not matter. BUT, you can only use Heromachine Version 1…

Have fun. Oh and also, by entering this contest you are giving permission for the character/ characters you enter to be used in a future contest in two weeks time, ok?

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: http://www.heromachine.com/forum/the-heromachine-art-gallery/dblades-whiz-bang-item-dispenser/. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post pictures and images that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Character Design Contest ♯97- The 200th

Now, I’m very excited about this one.

For those of you who haven’t quite figured it out yet, this week marks the 200th Character Design Contest on the Heromachine blog, counting all of the contests hosted by Jeff, Hammerknight and myself. And, since the 100th CDC was a best-of contest, lets make this one the same.

The rules are simple. Each person gets ONE entry and one entry only. The original submission rules apply, so that’s the rules on file naming that were in place when Jeff ran the contests (which will be listed below). You cannot enter a piece that has won a contest before, or made it onto a poll, however, previous contest entries are otherwise allowed. Any entries that do not conform to these rules will be disqualified, and I’m going to be being very very picky about this. ALL the entries will be put into the poll for the week, I have absolutely no say in who goes on the poll, if you enter you’re guaranteed a shot at the win and the prize.

Now what is the prize I don’t hear you ask because I’m typing this in advance of it being posted. Well, in addition to the usual dblade patented Whiz Bang Item, your winning entry will be immortalised in the Heromachine Hall Of Fame alongside the best artworks produced by the greatest heromachiners of all time.

Oh, and just for the record, as I’m not judging for the poll this week, I’m gonna be entering. No prizes for guessing why I’m excited now.

Anyway, as I’ve already said, only one entry per person, and as usual the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: http://www.heromachine.com/forum/the-heromachine-art-gallery/dblades-whiz-bang-item-dispenser/. Please make sure you read the contest rules before entering, because it would suck to get disqualified from this contest. Have fun and good luck to everyone.

Please make sure your entries are named properly, because I’m not going to go and rename them all myself. If they’re not named properly, they just get ignored, I’m not even going to ask you to rename them, they just get skipped. I’ve made it plain enough, you don’t do it right, it’s your look out not mine. Them’s the breaks I’m afraid.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

Character Design Contest ♯96- Mad Scientists & Monsters

So, time for the annual Halloween contest and this year, instead of just asking you to design a monster, I thought I’d give y’all the opportunity to be a bit more creative. What I want from you is a duo in the vein of Frankenstien and his eponymous monster, a creature and its creator. The creature can be undead, mechanical or inhuman (e.g. werewolf, swamp creature) but you must include both characters in the same image, much like last weeks contest. However, unlike last weeks contest, no external editing, both characters must be done in the same export from heromachine.

Also, stay tuned for next weeks contest. It’s going to be a VERY good one. :)

Character Design Contest ♯95- Smells Like Team Spirit

Ok guys, what I want you to do for this weeks contest is create a team of some sort. It can be any kind of team you want, superhero team, sports team, army corp, music band etc. but I must insist that it consists of 2 or more recognisably individual members and that they be identifiable as a team by means of either a shared logo/ motif or by a shared colour scheme. Also, all the members must be submitted in one image, they cannot be submitted individually or you will be disqualified. To make this a bit easier, I will allow the user of programs other than heromachine for you to put the team together in one image, and only to put the team together in one image, any other external editing is not allowed.

Character Design Contest ♯94- Going Japanese

This week is going to be interesting. What I want you guys to do is make a character or image based on Japanese culture or mythology. I’ll let you decide on what exactly that means just to make it a bit more fun, for you guys and for me, because I want you to be as creative as possible. I know some people will really like this weeks challenge, some maybe not so much.

As per usual, there are no limits on entries and the contest will close midnight next Saturday.

Character Design Contest ♯93- Here Come The Girls

Ok, time to be sexist and say “sorry guys, you aren’t allowed in this contest.” Because what I want you guys to do this week is come up with the best female character you can. Sounds simple right? Well, to make it a bit more interesting, you only get one shot at it. That’s right, only one entry per person. I don’t know how Cliff is going to cope. ;) It doesn’t matter what genre you do or if the character is a hero, villain or an ordinary person, just so long as they’re female. And obviously, keep it within the rules please, nothing too lewd or costumes that are too revealing please.

The contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time) as per usual.

Character Design Contest ♯92- Public Domain Superheroes

It’s been a while since we’ve done a Public Domain redesign contest, so let’s have one this week. What I want you to do is pick some characters from the list below and redesign them to fit a modern comic book feel. Simple as that.

List here: http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Comic_Book_Characters

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). The winner gets to claim a custom made item from dblade to be put into heromachine, so long as the item conforms to his prize rules, which you can find here: http://www.heromachine.com/forum/the-heromachine-art-gallery/dblades-whiz-bang-item-dispenser/. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Character Design Contest ♯91- Seven Deadly Sins

Another throw back contest for y’all this week. Much like witht eh Western Zodiac contest we did a few weeks ago, Jeff ran a couple of contests based around the seven deadly sins (which btw one of which was my first ever contest entry ;) ) so I think it’ll be interesting to see how people take on this one and how people have improved if they were around to have entered first time around. In case anyone doesn’t know what the Seven Deadly Sins consist of, they are Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Sloth, Wrath, Envy and Pride. Now, the idea here is to represent one or more of these sins through a character or a scene. You can do more than one in one picture, but ti has to be obvious which sin you are trying to represent. Also, a word of warning, I know lust is on that list, that does not give free pass to be explicit. PG-13 please.

Character Design Contest ♯90- Insect Themed Characters

This weeks challenge does exactly what it says on the tin. You have to create an insect themed superhero or super villain. So we’re talking insect inspired powers and costumes. I’m sure you don’t need me to give any examples. I know at least one person is going to be very happy with this weeks challenge.

Character Design Contest ♯89- Everyday Superheroes

Ok, before we get into this weeks contest, I feel I have an apology to make. Last week I neglected to post the contest and, if I’m honest, I have no good explanation why. I just forgot. I have a feeling I was doing something at the time, my entire family was home so it would be a fair assumption, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was. So, I apologise for missing the contest. I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

So, with that out of the way, let’s get on to business. What I want you guys to do, it create a superhero or villain in everyday clothes, like Heroes or Marvels The Runaways. Powers must be shown, but what those powers are does not matter. All characters must be able to fit in to normal society, so no monstrous mutations or green skinned aliens (unless you can show them blending in to human form in some manner), your characters must be indistinguishable from any other person you’d see walking down the street in your local town (minus the super-powers obviously).
