orbison_wide-2249eda77127479c949924e7305e80349a78672d

On this day in 1964, Roy Orbison released his hit song “Pretty Woman”.

Your Pop Quiz challenge this time around is to create an image of a pretty woman…walking down the street…in 1964.

There is no prize. There is no poll. The winner is chosen by me.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine forums, ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • The image must be new and designed specifically for the Pop Quiz;
  • No copyrighted characters please – they will be deleted.
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  • Please make the link go directly to the image(like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). See this post on how to get the direct link for most sites.

This contest will close at 9pm Eastern on Sunday, August 30th.

Pop Quiz – Winner!

Very happy to say we got seven entries this week! Well done all! Sadly, due to a wonky link, I was unable to view EW44’s entry, so we are left with six pieces.

First up, Blunt Object’s Cheetah Shadow which features a very cool costume design and a great colour combination.

Cheetah Shadow 1-blunt object

Next is Vampyrist’s Flaming Mask; well thought out costume and interpretation of the flaming mask feature.

Vampyrist-FlamingMask2

Ruffblade’s Diamond Flame is very nicely highlighted and the diamond hand and forearm are standouts. Has a real Golden Age feel.

Professor Ice by lordgrimm has a real Silver Age look to it, and the helmet, neck and chest pieces are very cool.

Dreadyacht’s The Time Hourglass is wonderfully quirky, and I love the way his look is cobbled together.

And Herr D’s Skeleton Orchid battling a feline onslaught is imaginative, light hearted and the composition is great!

And the winner this week is…

Roughblade for Diamond Flame. There is something about this, perhaps the retro feel of the character, that had me going back for a second and third look. And while the costume itself is quite simple, it is nicely realized and contrasts the work on the “diamond” areas in a very interesting way.

Congrats and well done!

See you Saturday.

Character Design Contest ♯136- Winging It

♯Puns

Anyway, basically the idea here is you create a character that has wings. It’s that simple. Doesn’t have to be a humanoid character mind you, but it has to have wings. (Quick tip, there’s a pegasus in the companions section that has some really nice wings, so take a look at what masking you can do with them if you feel so inclined as to not use any of the backplane wings). Oh and the wings don’t have to be your standard angel configuration either (from the shoulder blades).

Have fun, and if you get stuck, just wing it…

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

Pop Quiz – Random

a-mc-random-28

Your Pop Quiz challenge this time around is to visit the Superhero Name Generator in the link below, and have it generate a random name of neutral gender and create a kick @$$ hero or villain based on the result.

Be sure to either copy the link to your character name, or screen cap the result, and add it to your post so we can see the name and bio you were given. Entries without the link or screen cap will be disqualified.

Just a warning: some of the random names are pretty…out there.

I encourage everyone to use the first random result they get, and while I cannot control your minds…yet…that just adds to the challenge.

Kaldath’s Caption Contest #71

It is once again time for our caption contest and once again I am continueing the Gif format as it seems to be working out rather well. So your challenge gif this week is thus:

Thor 1

The normal rules apply, which are: You are limited to Three (3) entries which are due by 5:00 PM Eastern Time on Tuesday August 24th. Of course I as always expect you to keep your entries no worse than PG-13 in nature and that you follow all the normal rules of the forum when writing your caption for the above image. That being said I wish you all Good luck!

Character Design Contest ♯135- Modern Gods

So guys, this week I want you to do a modern take on a God from some form of Mythology. This can take the form of doing a superhero version a-la Marvel’s Thor or doing an everyday version, I don’t much mind which. If you can think of some other way of modernising mythological deities then I’ll be interested to see it, so don’t go asking “is this ok”. Just go with it. Most of you can tell ancient from modern right?

Of course there are some stipulations. 1. No Greek/ Roman Gods. They are obvious, cliche and I plan to do a contest on them at some point in the near future. 2. No Gods from any current major world religions. We don’t want to offend anyone do we, even if offence isn’t intended.

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Pop Quiz Winner!

First of all, I have to apologize for the lapse in the Pop Quizzes so soon after they were relaunched. Like any good teacher, when summer came I ran for the hills; unfortunately the hills I ran to had very sketchy satellite internet, so getting online to do anything was pretty much hit and miss. Next week’s quiz is already in the pipe, so you can expect them on a more regular basis now that fall is approaching.

Anywho…

There were three entries for this week’s quiz…well technically three and a half as dreadyacht did not include a link with his entry.

bluntobject-screamingmimi

First we had Blunt Object’s Screaming Mini/Tamora.

Great detail here. The layers of the dress are very well done, as is the complexity of the bodice/corset. Also the attention to detail in the background is great. The only part of it I would question is that the quiz asked for a modern day version of the character, and this is decidedly period. Still…great work.

Next we had Vampyrist’s Iago.

Vampyrist-HonestIago

Love the character’s description, and the whole duality vibe. The costume is very well done; nice colour contrast with the black, modern, and I really like the chest logo; hard to make the letter “I” interesting, but he did it.

And last, but certainly never least, Nug’s Mark Antony.

nug_et_tu_brutay_by_nugarius-d95xxl0

This is a stunning portrait. The breastplate details are awesome, and the shading and layered belts are a nice touch. Like Blunt Object though, this is much more a portrait of Mark Antony than it is a modern take on the character. Very well done though.

And so the winner this week is Vampyrist. Please join me in congratulating the winner, and thanks to all who entered…and almost entered.

See you next Saturday!

Pop Quiz – To Be, Or Not To Be…A Hero Or A Villain?

MACBETH

MACBETH

On August 15th, 1057 – Macbeth, the King of Scotland, was killed by the son of King Duncan.

Your Pop Quiz challenge this time around is to choose one of Shakespeare’s classic characters and re-imagine them as a modern day superhero or villain. Add a brief (brief!) description of their powers, or let the image stand on its’ own.

There is no prize. There is no poll. The winner is chosen by me.

You only get one entry so be creative, and above all else, have fun!

Character Design Contest ♯134- Itemised

Ok guys, earlier this week MadJack was kind enough to provide us with a plethora of new items to use. You can find a list of them here. So your challenge this week is simple. You must create an image using any three of these items. That’s it. Well no actually that’s not it. You must use items from three different sub-categories (e.g. headgear-standard, headgear-glasses and insignia-shapes would be a viable combination, but not three from insignia-shapes, so no blood-splatter overuse). Hopefully that’s clear enough.

As per usual, no limits on entries and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.
