Character Design Challenge #311 – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Your challenge this week is to create a character you might find in a classic western movie.

Sheriff, bandit, bartender, undertaker – anything that saddles your horse.

Please follow the instructions below for naming your files.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

This contest will close on Sunday, March 5th at 9:00am Eastern.

  4. Can you believe it’s been about two years since I entered a challenge? I can’t.

    Here’s Ada Wilder (who’s normally a noir character) in a Western AU:

  5. This will probably draw a lot of ire, but I hate Westerns. I truly undeniably legitimately hate them. They bore me to almost literal tears. That being said I’ll just skip this CDC and watch y’all duke it out. Very nice creations thus far!

  6. Here’s my character, “Blue Boy”, a former Jayhawker, then Union cavalry soldier, turned shootist, and self appointed vigilante engaged in a personal campaign against Southern Bushwackers turned outlaws.

  7. The background is not HM.

  8. Question: “Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine”. Does that mean absolutely nothing in the image whatsoever can be non-HM? e.g. filters, shading, lighting, highlights, shadows, actions, brushes, backgrounds, etc etc? If the character itself is all HM, but then a filter is applied (as in my entry) does that disqualify it?

    I think that the tradition has been not to allow the use of other programs or features in contest entries. The point of the challenges is not “look what I can do”, but rather “look what I can do with HeroMachine”. Perhaps JR could speak to this since I am still a bit of a newbie.

    Ok. In my opinion, I don’t think non-Heromachine elements should be allowed in a contest, seen as the whole idea is based around skill with the tools provided within the program and only using heromachine gives somewhat of an even playing field, as everyone has access to Heromachine, whilst not everyone has photoshop or other image editing software. If I were still running the contests, I wouldn’t allow that entry unfortunately.

    Thanks for the clarification JR.

    djuby: Even Blazing Saddles?

    Even blazing saddles. Literally the only western I like is The Magnificent Seven (the ORIGINAL one with Yul Brenner. All of the sequel’s and reboots and remakes are just poo.) So beyond the Magnificent Seven no Westerns for me.

  18. The Pinkerton detective was about to scream. Five of the seven of the old Madsen gang were dead, shot to pieces as they’d tried to gallop out of town with the bank bags. The sixth was in irons, awaiting trial, only because he’d forgotten to load his guns.

    WHERE WAS THE YOUNGEST?

    Neil Madsen had escaped before. Quick thinker, very dangerous. Somehow, in all the commotion, he’d gotten out of town with TWELVE BAGS OF GOLD. “It’s not like the man’s invisible!” said the detective. “He’s got bright red hair. Bright green eyes. Buck teeth big as your fingernails. He’s got six fingers on his right hand. He’s humpbacked, he walks with a limp, and he can barely lift ONE bag of gold. He can shoot, but he left his guns in the bank. He’s good on a horse, but none have been stolen. Doesn’t ANYBODY have ANY idea where he could’ve gone?”

    Little Jimmy raised his hand.

    “We’re not in your schoolhouse, boy; spit it out!”

    “The photographer had me call a carter to put his cases on the stage. He said he had to get to the next town in a hurry. He was wearing spurs, sir. And then there’s the man in the saloon. He’s pretty drunk.”

    “What are you saying, boy?”

    “Jimmy! The man in the saloon. He said he started drinkin’ when somebody stole his camera and everything he owned at the point of a big Bowie knife and threw him into a horse trough. Said the sheriff was too busy with the bank bein’ robbed to talk to him.”

    The Pinkerton detective spun on his heel, slapped the sheriff right across his face, and ran out of the building. The penny he’d thrown into the air landed at Jimmy’s feet.

  20. I’ve reworked Blue Boy a bit. He’s still at the same URL, but the image has changed. If you downloaded a copy, djuby, could you re-fetch it, and go with the new version? Thanks.

    Story is the same:

    “Blue Boy” is a former Jayhawker, then Union cavalry soldier, turned shootist, and self-appointed vigilante engaged in a personal campaign against Southern Bushwackers turned outlaws.
