Character Design Challenge #184- Shocking!

Ok folks, this week your CDC Challenge is to visit the link below and choose one of the public domain heroes/villains with electrical based powers and re-imagine them for 2016. You must also mask at least one pattern into your entry, and use at least 4 examples of shading and highlighting.

There is no limit on the number of entries. Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck. The contest will close at 9:00am Eastern on Sunday, August 28th.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

 All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackPhotoBucket, or whatever);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this).

    Thor (Fox)
    Real Name Grant Farrel
    First Appearance Weird Comics #1(1940)
    Original Publisher Fox
    Created by Pierce Rice

    Believing that the world needed a defender, Thor, son of Odin and supreme ruler of Valhalla, bestowed upon the human Grant Farrel his own powers, which Grant used to become a crime fighter. When he transformed into Thor, Farrel could fly, throw lightning bolts, and generate storms. He wielded Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, which could be thrown hard enough to smash through multiple tanks but, like a boomerang, would return to his hand.

    (I used the same pose essentially, and background, but YES I actually DID cover him up more than in the origin pic. Taking my temperature now)

    Shock Gibson (Hero)

    Real Name Robert Gibson
    First Appearance Speed Comics # 1 (1939)
    Original Publisher Harvey
    Created by Maurice Scott

    Robert Charles Gibson, a wealthy scientist, was experimenting with electricity and chemicals when a lighting struck his lab. The electric shock caused the lab to expode, but Gibson emerged from the wreckege with a body that could conduct and generate electricity. His friend and a fellow scientist, Dr. Blitzen, pointed out that this power gave him an opportunity to change the world for the better. Swearing to use the power to for the good of humanity, he decided to fight crime as Shock Gibson, the Human Dynamo.
    The first time he used his powers was at the gym which was full of rich patrons who were being robbed. Gibson stopped the theives as we was wearing his gym clothes which became his uniform plus a lightning mask.
    In spite of using his surname in his codename, nobody can figure out who he is under the mask.
    He can generate enough electricity to shock an entire river, weld metal, and even blast through metal walls. He also can fly, has super-strength, and can generate electro-magnetism. Early on, he needed to recharge periodically, but that became less and less necessary later.

    (YES! I had to show more skin, and since two of the pics did …..)

    so electric arrows picture is of a heromachine design lol

  4. William A. Peterson says:

    cliff, great choice with Thor, less so for that Human Dynamo fellow… 😉
    {Hmmm… Ever notice that Shock Gibson is never around at the same time as that guy? Nope, me neither!}

  5. cliff says:

    @Xinmodic. If I understand what you mean, the Lightning bolt is in the Insignias Standard.

    @A. Peterson, Thanks about Thor and LOL 😀 about Shock

    @ everyone else, Come on people give me some competition, it’s no fun to win by default.
    I want to see some other people’s costume do-overs.

  6. Herr D says:

    I ran into this problem . . . invulnerable characters with no garments from the same source . . . AFTER tweaking the backstory so daddy dearest wasn’t a murderer or a Mengele.

    “Radior Meets Red Tape”

    Haven’t had much time this week, but I might as well throw my hat into the ring, make up enough people to at least have some honourable mentions.
    Was originally going to have him green, but that would have looked way too much like Electro, and turquoise didn’t work so I just went blue.

    Here’s Lightning Girl.

    And Djuby, thanks for reminding me why I usually stay away from the patterns. You almost killed my computer.

    Oops! I’ll keep that in mind.

  9. Xinmodic says:

    No if you go to his page on the image for the character is of a heromachine made character

    I know bad/lazy descriptions ohh well.

    Known only as “Mastermind”. With his super brain and electric powers creating a robot army for evil was a simple matter.

    A thug tried (stupidly) to rob a science lab. Tripping and pulling a lever he shouldn’t he got morphed into a creature made entirely of electricity. He dispersed in a matter of days but in his short time as “The Living Bolt” he caused massive damage and mayhem.

    Tom Higgins. Has always been a hero to his community but after working on a suit and formula to become a real super hero, he succeeded. Going by the name “Shield” he works to defend even more than ever.

    My version- a circus performer named Violet Campbell was performing her act when lightning stuck the tent. It was no ordinary tempest, the evil Dr. Rads was trying to perfect a radiation storm to purge the city. The bizarre bolt stuck Violet as she clung to the central pole of the Big Top, electroplating her arm and part of her face with steel. She can now gather and emit lightning blasts and wears a special costume to help conduct and store the large amounts energy she generates. She now calls herself Voltess.
