This week's Character Design Challenge is roaring in like a lion! Literally. Because it's time for Zodiac Contest LEO!
Yes, your challenge for this week is to design the coolest character image possible with the theme of "Leo". You might design something around a lion (duh), or something based on the astrological profile of those born under the sign, or something completely different. It's up to you so long as it in some way ties into the theme!
The person with the winning entry as selected by our expert panel (i.e. me) will win their choice of a) a portrait to go in HeroMachine 3, b) an item to go in HeroMachine 3, or c) a custom black and white "Sketch of the Day" style drawing (also by me). The rules otherwise are the same as always:
- All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, whatever);
- Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
- The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest;
- Please name your files as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
- Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
- All entries must be in by next Monday, when I'll choose a winner.

I do enjoy these zodiac contests. They seem to bring out some great stuff.
Anyways, here’s my entry: King Leontes. One of the qualities of Leo is leadership, and an ability to inspire followers. With that in mind, I constructed this scene of a King rallying his troops before a great battle outside the ruins of an old fortification. Originally, the guardsmen were meant to have their arms raised in the air as if cheering for the king, but there was nothing I could do to make them look good enough. But I think the piece works without.

The sign of Leo seems like it would present so many options for the Zodiac Commandos (my low-budget, GI Joe rip-off). But since we started with Scorpio, so many of the good concepts were already taken. In the end, rather than making Leo a specialist, I made him an all-purpose infantryman, the backbone of the team.

Tarkabarka (84): It’s not a problem if you put a design on facebook. Some people use facebook to enter already, so I don’t see any problem with you doing it. The thing with not seeing it is just Jeff doesn’t look at any of the entries till the end or something. Hope that helps 🙂
The site continues to struggle a bit with some back-end things like commenting. Apologies for the frustration. I may be moving to a new hosting solution in the next few days. But, what you’re probably seeing when the comment doesn’t immediately appear is the new caching plugin we’re using to try and speed up the site — the page doesn’t reload with the latest comments till a bit later.

Dr. William Lionheart was once nown as a world-famous gene therapist, who was able to cure almost any disease. One accident led to another, when Dr. Lionheart tried to create a serum, which would be able to extend the human age further. During the testing, Dr. tested the serum on himself first. This gave him advanced reflexes and speed. Yet this also made him go insane and start hunting people for prey. He often uses his medical stun drugs to stun people and then drag his prey back to the lair, where he performs surgeries to separate the meat from the body. Over 80 years, he has gathered advanced technology to help him, for example, his special ranged needles, which are full of deadly poison. Overall, his serum did work and extended his life.

Old African legends speak of a demi-god, known as Soronu, who would visit certain people in dreams. It’s still unknown why he does that. An ancient prophecy has also recoreded that Soronu did, infact lived once. Then he was known as a lion-speaker. A person who was able to talk to the lions. He was eventually executed in herecism, but still lingers at the astral plane. As the lion propeth, he was powerful enough to kill eight well-trained warriors by just choking them to death, using his extra six ethereal lion-arms. Some people who have been visited by Soronu in dreams, often describe that his face is rotten.

Caspera was born on July the 28th, 2078, 3 years after the Great Nuclear War. Her tribe, the Wild Cats, had mutated and they’ve got super strenght and swiftness. She was cought as a specimen of the tribe, and brought in to New Washington Research Facility for for DNA extraction. Well, at least that’s what was supposed to happen. She broke free, and now’s on the loose. Don’t mess with the Wild Cat!
When does the contest close? I will be able to post more art around 6pm ish and hope I make it in time.

I did a bit of research on the Neamean Lion. One of the things that struck me was the use of the description “impenetrable golden hide and razor sharp claws that could rend through any armor.” I’ve probably read this a few times, but recently I started to think that rather than the golden brown fur of most lions, what if the Neamean Lion actually had a metallic hide that looked like gold?
The second was a pre-Herculean story about the Neamean Lion, wherein it captured and abducted a maiden from the outskirts of the city of Neamea, and carried her back to its cave. Neamea quickly responded, sending its hero and a contingent of his finest warriors to go rescue the maiden. When the managed to get to the monster’s cave, they found the maiden, injured but alive, and no sign of the Lion. As they approached the maiden to rescue her, they discovered the horrible truth. The maiden had been long since devoured, the Neamean Lion had taken her form, and they were soon going to share her fate.

Maahes and Nefertem are lesser-known Egyptian gods who have so many things in common, they could be mistaken for the same god. Perhaps they are brothers. Both are said to be the son of either Bast or Sekhmet. Ptah is usually identified as father. Each has a protective quality, though Maahes seems to be more offensive, actively pursuing wrongdoers, and Nefertem more defensive. Both have healing qualities. Nefertem’s focus seems to be more on this aspect, as he is closely associated with the blue “lotus” (actually a lily), prized for its healing properties, as well as with healing ointments.

Oh, and Krashnaak, I am unsure when that’s going up. I think I need a better solution that doesn’t hammer the PHP and MySQL side of things so hard. I’m teetering right on the edge of usage limits that automatically shut the site down when usage gets too high. It’s been much more stable since the changes, so I’m a bit reluctant to mess with it.
My goal on that was to make it so I could just upload stuff once and it would automatically update the HOF page, but that doesn’t appear to be a viable solution after all. So I have to rethink it.
Thanks for the reply. Well, good luck with it, whatever you come up with. 😉 It’s nice to be able to see cremme de la cremme all on one place.
