I'm going to try something a bit different this week, and challenge you to come up with the best character portrait for someone named "Capstan". Whoever comes up with the best design (as judged by me) will win inclusion in a new "Hall of Fame" category on HeroMachine.com, which will feature each winning character in their own post, along with credit to you, a link to a web page of your choice (assuming it's clean!), and if you like, a brief history or story about the character. You'll also get to pick one item to be included in HeroMachine 3.
You can use any HeroMachine version you like, from Shakti to the Horror Edition to HeroMachine 3 Alpha, or whatever you like. To enter, make a comment to this post with a link to where your character can be seen online. If you don't have web hosting space, I recommend using the UGO HeroMachine Forums, where I've made a topic for this contest (registration required to post images). Or you can put it on Flickr, Photobucket, Facebook (make sure it's a public album), etc. So long as people can view the image without having to register or be on some kind of authorization list, I don't care where you put it. Just make sure you put the link to it in the comments to this post, or it won't count.
So, a quick review of the rules:
- Best costume design for a character named "Capstan" wins an entry in the Hall of Fame, as well as the ability to choose an item for inclusion in HeroMachine 3.
- All entries must be left as a link to an image in the comments to this post.
- You can use any HeroMachine version you like, but only HeroMachine versions -- no Marvel Creator or Her-O-Matic or whatnot.

Sheesh, Jeff, out of all the rotating machines used to control or apply force to another element, you pick “capstan”… How am I supposed to work with that?
My brilliant new strategy is to go to the Random Word Generator and take whatever it spits out at me. If it rotates, I’m happy! So to speak. Ahem.
Imagine if you used Seventh Sanctum to pick the name/genre. 🙂
Rule list is not clear on one item: Are editted images allowed, or must they be as-is *uneditted* images from the HeroMachine of choice?
They should be unedited. I want to see what the program can do, not Photoshop.

Thanks! Here’s the story of “Capstan, the Cybernetic Warrior.”
When 26-year old Roger Lestin was severely injured in a car crash in which the left side of his body was completely maimed, he thought there was no hope for him. However, when his doctor told him about a high-risk surgery in which cybernetic implants would be installed on his body, Roger promptly agreed to take the risk. He was lucky enough to survive the surgery and continue his life. A few weeks later, he witnessed an elderly man getting mugged. He distracted the criminal and punched him in the face… and that’s when he realized the surgery did more than just save his life.
The criminal flew all the way across the street and crashed right through a brick building! This shocked everyone in the area; however, none were more shocked than Roger himself. He decided that he could use the abilities of the implants along with a few “upgrades” to stop evil in it’s tracks. He gave the implants a fancy paint job, donned a suit of armor, and became Capstan, the Cybernetic Warrior!
For his powers, Capstan has super strength and enhanced speed(not fast enough to be called “super”). He also modified his cybernetic left eye to be able to use x-ray vision and shoot high-energy laser beams.
Well, what do you think?
Oh yeah, and don’t ask me why he chose “Capstan” for a name.
Jeff, if I were to make a “jedi” character and his back story in the Star wars canon, would it infringe on any copywrights. Just making sure. The last thing I want to happen is being suppoenaed by Lucasfilms.

I am loving the idea of a best blade contest! I can think of some pretty sweet looking swords and I would love to see what every one else can think of too. I will definitely be apart of that!

Lastly, I agree with TigerGuy, Imp and Merrick about the broken down gun pieces, this will definitely broadly expand the range of customization! Could you possibly add the end of the chainsaw somewhere? So we could add a chainsaw bayonet to any gun(staff) we create?
I love the concept of a chainsaw bayonet on a gun from Gears of War and I would love to see it here too!

Backstory- “Captain!..The Capstan! CAPSTAN!!! We’re LOSING THE WEIGHTS. LOOK OUT CAPTAIN!”
That is all i can remember before i fell into the sea. When i drifted down to Davy Jones Locker i can to the lair of an electric eel. As well as a squid both fighting over my half dead carcas. The eel shocked and we all sort of fused together our DNA’s making me a mutant. A sailor mutant by my memory. I now have the power to grow squid and eel limbs and i can produce small electrical shocks. Since one of the last memories i had was of Capstan being shouted, i choose Capstan as my name……..I Am Capstan.

Backstory: Captain Bookrind of the US army during the Vietnam War was caught in a time rift which sent him to our times. He is of Irish descent so he has an accent and during the rift he took damage to his vocal cords making him slur alot. So when he tried to tell people his name was Captain Bookrind he said Capstan Blookin AKA Capstan

Capstan – Demon of the Sea – Ishmael Da-Gobi was a poor merchant sailor who was terrified of the water. He was a spineless man who let everyone walk all over him. One fateful trip, his boat sank in the middle of the ocean, yet he survived by clinging to a broken piece of the ship’s capstan…lost and alone on the open sea, he happened to get picked up by a mystical band of demon-pirates. Having lost his sanity and being severely dehydrated, he made a pact with the pirates and became Capstan, Demon of the Sea, a cruel and insane monster whose soul pupose is to the sail the seas until he may one day be at rest, sane once again, with his family.

Cpastan Larreck was born on the planet of Corellia as the sun of wealthy shipping industrialist Lordar Larreck. He was discovered force sensitive and joined the Jedi order at age three. He was precocious and showed skill beyond his years, mastering the complex duel sabre battle style known as Jar-Kai. He was considered a prodigy and received knighthood at age 17, a record in the order. Mere weeks after his knighthood, the Yuuzon Vong launched theur invasion on the flegling New Republic. He was sent to an uninhabited jungle planet for recon. His recon team met large creatures, the voxy, and his entire team was slaughtered, he being left as the only survivor. Dissillusioned and traumatised, he put himself into self exile, blaming himself for his comrade’s death, living as a hermit on the planet of Dantooine, serving as a protecor of a small farming village, using his talents to drive the raiding thugs out of the village. (I know, it was long)

Capstan #2
Capstan, the Fallen Angel. Scours the seas, wreaks havoc upon lost sailors…was defeated by Blue Beard with an enchantment from a voodoo sorceress….has since escaped his imprisonment, but is still vulnerable to thecolor blue (hence the shackles and shield bond)
Once a legendary Superhero, Capstan got trapped under some wreckage in a burning building and pronounced dead. However he awoke in a strange room a month later and found himself stuck in a machine. It turns out that he was saved from the burning by a scientist, who tried to save the hero but his body was too destroyed for the operation and he ended up having his brain placed in a machine with two cylinders on his back to keep his brain alive with a specail toxin, which also charges his laser sword. upon seeing this he lost his mind and became a killer, starting with his creater. He then died after he learnt the error of his ways by saving the whole world from a nuclear holocaust by transfering the armageddon virus from the neclear reactor computer into himself, killing himself instanty.

Background:
Richard Myers was first mate of the four-man crew of the Rourke, a replica old-fashioned sailing ship. The Rourke was fighting a storm at sea one day when a major meteor shower occured; one of the meteorites exploded above the ship. The captain, Thomas Jones, was at the time inside the cabin attempting to radio shore, and spared any changes; the other three crewmen were forcibly imbued/imprinted with the elemental powers of the storm they were facing. Richard gained the (limited) ability to manipulate water, a power he normally uses to create a hook-and-chain device that can haul almost any object toward itself with little or no apparent strain.
The name ‘Capstan’ is, largely, a -mistake-. Upon trying to explain to a reporter what had happened, Captain Jones described his crew’s newfound abilities in nautical terms. The reporter used the descriptives as names, for Capstan and for the other crew members, now ‘dubbed’ as Luff (Mark Davison, wind powers) and Rygg (Ezra Carter, lightning powers – St. Elmo’s Fire). The Rourke’s crew do not, generally, use these names themselves.
Rather than going into business as ‘super-heroes’, Captain Jones wrangled a contract with the Coastal Search and Rescue division, as an independent unit running under the name ‘Storm Hounds’.

Heres my 3rd entry….Backstory: A man Half-dead from an explosion….Voices around him saying “Replace those limbs STAT….Hand me the backbrace……Helmet….Capstan hand replacment….Chain that attaches…..This operation is code Black secret Project Capstan…the laws titan!
He awakes in a hospital covered in bright armor from head-to-toe…..theres some kind of winch, Capstan he observes, replacing his hand. he looks at the night-stand and sees a helmet. He gets up and puts on the helmet,walks down the hall trying to igure out what the hell is going on. he lookedat his capstan and saw that there was a chain on it. and hanging from his new belt was a laser-sword and a gun. woah he thought. He meant to open the front door and ended up smashing it in! He walked on through the city and soon mastered how to use his sword, gun, and capstan/chain. he used his new skills to fight crime as Capstan based on his new hand!
