Character Design Challenge #337 Results

Again, we didn't have many entries for this weeks contest, which isn't great. However, as with last week, the quality of all entries was very, very high.

Thing is though, as good as the other two entries were, there could only really be one winner for me. And that would be the person who, in my opinion, used the restrictions of the contest in the most inspired way. And that would be SprocketSauce for their excellent cubist piece Prism.

Well done Sprocket, that's two in a row now.

What Were They Thinking?: Nat Zee Best Idea

Sometimes there are ideas that you'd just assume no-one in their right mind would ever be stupid enough to try, even in the world of comics. But this is What Were They Thinking, where we look at all of the stupidest and most ill-advised things in all of comic book history, so we've covered most of them, from a racist vampire who spread AIDS instead of vampirism to a man who attached a cannon to his crotch to make up for certain inadequecies.  And the storyline we're going to talk about today certainly falls into that category. And I'm sure everyone knows what is coming next...

Character Design Challenge #337: The Shape Of Things To Come

Ok guys, this week I want you to create the best character you possibly can. They must have a face, clothes and recognisable hands and feet, although hair and facial hair are optional. The catch? You must create your character using ONLY items found in Insignias- Standard, Insignias- Shapes and Background- Shapes. You cannot use items from any other item slot, no body parts, no tops, no pants, no hands, no feet and no hair, just shapes. Your characters can be anything you want; superhero, fantasy, sci-fi etc. so long as they are entirely made up of shapes.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. Please keep all submissions PG13: full or partial nudity is prohibited. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warning. Only post characters that have been created solely using Hero Machine, and that you know for certain have never been entered in a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

All entries must be in JPG or PNG form (BMPs are too big), posted to a publicly accessible website (like the HeroMachine :,ImageShackDeviantArt, or whatever - Please do not use Photobucket);

  • Entries must be made as a comment or comments to this post, containing a link directly to the image and the character name;
  • Please name your filesas [your name]-[character name].[file extension] before you upload it. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his “Bayou Belle” character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.

Please make the link go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). *

This contest will close on Sunday, September 17th at 9:00am Eastern.

Character Design Contest #336 Results

There weren't a lot of entries to this weeks contest, which I can't say was much of a suprise, the remit was unusual and quite strict. However, that didn't stiffle the entry quality, as all 5 entries are worthy of winning. Christi S's entry had probably the best realistic water effect and I especially liked how she did the rocks breaking the surface of the water. But I also have to give credit to both GJC6664 and Madison for their use of a "paint-brush" effect to achieve their water. Out of the two I'd say GJC's effect is better and less overwhelming for the picture as a whole, though Madison does get points for being the only person to attempt a foreground character. Then we have SprocketSauce's entry which utilises light, darkness and colour mixing alongside some interesting item usage to create an excellent scene. And finally we have HerrD, who also used some unusual item usage to create his sea creatures (sponges, coral, sea slugs and the like) which is something none of the others attempted.

However, despite this being a very hard descision, we do have a winner. It was close, but in the end I have to give the win to SprocketSauce and his entry DEEP DIVE.

What Were They Thinking?: Not Very Fantastic

Here on What Were They Thinking we look at all of the stupidest and most ill-advised things in all of comic book history. However, this week we're going to be looking at something that, in all fairness, actually does make a decent amount of sense, if only purely from a business perspective. But the fact that it makes business sense does not exclude it from being a WWTT target, simply because the spitefulness and meanspiritedness of the descision means that, as always, the only people who lose out are the fans. And of course, when we're talking spiteful and meanspirited, you know we're talking about these guys right?

Shin Godzilla Spoiler Free Review

Hey everyone, back again with another review. This time, we’re looking at a film I’ve been waiting to see for a while now, and finally got the chance to do so. This week we’re talking Shin Godzilla, the latest installment of the long-running franchise from Toho Studios. This is in fact the twenty-ninth film they’ve made for the big guy, and the thirty-first overall. As usual no spoilers ahead.
