Character Design Contest ♯112- Be A Pal-adin

So, onto our next Fantasy RPG category contest, this time covering the "tin can" classes. Your task is to create a character that fits into any of the fighter classes. So that's Barbarians, Knights, Paladins, stuff like that. So make sure your inventory is filled with the strongest armour,  the mightiest swords and the stoutest of shields. Physical strength is the order of the day here, so leave your traps and spells behind and get creating.

As per usual, no limits on entries this week and the contest will close at midnight Saturday (blog time). Please read the contest rules before entering, have fun and good luck.

Rules for posts, contests, and challenges that I am hosting: Original characters only, no copyrighted characters, no characters based on copyrighted characters, no characters based on RPG’s or other games. The characters must be your own design and not based on any character that might be copyrighted in any way. I have the right to delete any post that I believe crosses this line without warnings. Only post characters that you have either created for this contest specifically or you know for certain have never been entered to a contest before. If you aren’t certain, don’t enter it, because I’m not going to go back through all of the contests and check.

  1. @EE- You’re back?! EPIC!!!!!

  2. This may have been better suited to the mage contest, but I’ve always considered a paladin simply a warrior-mage mix, so.

  3. Ubiquitous Pixel

    Name: Raptor
    A very skilled warrior/knight
Takes advantage of long range(Mace attached to chain to swing), medium range(Mace), and short range(Giant Claws on left hand and dewclaws).

  4. Guy, not at all bad, but the typical Paladin is a cross between a Fighter and a Cleric… Think Lancelot duLac, and Roland, of Charlemagne’s Noble Knights…

  5. thanks.

  6. @WillyPete, so basically a historic templar (or even embellished forms such as those in Dragon Age)
    …and therein lies why I consider a paladin a warrior-mage mix

Admittedly I never knew much about D&D, which seems to be the standard, so my class interpretations obviously differ from most. I do appreciate the clarification and understand how it may apply to the contest, but I still am unswayed in my interpretation.

I always considered Arthur and his Knights to be just that, knights, and am not versed with Charlemagne beyond name recognition…defining sects with different names when they fill the same basic role seems a waste to me as far as overarching classes are concerned, so usually I borrow from history taking a common name and while trying to stay true to its core, define it as I interpret it. (though some would say this is ignoring reality, I consider it more instep with Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Tolkein’s elves (not comparing myself to either).

Armored warriors usually brings to mind a knight
Templar strikes me as a holy knight
Paladin a knight that wields magic. I usually like giving them robes with varying amounts of armor, but at their base I consider they fight in the form of a knight. Influenced by dragon age I’ve been giving my characters two forms of weapons on average, as above he can fight like a mage with stave in hand, or a knight with sword and shield, though his weapons are magical.

Sorry for the long winded post, and again thanks for the clarification

  7. Since it’s not just paladins but all fighters and warriors, I’d like to enter my Centurion from Hell.

  8. Entry #1
This is a redo of Raginmund – Captain Of The Guard
    Raginmund means “Wise Protector”

his wife Sascha “protector of mankind” was a midwife gardener herbalist/healer
After several miscarrages, Raginmund and Sascha prayed to the God of Guardians to provide them a son, and if He did, they would dedicate their son into service.
    They did have a child,
They named him Helmut to honor the God of Guardians.
(Didn’t do the paladin Helmut, since he reeks of the trademarked AD&D God of Guardians)

    Entry #2
As much as Ii like Raginmund, I wanted something more dramatic, and my love of satyrs came through once again.
While I like my satyrs to be lovers not fighters, that isn’t what this contest is, so here you have: a fierce Forest Warrior protecting his beloved home from orc invaders.

  9. Guy: In D&D terms, a Paladin is based on Lancelot, who was able to heal with his tears.
Charlemagne was a Historical figure, who had some stories told about that were slightly less factual.
Roland created the terrain feature known as Roland’s Gap, in Germany, when he sought to destroy his Magic Sword, Durendal, by striking a Mountain with it. The Mountain lost!
The Knights Templar were, more properly the Knights of the Temple at Jerusalem, Militant Monks who would escort the faithful on their journey to the Holy City… at least until the King of France, and the Pope of Avignon decided that they wanted the Templar’s money. That plan didn’t work out so well for them… 😉
You can do YOUR Paladins however you like, of course…
Just expect people to look at you with wonderment, bafflement, and confusion when you do! 😉

  10. @WillyPete I’ll take wonderment 😉

  11. JR, do the more stealthy classes like ninjas fall under the banner of ‘fighter classes’ or not?

  12. @Skoul- Nope, those count as Rogues, which is another contest for another time.

  13. Oh hey, I actually made a paladin for completely unrelated reasons. I’ll also enter some other warrior characters because why the hell not. I’ve got enough of these types of characters to enter to a dozen contests.
JR: If you think I’ve entered some of these before, feel free to disqualify them.

  15. Thomas Martin

Well; since this contest seems to be going for most of the fighter-based classes, here are my two entries.
A fallen paladin who won’t run any more.

and a barbarian defending his home

  16. @Ubiquitous Pixel… It sure is good to see you back around, Pixel! Been missing your freshness around here!

With that said… an oldie from me when I first started zyping stuff.

  17. Excellent, was just working on this!

This is Parsival, the righteous and headstrong Orc Paladin of Torm. I’m currently writing his story; he’s given his sword(an old Dwarven blade called Tervingi) by a Lade of a Lake and ends up having a bizarre romance with a Dryad, seeking worldly wisdom from a Tiefling Paladin and an equally bizarre Love Fairy/Shapeshifting Spider lesbian couple in his quest.

Parsival was trapped in a civilisation-less underground community where evil dwarves experimented on him and gave him a pair of swanky arms. Now he’s free to roam the surface, he must wear a helmet to disguise his Orcen heritage until he wins the hearts and minds of the populace of the Realms(and the heart of his Weeping Willow Dryad, Mona), promoting peace and order throughout the land.

He’s accompanied by Sil the Androgynous Wood Elf and his trusty probably intelligent steed, Capiletta, who help him balance his devotion to his God, duty to the Lady of the Lake and adaption to the social world and social situations that aren’t all survival of the fittest.

  18. Also all of these designs are great so far, but I do agree that some of them aren’t really Paladins. It’s cool to do something non-traditional but I still feel there needs to be something Paladiny about it.

Also designing with Heavy Armour in Heromachine can be difficult if you want it to look unique so that’s part of the challenge.

  19. Oh crap, I just re-read the description, lol. Never mind! Everything’s great so far.

  20. http://s1238.photobucket.com/user/dollywitch/media/neverwinter/Portraits/arak2_zps21352051.png.html?sort=6&o=3

Arak, champion of the Goliath people. Another PC from our D&D game I made a portrait for.

  21. Fellow Neis walked out of a tavern with a wizard, a dwarf, a bard, and a barbarian. He walked on alone.

  23. Here’s a fairy knight a la Jonathan Strange or Spiderwick. Dorcas Dor one of the bodyguard of the Lady of Summereve:

By the way, when it gets to the poll stage, are we meant to be voting for the one that displays the most skill, or the one we like best? Makes a difference for me because I have a weakness for plain line drawings!

  24. @Folkly- The later

  25. LoneWolf6155

Sorry about that. I had the wrong picture.

This is my DnD Warblade that I played for a While, Kell Ashall the Mercenary.

  26. Ok guys, this weeks contest is now closed. The Poll will be up shortly.
