Character Contest 57 – Aquarius

Your character design challenge for this week is to come up with an image with HeroMachine based on the idea of the Zodiac sign "Aquarius". To help you out, here's a bit on the history of the name from Wikipedia:

Aquarius is sometimes identified with Ganymede, a beautiful youth in Greek mythology with whom Zeus fell in love and, in the disguise of an eagle (represented by the constellation Aquila), carried off to Olympus to be "cup-bearer" to the gods. Aquarius has also been identified as the pourer of the waters that flooded the Earth in the ancient Greek version of the Great Flood myth. As such, the constellation Eridanus the river is sometimes identified as a river being poured by Aquarius.

I usually think of Aquarius as being closely related to water, so pretty much anything aquatic-related would work on this one like a mermaid, or a mutant with water-control powers. You could also do an undersea research station, or the Aquarius Torpedo, or some other tech- or magic-related item if you don't want to do a person. You could play off the "cup bearer" concept if water doesn't appeal to you, or even riff off the great hippie tune "Age of Aquarius" with a peace-and-love poster homage to that era.

The contest rules are the same as usual:

  1. Use only a HeroMachine applet (no PhotoShopping except for basic cropping) to create a PNG or JPG of your entry, named as [your name]-[character name].[file extension]. So DiCicatriz, for instance, would save his "Bayou Belle" character image as DiCicatriz-BayouBelle.png.
  2. Post the image to a publicly accessible website (ImageShack, PhotoBucket, the UGO Forums, etc.).
  3. Enter the name of your entry and a link directly to the image in a comment to this post. The image cannot have been used in any previous HeroMachine character design contest.
  4. The link to your image should go directly to the image (like this) and not to a hosting jump page (like this). If you see "preview" or "rotate" somewhere in the link you're probably doing it wrong.
  5. I'll choose a winner next Monday, who will receive his or her choice of any item or a portrait to be included in the final HeroMachine 3 program, or a "Sketch of the Week" style black and white illustration (you pick the subject and I draw it up however I like).

No limit on entries this week, so knock yourselves out. Good luck everyone!

  1. MLS says:

Aquarius: the water bearer. In ancient times it was the water bearer who carried urns of water onto the battlefield to give relief to thirsty warriors and succor to the wounded. So it only made sense that in the Zodiac Commandos (my low-budget GI Joe rip-off), Aquarius serve as the team’s medical officer. Water, saline, plasma, morphine, whatever; it’s all liquid.

Aquarius, The elemantal guardian of the seas, and arch-rival of Capricorn, the elemental guardian of fire.

  3. Jeff Hebert says:

Dangerfish, your link does not go directly to the image and it’s not named correctly. To the right of the image on the page you posted is a huge box labeled “Share this photo”. The link you want is in the “Direct link” box, and is http://i1126.photobucket.com/albums/l602/Dangerfish_93/hm3-beta6.jpg. The correct name for the image would be dangerfish-aquarius.jpg — hm3-beta6.jpg doesn’t help me know who made it or what it’s called.

This doesn’t disqualify the entry, but please, next time try to do it as I’ve outlined above. Waiting on the entire Photobucket page to load is tedious, and having to manually rename the file (remembering whose it is and what the character is named) tends to result in errors as I assemble all the entries for judging. Thanks!

  4. Dangerfish says:

kinda like this, but with the right name?
    i’m really, really, really sorry.
    like, REALLY

  5. Jeff Hebert says:

Yep, that’s the ticket! It’s not a huge deal, it just makes the actual day when I have to go through and download all the images a LOT easier for me.

  6. Gero says:

@Dangerfish: Got it right that time, and don’t worry about it, anway. Everyone messes the link up once in a while. Cool entry, btw.

  7. Dangerfish says:

    Thanks Gero
    it’s my first contest entry!

A secret project codenamed Aquarius gave a common clown fish the intelligence of a man. Now Agent Bubbels, as he is called, works along side Agent Miller his partner on missions to save the world.

Agent Bubbel’s exosuit has many gadgets including a laser and booster rockets.

  12. Pesky says:

Ganymedes true form is a fish, but he is able to project an illusion of beautifull young boy. The illusion is easily seen for what it is if seen through water, but not other liquids. Even Zeus was tricked by this playfull fish, though not willing to admit it, he later changed the fish to a true boy.

OK, I am back, hardcore. I made these last month during the Capricorn contest, and it’s eerie that I did one for most of the one’s you mentioned in the Aquarius contest write-up Jeff.
I hope to do a few more, at least ONE being an AIR powered character since Aquarius is the water-bearer but it is actually an air sigh.

I surprised I haven’t had to turn in my membership card and the free juicer. Thank the Goddess I love showtunes and I am a total Gleek.

So here is my version of the young handsome prince, that Zues fell in love with kidnapped to Olympus and had him be his cupbearer serving the Ambrosia which kept the God eternally young.

    Greetings all.

This time around, my research has shown my that (despite the name) Aquarius is actually more of an air sign (therefore I shall be saving the majority of my nautical material for Pisces). I also found that Aquarius is connected to the myth of Pegasus, and associated with eccentricity, intelligence, unpredictability and eagerness to make the world a better place

All together now: This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius
    The age of Aquarius
    Aquarius!
    Aquarius!

  26. Connor S. says:

Aqua Homo- This Latin name translates to “Man of the Water”, a title given to a creature who appears in the Mediterranean sea once every full moon. He has been known to linger in the area for a day or more, then he dissapears. There have been no official sightings of this legend, but there have been many photos of a blurred figure obscured in the waves. Many will say some of them are indeed the Man of the Water. This is an artist’s impression.

    http://img163.imageshack.us/f/hm3beta11.jpg/

It has been deemed a comical perception by many viewers, but some aged seamen say that this is a spot-on portrayal. Is this legend, or fact?

A DC game super hero I’ve played since 2004.
    Nautica
    Real Name: Marina RIvers
Marina was born to an Atlantian queen/sorceress and a human Enviromental activist. She was raised with her father, till the day she started choking, and Eddy, her father rushed her to the beach and submerged her, she though he was killing her, till she noticed she was breathing underwater, She lived with her father another year, but her skin had become blue, her hair green and her eyes turned solid black. On a mission intercepting a whaler, Eddy was tossed overboard, he saved a whaler who was as well, but Eddy was eaten by a shark as Marina who had stowed away watched in terror. Marina was beside herself, and threw herself into the ocean and started swimming, wether it was her fathers obsession with Atlantis or a homing sense, Marina found a small community of underwater tribes, and was found by it’s Queen, the Lady Tethys. Tethys knew Marina, and took her as her studant in Atlantian sorcery. Marina would later learn that Queen Tethys was her mother. However her mother had an enemy, a Lord of Chaos, Tiamat. Tiamat often tormented Queen Tethys and Marina, and eventually to save her mother grief from her subjects Marina left to become a hero and guardian to the ocean. She soon hooked up with Paul Lashley, a boy she had seen off and on since she was 8, and the boy who had light powers, and some other super friends Bobcat a feral fighter and Nightfall a goth chick with darkness and fear powers, asked Marina to join the, adding her Atlantian water sorcery to their group The Seaside Set, in Pacifica CA.

Hey Jeff, Aquarius is actually an air sign. “Waterbearer” more closely has to do with rain clouds. A pure water piece would be more akin to Pisces.

This site will give you a lot more insight into the Aquarius. http://www.findyourfate.com/astrology/Aquarius.htm

  31. Fyzza says:

This is my first entry for this contest, and I’ve made it around a sort of Water Guardian theme rather than a Water Carrier.

He is one of many of his species. He wears Roman-esque armour, equipped with his sword fashioned from water and steel, dubbed ‘Hydra’. He can intangate* his body and transform it to water whenever he wishes to. He is able to move wherever he wants through water when in one of the previous states. This creates the currents, and the many others of his species doing the same create the rest of the currents. He can utilise the water to his advantage, often firing it at anyone foolish enough to dump waste in the water when he’s present. Along with the rest of his species, he guards the water, doing his best to keep it clean and protect marine life.

  35. Jeff Hebert says:

Logan Gray, next time please post the direct link to your image rather than the DeviantArt jump page. Over to the right of the page you posted is a link labeled “Download Image”. Right-click on that and you get the direct link to the image, http://www.deviantart.com/download/197524547/ccc_by_bobosheep-d39lmwz.jpg. That’s the one you want. Also, you need to name your image as yourname-charactername.jpg and in the comment, give the name and preferably at least a little about what they are.

Not a MAJOR deal but it makes things a lot easier on me if you do it this way. Thanks!

  36. Jeff Hebert says:

Hey man, dude’s pouring water out of a jug. That’s water! I know, it’s *really* an air sign, but have you ever though of a pegasus or birds or winds when the name “Aquarius” comes up?

  37. Jeff Hebert says:

Since Jeff left the whole ‘aquatic’ criterion pretty open-ended, I’m going to just throw this one out there with no hope of winning, partly for fun and because I’m kinda proud of it, and partly because if you’re anything like me you’ve had enough of winter:

  65. Rapthama says:

This person was once worshipped as much as the gods, because he invented a brew which tastes like brew (or wine),
but it looks like an ctual spring water. (It dosen’t even make you drunk!)
None knew him by his name, but Waterbrew Master how they called him.

When a sailor or someone else lives over a storm on the sea and gets away without dying, the Sea Hag comes.
She offers them a perfect rum or wisdom. When a person picks the perfect rum, she allows them to drink it, but after that she pulls them underwater and eats them alive.
If the person chooses knowledge, the hag demands a body part from him (It can be eyes, fingers, toes, ears etc).

I wanted to something like the colour blue and many stars.
Then i think of a mermaid and a old man with long beard.
    So thats the final result.
Hm… and that the cloud looks like big waterdrops is intended(i hope thats the right description).
There is a great difference like mermaids and ghosts in water(i dont no about english right word for that). In german named Nixe(Mermaid) or Wassergeist(ghost). Mermaids have a bad charisma like salvation and dead(man-eating). Ghosts are more like are archetype mother or a guardian.
So i inspired the ghost for this picture with a touch of
    greek mythology.

I really think that the entries so far have been a little one sided. In my opinion aquarius is such a broad element to work with there’s no reason most of these entries should look the same. That being said I did go with the Greek inspiration with this one. I tried to incorperate the water along with the air elements that make up aquarius.

Thought i would give this contest a try… this is my version of Aquarius. She’s standing in front of the earth after it was flooded.

Thanks ams, I’m not really happy with it, my PC kept crapping out with all the layers and I had to start over WAY too many times. It is a poor rendition of my original idea…but thanks for the compliment!!

Entry #2, I made him back in May I believe, so sorry for not having the image with my name before it.

The Fireman was, as his name suggests, a fireman until one day, when he and his colleagues were fighting a fire in a house, apparantly caused by the supervillain Blue Phoenix. Without warning, they ran out of water to supply the hoses, and the fire was still blazing strong. He screamed in fustration, and a sudden jet of water shot out of his chest and into the fire, immediately putting it out. He carried on being a Fireman, but in the time between calls fought crime as The Fireman.

  88. DiCicatriz says:

I hadn’t entered a Zodiac contest before, but couldn’t resist jumping in for my own sign 🙂

This first one is a straightforward rendition of Ganymede, kept as Zeus’s standard bearer and keeper of the rains that accompany his storms. Ganymede possesses the Torrential Horn, a golden instrument fashioned by Hephaestus and blessed by Poseidon to never run dry.

    1) Ganymede

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/DSauce/DiCicatriz-Ganymede.png

These next entries are my own little take on the water-bearer myth. Since they all technically held the title of water bearer at one point I think they all qualify as a take on Aquarius 🙂

    2) Atequia

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/DSauce/DiCicatriz-Atequia.png

A deity born of the primordial ocean, created by the mingling of the sun’s warmth and the frigid depths of the sea. Atequia is master of the surf, a generous god who supplies the world with water, creating rivers and streams to carry his gift further inland. He is the Water-Bearer of the Land.

    2) Aehecatl

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/DSauce/DiCicatriz-Aehecatl.png

Atequia’s wife, mistress of the sky. Atequia breathes life into the world, working with her husband to create the clouds that blanket her realm, delivering the people of the earth from the intense heat of the sun. The first rain was her doing, deciding to share Atequia’s gift to all corners of the globe. She is the Water-Bearer of the Air

    3) Cemanahuac

    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v504/DSauce/DiCicatriz-Cemanahuac.png

A vengeful earth deity. Cemanahuac bore a grudge against Atequia and his wife for millenia. His rivers carved into his soil, encroaching on his territory. Her clouds blocking him from the warmth of Mother Sun. Eventually his animosity spurred him to action. He drew the waters into the immensity of his being, taking Atequia into himself and sealing him away. There followed a long period of drought in which entire civilizations perished from thirst. Cemanahuac was the third Water-Bearer, holding it within himself and denying it to all.

Aehecatl eventually sought him out in his great palace, Mixtlan. She plead the case for humanity, citing her own heartache being kept from her husband. Cemanahuac was moved and released the seal, reuniting the couple and relinquishing his time as Water-Bearer.

    My entry:

    Aquarius Space Project:
Nobody really understood or questioned why the government wanted to build a marine evolution research department in space when it would have worked just as well on Earth. Of course, it became immediately clear to the unfortunate researchers when the facility was hacked into and their research was unleashed upon them. The station was built in space to ensure the research wouldn’t get out, and nothing would get in, allowing the evil to fester. The researchers turned into aquatic monsters within months. Here is one of the unfortunate souls now. The murky water they walk about in is too poisonous for them to breathe, and they are running out of purified water. This whole conspiracy is just an experiment to see how the technology can be used on humans during war.
